Fasttracking St. Thomas straight from D3 to D1? - Across the Pond - 08-09-2019 01:11 PM

Found this on a messageboard (sorry forgot on which one, was a summit league team):

Maybe the NCAA will change legislation for reclassifying process

G: (7) Review of Reclassification Process. (Fairness/Well-Being/Operational)
The Strategic Vision and Planning Committee will continue to discuss
whether an institution should have an opportunity to reclassify from
Division III to Division I, without first requiring that institution be a
Division II member, noting the importance of ensuring preparedness for
Division I membership.

Good news for the Summit if NCAA allows it. Every school in that league would prefer the Tommies over Augustana.

Honestly I don't see why they shouldn't be able to do just that and go from D3 to D1 just like a D2 school would

St. Thomas, unlike Augustana would be successful in D1. 10K students, metro area, strong alumni base, large endowment. What is their not to like.

The fact that Augustana, with fewer then 2K enrollment, tiny endowment and a small alumni base are even considering D1 only goes to show that not all University Presidents have a clue.

Well...won’t that open up quite a few options for some conferences if there are any other large D3 schools!

This would be similar to the Liberty case IMO.

Does the Summit League actually want St Thomas? Wouldn’t they rather have some of the Minnesota state schools?

Which D3 schools have large enrollments?

Beggars can't be choosers.

Seems like an exception could be made considering they were kicked out for being good.
Two thousand seat arena one thousand seat rink and five thousand seat stadium.
Football could stay non scholarship Pioneer league.
I would think a facility drive to double the rink maybe add a thousand seats for basketball and their good.
It would not be required but adding revenue would be helpful .

They want a school in Minnesota one might lead to two.

Would like to see this happen. Unlike Augie, The Tommies would be a terrific addition to the Summit League. They'd bring a large new MSP market with great air travel destinations, strong academics, strong enrollment/ and a good endowment. This is an ambitious private university with a lot going for it.

I also think they'd be able to develop a strong D-I hockey program in short order with the right rink, too which could really help the WCHA.

NYU (26,000 undergraduates) and UC Santa Cruz (17,000) must be among the largest. No reason for either to be in Division I athletics.

Both St. THOMAS and Augustana would be great adds to the Summit League. Sioux Falls is a growing city and St.thomas is a great athletic program

Add the Tommies, Violets, & Banana Slugs to D1 ASAP!

UT Dallas had 19k undergraduates. They could probably pull it off and perhaps an invite to the WAC.

Of course, but they'd have to drop football to move up and they have a really nice thing going in the NSIC. Hockey drives the bus at those schools, but football still has strong support and they don't want to kill that to join a low-end D1 conference.

Like I said in another thread. There are danger signs that a lot of small private schools are closing which many D2 schools are moving up to D1 for a safe landing spot. Northeast, midwest and northern plains will have the issues.

Not that they have any ambition to do it, but I don't really see any major differences between Santa Cruz and the other UCs in the Big West

Well, if Augustana makes the jump to DI, then there's a nice spot for St. Thomas in the NSIC. Since there's no DII hockey championship, I guess St. Thomas would have to go DI in that sport though.
