Word on the street is Nikola and Marko both deemed ineligible

RE: Ineligible players - Karl B - 09-25-2019 08:38 PM

Hope the word is wrong. That would be two big blows

Basis for being ineligible?

I believe Coupet is good to go.

Heard they have been waiting on word for awhile. I guess they got it.

What does amateurism mean exactly? That they are not amateur athletes?

RE: Ineligible players - MICHAELSPAPPY - 09-26-2019 02:50 PM

Good thing we brought in Monyyong. And that Pippins is still around.

Just a guess, but might be they played professionally overseas.

Based on information I heard tonight at the SpectacUALR the NCAA has not yet ruled on their cases. Folks in the athletic department certainly don't know what will happen, but they are now cautiously optimistic that they may be cleared to play. They hope to know in a week to 10 days.

There has not been any decision to date.

Exactly the same situation as Ben Coupet
Quote:Tervell Beck has received a waiver from the NCAA and will play this season at Kent State, source told @Stadium . Transferred from UNLV.

That makes me optimistic about Coupet's chances. I watched a some of the first practice. Can't tell much from that, but I did like how Coupet looked on the court.

Well, history has shown that it is not all that unusual for our roster to be in question this late into the summer. Situation normal.

RE: Ineligible players - MICHAELSPAPPY - 09-30-2019 08:26 AM

If both of them get cleared, we are going to have a strong roster, inside and outside. I think it is safe to say that Pippins will be one of the most experienced and talented walk-ons we have had.

With foreign players it can get messy because other countries have different definitions of amateur.

The NCAA will permit an athlete to play AGAINST professionals but not WITH professionals. Little Rock Rangers adhere to rules that keep their players amateurs but from time to time face teams that are professional as defined by the NCAA. It is fine to play those teams the college players just can't be on those teams.

In Europe it isn't unusual for a lower tier team to be mixed. The club owner might hire a few pros but round out the roster with amateurs and under local rules they are considered amateur.

Another stumbling block is prize money. Not unheard of amateur tournaments overseas posting some prize money or prize gifts (ie. merchandise) for the top teams.

With those sometimes the NCAA will only dock a year or two of eligibility depending on circumstances sometimes completely ineligible.

Name and likeness can get you in trouble as well. If a shoe company or such says hey endorse our product and we will give you a $500 store credit in exchange for your endorsement, you've probably lost any shot at NCAA competition unless you pay it back.

Then you get problems from the differences in education systems. AState's punter lost a year of eligibility because the NCAA counted one year of his education in Australia as college equivalent so his eligibility clock began running when he entered that school.

RE: Ineligible players - MICHAELSPAPPY - 10-08-2019 08:22 AM

Do we know anything yet about this?

RE: Ineligible players - MICHAELSPAPPY - 10-14-2019 12:55 PM

Any news on the other two?

RE: Ineligible players - MICHAELSPAPPY - 10-17-2019 08:44 AM

The season is getting close. When are we going to know?

They are still on the roster.

RE: Ineligible players - mphsfan - 10-17-2019 05:40 PM

arkstfan's post above is an excellent description of the mess that eligibility can be for foreign players.

I wish I could add more to it, but I can't. We'll know at some point, but the wait continues. Meanwhile I hope they are staying in shape on their own. They aren't supposed to work out with the team.
