Top 10 G5

RE: USA Today Top 10 G5 - EigenEagle - 08-16-2019 01:01 PM

UAB and UNT in but no GS and Troy? Do they even follow the G5?

Honestly I get Georgia Southern has high expectations and I appreciate that just as much as anyone but I think you need to remember Georgia Southern barely won a game against a 7 win MAC team to end the year last year. Given that, the recent offseason distractions, and the loss of your top two running back in an offense centered around running the ball, I think it's hard to make a case for GS being top 10 G5 preseason. With that said, one big word stands out, PRESEASON. We all know they have the potential to be top 10 G5 this year. That schedule gives you the chance to prove it if you win double digit games.

This is a not-overly-convincing counter-argument to a point that I didn't actually make.

By stating you dont understand how UNT & UAB are in ahead of Troy & GS without stating other teams that should be in over UNT & Troy, I feel like your point was solely that Geogia Southern belonged in the top 10. In terms of my opinion, it's just that, an opinion. Would love to hear your reasoning for thinking they belong in preseason top 10 if that's what you think or if not, who belongs instead of UAB and UNT?

I'm not saying we are or aren't a top 10. I'm not the one making the rankings. All I'm saying is that if you can't find anyone better than UAB and UNT on that list (which is really a top 15 list) then GS should be on there.

That's especially true for UAB. They're at the very bottom of FBS in pretty much every ranking of returning starters and production. Their only back-to-back winning seasons since they started in 1991 is 2000-2001, and they've never had back-to-back 8+ win seasons. The tings you mentioned going against us are tiny things if they're even points against us anyways (BTW, our #1 back was playing slot much of last year out of necessity and averaged 7.5 yards a carry last year).

UNT has their QB back and is much more likely to be strong, but also lost their OC to Southern Cal and hasn't been the most consistent team, either.

And it's not just where GS is, I'm surprised at the lack of respect our conference is getting in preseason rankings. CUSA's champion was boat-raced by the #7 Sun Belt team and our champ beat their runner-up who was about equally good without breaking a sweat. I mean, some even have us lower than the MAC, which is silly considering how we've beaten them like a drum.
