Breaking Tuesday News - fanfrompowellspub - 10-29-2019 01:33 PM

The NCAA has ruled that players can profit off their image and likeness!! Here comes the video game back ASAP!!!! Maybe our stadium will have the grey turf and building in north end zone. EMU Will be winning the 2025 Big Ten championship on my PS4 in the near future.

Agree that it's the right thing to do. I am concerned that some of the big money programs will use it as a recruiting advantage. "Come to our school and we will use your likeness so that you can get paid." I can see some of those less than ethical programs selling T-shirts with the recruiting class so that they can essentially give those kids a signing bonus. I would like to think they will exclude freshmen from this rule.

Agree, the abuses could be monumental.

What if Louisville players get big bucks from Papa Johns? Put the players' likeness on coupons attached to pizza boxes.

The only way I favor this is if all of the monies are pooled and divided equitably.

Should Zion Williamson make a mint while a star at UBuffalo make chump change for his likeness.

If I were a high school FB player I want to go to Ohio State.

RE: Breaking Tuesday News - dansplaining - 10-29-2019 05:58 PM

whoa big schools are going to have a competitive advantage over smaller schools? thats TOTALLY not whats happening now

Okay, look at the MAC:

We have a tiny footprint.

Toledo and Buffalo have big footprints. Western too. Akron and Kent share N.E. Ohio area with plenty of competition from the Buckeyes.

We arguable have the smallest footprint and no geographical room to grow. It is like Ann Arbor is a big, huge blue wall.

Among the non-P5 schools take EMU and UCF. EMU is in a small city which is losing population. UCF is a school which is growing greatly and in a big metro area.

Steve I agree. Dan is very passionate on this issue and I can sympathize with his concerns, Zion made a huge amount of money for Duke while not being personally compensated for his efforts, beyond his academic scholarship. The NCAA also is hardly a respected organization, their rules enforcement and decision making seem haphazard.

That being said, I don't see anyway this new comp program will accomplish anything other than destroy NCAA football and basketball.
Instead of the $1,000 handshake, big donors can now hire a great athlete to endorse their business for the dollar figure of their choice. You are right, the big donors of OSU, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, etc... will make what now is a great divide, one that is insurmountable in nature to other programs. It will absolutely destroy any competitive balance and thus could obliterate any interest in the sport. The NCAA champion will be the best team anyone could buy.

A college education is extremely expensive today, with room and board I think the "low cost" option EMU provides is close to $70K. For MOST athletes that participate in college sports, a full scholarship is an
incredible value, they play four or five years and leave with a degree for their next life endeavor.

What needs to happen here is that the NFL and NBA need to step up to the plate. There is ZERO reason to require a Zion Williamson spend a year in college before acceptance into your league draft, in fact I would contend that practice to be monopolistic, for the sole purpose of your league having an additional year of evaluating his talents for free. The NBA has already began discussing about expanding their draft and I applaud their decision. John Calipari may not like it but expanding their G League offers a career path for those athletes not desiring a college education.

Will the quality of college athletics be diminished? Hell yes! Message to fans: it already has been. A basketball team that contained Mike Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins talent has not been seen in decades and will not ever be seen again. March Madness excitement, however, is stronger than ever! It is the COMPETITON that trumps the quality for college sports fans.

Lot of excellent points in your post, Jerry.

Sounds like you’re saying if someone is better for the job, then they’ll make more money. NBA players don’t subsidize their salaries with the G-League. If a college athlete is good enough to make a ton of money, he should be able to make it right away.

The quality of college sports won’t diminish until the NBA and NFL allow 17 and 18 year olds into their leagues. Since it’ll never happen with the NFL (those kids would die), and it’s already happened before with the NBA, I think college sports will be just fine.

I don’t think there is anyway they DON’T cap the amount a kid can make. No one will get rich. But it’s a positive step in the right direction to allow these college students to make some money while their universities profit wildly off of them.

Right? Especially in football. The G5 schools need to face reality and start their own division with their own National Title, but that’s for another thread. This decision should only motivate them more to do so.

RE: Breaking Tuesday News - dansplaining - 10-30-2019 06:42 AM

These power imbalances are going to exist no matter what for a myriad of reasons - at least this way players are able to have some rights. there is no valid reason athletes arent considered employees of the university. 'student athlete' is a way around paying insurance when they inevitably hurt themselves on the job and prevents them from unionizing.

RE: Breaking Tuesday News - dansplaining - 10-30-2019 08:12 AM

also the value of the scholarships alone make is an uneven field. a full ride to northwestern is more valuable from a financial stand point than a full ride to ohio state - yet ohio state is a better program.

I don't understand why people do not like other people making money.

what players should i pay to show up at my birthday party?

RE: Breaking Tuesday News - JonesGoddard - 10-30-2019 11:26 AM

Y'all! There will be rules. And, we live in a free market economy.

This stuff should have happened years ago/decades ago. Think football (soccer) in Europe. These teams sign 14 year olds, develop them, pay them, educate them. Some work out, some don't. We all move on.

Also, I wish we had tied relegation systems for MAC and Big Ten. That would also make this much more of a free market too.

RE: Breaking Tuesday News - emussuperfan - 10-30-2019 01:23 PM

This will affect recruitment because players will want those bigger named schools because of the notoriety that comes with it. Pooling money and spreading equally among all student athletes would be the best answer. With those getting the most getting a somewhat higher percentage.

That already happens.

That being said - players should unionize

This doesn't bother me.
