NIU vs. Huskie logo on helmets - JoeNovak - 10-12-2019 12:59 PM

Just wondering how everyone on here feels regarding the current helmets. I loved the classic early 2000s NIU huskie logo. Never understood why they strayed away from it. It still has “NIU” on it and is a sharp logo. So what’s everyone think huskie or just letters?

NIU helmets aren’t bad but they hardly feel like NIU. You can’t even see the NIU a lot of the time.

Huskie Head was a top-3 helmet in G5. Everyone instantly knows it’s NIU. Iconic helmet/logo of the Golden Age seasons (03, 12, 13).

We abandoned the best helmets in college football.

How does STF not see this?

Even the huskie head without the letters under it would suffice. Anything beats those ****** block letters

Yes, the 2001 logo wasn't bad. I'd rank it:

1. Huskie head with NIU letter below
2. Interlocking NI (LeShon era)
3. Dark Dogs (yes, I know they are cursed)
4. Fighting Huskie red helmets

What they wear now is among the worst they've ever worn, IMO. Why they ever changed from the 02-13 is a head scratcher.

Yea I liked the Huskie head with NIU below.

Frankly, I always felt the Huskie head above the NIU looked very cartoonish. My all-time favorite would be the interlocking NI from the LeShon era.[/i]

Put the gd dog with NIU back on the helmet. I really hope they didnt pay some dumb marketing for this idea.

No, he won’t. That’s peanuts for him. It needs to be in the Yordon/Chessick range.

On another thread there is a lot of praise and thanks to the university and in particular the Barsema’s because of another generous donation to help erect a NIU sculpture in the MLK commons to continue to promote the NIU brand.

So I would suggest that Frazier and the rest of athletics were just ahead of the game in promoting the NIU brand on the helmets, fields, and everywhere else throughout athletics.

So you're suggesting if Michigan puts up "UM" sculptures on campus and inevitably gets praise, they should scrap their helmets for ones that say "UM"?

Michigan doesn’t have an enrollment problem, football attendance problem or generally any marketing issues. They are the primary university in the state along with Michigan State.

Partly because we have the directional school syndrome along with enrollment challenges, athletics attendance issues, etc. etc. the university including athletics, including our board of regents which Barsema so generously represents we are marketing the school as NIU.

You may recall that Buffalo’s athletic program began marketing athletics as New York not Buffalo, without the rest of the university being on board. They were forced to back track on that costing them money to reverse the marketing campaign they started.

If athletics is truly the front porch of the university than their marketing campaign should be in sync with the school as a whole.

What the heck does this all have to do with retaining the dog head over the NIU? The NIU identity is still there, big and bold. This is extremely popular among the fans, as anyone can see. Sounds to me like someone is trying to justify marketing dollars poorly spent.

Whether you agree or not is your choice. I was just trying to explain that there is a thought process behind it.

I don’t understand not having the dog head.....it still clearly has NIU just below it. The dog logo is far more iconic than “NIU.” Our rise to a football power came while wearing that helmet. That’s what people recognize.

Yep.
