Chip Kelly - stever20 - 09-16-2019 08:31 AM

saw on twitter someone asking....

has there ever been a coach in college football or basketball who was thought of going in as a sure bet like Chip Kelly- who fell on their faces as badly as Kelly has....

They couldn't think of any....

Anyone here think of someone?

Tubby Smith fell flat on his booty at Memphis, but not sure how well he was thought of to start with.

But Smith at least won 40 games in 2 years. Chip Kelly has gone what now 3-11 in his 2 years so far?

RE: Chip Kelly - Hokie4Skins - 09-16-2019 09:45 AM

That's a tough one. Probably not. Kelly was considered the top unsigned coaching commodity before the UCLA hire.

RE: Chip Kelly - ManleyPointer - 09-16-2019 09:51 AM

Bill Walsh. Legendary NFL coach, inherited a decent team from Denny Green & had a respectable first year. But just flamed out after that. It was weird.

yep. unquestionably.

What some folks are comparing it to would be if Billy Donovan or Brad Stevens came back from the pros and totally flopped...

I think part of it for football at least is there are so few guys who were in the position Chip Kelly was in.

respectable? Finished only 10-3 and #9 in the country.....

Even in his other 2 years went 7-14-1. Do you really think Kelly is going to be able to get 4 wins this year to match that?

That if anything puts into context just how badly Kelly has struggled.

None.

Chip Kelly going 46-7 with 75% Top-4 finishes at a non-blueblood to...3-12 at his second college stop is unprecedented in college sports.

RE: Chip Kelly - Gamecock - 09-16-2019 10:02 AM

The only ones that come to mind are college to pro.

RE: Chip Kelly - GoldenWarrior11 - 09-16-2019 10:27 AM

Rich Rodriguez at Michigan.

but even there-
year 1- 3-9
year 2- 5-7
year 3- 7-6

And don't think that he was thought of as a sure fire thing compared to what Kelly was.

RE: Chip Kelly - Wedge - 09-16-2019 10:38 AM

Chuck Fairbanks.

He was head coach at Oklahoma and had a 52-15-1 record there. Finished #2 in the AP poll each of his last two seasons.

Left OU for the NFL, became head coach of the Patriots. He did all right there, much better than Chip Kelly's NFL records. The Pats were 11-4 in Fairbanks' 6th season there... when the owner suspended Fairbanks for agreeing to become head coach at Colorado. After a few months, the Pats owner finally let CU boosters buy out Fairbanks' contract.

Fairbanks' records in three seasons at Colorado: 3-8, 1-10, and 3-8.

Along those lines, Dan Hawkins at Colorado. He was the must-have guy coming out of Boise State in the early 2000s. His record at Colorado:

2-10
6-7
5-7
3-9
3-6 (canned before the end of the season)

But even that shows where Kelly is at right now. 8-15 first 2 years vs 3-10 right now. Kelly would have to go 5-4 the rest of the year to get to 8 wins.

No. It is even worse than you think. Kelly is 5-26 in his last 31 games as a head coach. He is literally destroying the football program. They just lost a recruit today, a linebacker from Georgia. He decommitted from the 2020 class. He was a three star player with about 34 offers (according to Rivals), but only one from a power conference school. Now he is gone.

I don't think Kelly likes recruiting. He is going after the low hanging fruit. If a kid has an offer from San Jose State, New Mexico State and UNLV, and he gets an offer from UCLA, guess which school he is going to end up at? He is recruiting speed, but I am not sure he is recruiting football players. At least the track team is going to be really good.

The offense is ranked #121 out of 130 FBS schools. The defense is ranked #117. The field goal kicker is 0 for 3 on kicks. Not much is going right. The next home game is against Oregon State and I think they will be lucky to draw 30,000 for that game. The capacity is 92,000. I think people will give up, boycott, and stop donating. The hope is that Chip Kelly will just quietly leave.

RE: Chip Kelly - IWokeUpLikeThis - 09-16-2019 11:17 AM

Maybe as soon as Chip brings his players in, UCLA will go 46-7 like Oregon?

Yep. RichRod wasn't even their top candidate and felt like a square peg in a round hole almost immediately.

There is a book about RR at Michigan called Three and Out. It is a really good read.

I think everyone is too fast on Kelly, it takes 3 years at least to get your players in that fit the system. Out of the ones mentioned Dan Hawkins has to be the winner. He failed miserably at CU, and is now back at UCD where he started.

Willie Taggert at FSU is following a similar path to Kelly.

most of the great coaches, by year 2, they are showing massive improvements....

And would say that Taggert was viewed no where near as much of a home run hire compared to Kelly.
