Q: What would a divisionless American look and what if... - Ned Low - 10-21-2019 09:14 AM

... we wound up having three or more teams with matching conference records?

Would we move to a 9-game conference schedule and if so, would Navy go along with it?

I'm fine going divisionless but would be concerned if a team with a matching conference record to two other teams go snubbed due to ranking or SOS. With OOC schedules being made so far out in advance, it seems as if it would be tough to predict how good some schedules would be 10 years out, for instance.

If we go to a nine game schedule, one positive would be that it would make OOC scheduling easier (or so I would think).

Thoughts?

AAC has no intentions of going to a 9 game schedule at the present time...and Navy would definitely be against that...and that is the last team AAC wants to tick off as they have an option (like they had for decades) of being Independent.

Eight conference games per year split among 10 teams. Rotate the two you don’t play in every year. One bonus is not waiting two years to play some teams. (Looking at Memphis right now!)

The 3 or 4 way tie would be interesting but typically the tie breakers of "head to head" and "overall conference records" sort that out.

Like the Big East in 2010. UConn had beat Pitt and WVU head to head so while all 3 were Co-Champions, UConn got the Big East BCS berth.

With the Conference Championship game you just have to figure out a 1 and 2 seed somehow with the tiebreakers. I like the "flip a coin" one.

Also gives the conference a chance to schedule some made-for-tv matchups during this two-year period. Something I'm sure our media partner would appreciate.

9 conference games only works (but works well) if you're a 10 team league.

9 AAC + 1 or 2 P5 + 1 or 2 FCS/buy games

At 11, you keep things at 8 since a broken round robin is just stupidity.

Co-champions suck (see AAC 2014 season), but it might be a reality for the AAC for a few years.

..but there wont be co-champions. The waiver allows for a CCG. The CCG will decide the champion. If you have 3 teams tied---there will be tie breakers that decide who plays in the CCG. There will be just one champion after the CCG is played. Thats the whole point of a CCG.

I can already see Tulsa turning things around, getting in a 3-way tie for the conference title, and then being the odd team out of the CCG.

Navy will never ever agree to a 9 game conference schedule.

As always there will be a long laundry list of tiebreakers and if that fails -- a coin toss. No problems.

THIS^^^^

Zero chance. We promised Navy an 8 game schedule when they joined.

Yep, the NFL has 12 tiers of tiebreakers. We can use most of them. And there's always the coin toss.

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.

7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss

It is simple for the AAC...Two highest ranked teams in the CFP poll compete for the championship. Put a disclaimer in there that any undefeated team is guaranteed a spot in the CCG just in case Navy runs the table but still has to play Army.

Let them go. Solves our problems. They care more about their non-cons anyway.

...no. They are good value to the conference, and institutionally speaking they might be the best overall school. I don't trust the AAC to find someone better if they leave.

Navy can stay.

No, don’t want some outside committee deciding our championship game.

Random question that I don't want to create a form about..

Is there any way I can find out what end zone our AAC team will be in for the cotton bowl?
I want to go ahead and buy tickets ahead of time.

Temple will have the “home” side.
