Ran across this list (only updated to 2015) looking for all time wins. Watson Brown (Mack's brother) not only has the distinction of leading in losses with 211, but he managed to stay employed despite a .392 winning %. Only 8 coaches on this list are lower and all but one are below #50 and have 125 losses or less.
Many notables are of course on the list. Amos Alonzo Stagg is #3.

Buddy Teevens is the active leader in head coaching losses. He's up to 169 losses now.
On the other hand, he was 9-1 coaching Dartmouth last year.

It was obviously TiC but Ash could refresh at a FB powerhouse and a MAC school could hire him 1-2 years later

There are two categories here:
Those who coached for a long time, had a strong winning percentage, but the number of years coaching allowed them to rack up a large number of losses. e.g. Eddie Robinson 167 losses, but a 70.4% winning percentage. These are good to great coaches that can attribute the losses to longevity.
Then we have the ones who were losers in both number of losses and below .500 winning percentage. e.g. A C Burcky 110 losses and a 29.3% winning percentage. These are lesser coaches who fulfilled the Peter Principal.

Yes but we have a reputation of being a coaching graveyard. Graber, Shea, Anderson never were HC anywhere (though Anderson might have had some hopes about PSU if Paterno ever retired). Schiano's next HC job will only be at one place.
Ash should be a DC somewhere -- and maybe become a pro Head Coach where recruiting/drafting isn't contingent on having a personality, endearing yourself to the area around you and maintaining relationships with the local HS coaches. But if his tenure ends this year (and if there's anything less than 3 wins it should), his tenure is an abject failure for accelerating the slide that (or finishing the job) that Flood started.
