Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - goldenflash99 - 10-01-2019 05:41 PM

JUCO Power Forward Gabe O'Neal committed today. Big body, solid shooter (60%) and offensive rebounder.

He of course joins Von Cameron Davis who was been discussed in the 2019 recruiting thread.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - anti-zip - 10-01-2019 06:43 PM

And James Jordan 6'5" JUCO guard who committed a few weeks ago.

Here's O'Neal's highlights from last year in JUCO. Looks like he's got decent athleticism for his size. Arms seem pretty long. Looks like another lefty as well. I believe all three recruits for next year are lefties.

So this makes 3 recruits plus we're one over the limit this year so the assumption would be someone is paying their way and will likely be given a scholarship next year. Of course there are always transfers but as of now we have 1 scholarship left got next year.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - Muskrat - 10-12-2019 12:52 AM

Which, if any, of the players listed on the current roster are required to sit out this season?

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - anti-zip - 10-12-2019 11:44 AM

Since Beck was granted immediate eligibility I believe just Nuga.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - Muskrat - 10-12-2019 12:15 PM

Thanks, anti-zip!

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - GoFlashes8 - 10-24-2019 09:50 AM

2 JC and 1 HS senior so far. Not sure if they have 1 or 2 spots open.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - GoFlashes8 - 11-11-2019 02:54 PM

Looking forward to Wednesday, November 13th, as it is NCAA signing day for Men's basketball.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - KSUforever - 11-13-2019 11:52 AM

Do you think they are getting ready to have a spot if Pippen were to leave as a grad transfer?

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - Muskrat - 11-13-2019 01:56 PM

KSUforever, I'm sure they are covering the possibility of Pippen being eligible to transfer under the grad school rule, should he graduate on time. In this day and age every coach is keenly aware of how that transfer rule may affect their roster. That is why I'm sure coaches are very careful of who they consider redshirting, other than for major injuries. If Pippen continues to stay healthy and plays up to his potential and graduates, he could surely find a P5 spot, IF he wanted to.

These 3 signed NLI's today as expected:
Von Cameron Davis - Walnut Ridge HS (Columbus OH), left handed 6'5" SG/SF

James Jordan - Triton Junior College (originally from Detroit MI), 6'6" SG

Gabe O'Neal - Mineral Area Community College (originally from Princeton OH), 6'7" PF (Sendy said in the press release that they expect him to replace Phil Whittington next season

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - Muskrat - 11-13-2019 08:49 PM

They still have one more opening, right? If I'm not mistaken there are five seniors on the roster and they just signed three, plus Nalls is a preferred walk-on.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - anti-zip - 11-13-2019 09:08 PM

There are three total walk-ons. Nalls, King, and I'm not sure who the other is. So I assume at least the third guy has a promise for a scholarship next year. If they plan to put Nalls or King on scholarship then we're even for next year. Of course there's always detections.

I believe the third walk-on is Beck, who so far (statistically) looks like a walk-on ...

Some updates on the recruits, Jordan is shooting high percentages but scoring in single figures. It seems he's missed time too as he's only played in 8 of is teams 18 games but he did play in their last one so he hasn't left school or anything. His team is just outside the top 25.

O'Neal is also shooting good percentages while scoring just over 10 and getting just over 6 rebs. Doesn't appear to be blocking shots. His team is undefeated and is currently the #5 ranked team so I wouldn't be too worried that he's not putting up huge numbers.

As for Davis... He set a new school record with 52 points on Friday because he's really good at basketball.

VonCameron Davis was on the Division I 1st Team All-Ohio as a junior. He was the only junior on the 1st Team last year.

I believe I read somewhere on Triton site Jordan is seeing limited action due to a back injury???

Good to know. I figured it had to be some sort of injury. Take it easy and rest up for next year lol.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - anti-zip - 03-08-2020 12:46 PM

Davis's team Walnut Ridge advanced to the Regional Semifinals yesterday with a win over the #1 seed I'm their bracket. Walnut Ridge was the #6 seed. I don't follow HS tournaments but from looking at the bracket this is essentially the D1 sweet 16. If they win the next one, and Thomas Worthington wins they'll face off in the Columbus Regional Final which would be a fun matchup for Kent fans. Thomas Worthington is led by a Jr PG Jalen Sullinger (son of JJ, nephew of Julian) who has an offer from Kent.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020 - Muskrat - 03-08-2020 06:08 PM

Yeah, I saw that. anti-zip. I was surprised because I had thought that Walnut Ridge was one of the many Columbus high schools that had closed over the years like Columbus North, where former Kent State coach Frank Truitt first made his name. Columbus and the other seven biggest cities in Ohio used to have phenomenal basketball. Now, most of the best high school teams are private or suburban schools and many if not most of the big city schools with storied programs no longer exist. I went to school south of Canton and they once had four high schools, now only one.
