yup, and when they talked about it on the news they said they were focused on hoops specifically, first.

Makes sense. Basketball has the largest draws. Baseball, softball & soccer don't draw the numbers that would make it it very profitable. Although, alcohol availability might cause an uptick in attendance at some events.

Alcohol sales make it much more likley a minor league tesm would be interested in partnering with UNCW

Why would UNCW baseball want to partner with a minor league team is the question? It made zero sense to me when they did it before and even less now. Campbell did it for one year but the parent team made a ton of upgrades to the facility and here they did squat.

Don't know where you got your info, but the Seattle franchise did quite a bit of upgrading to the field area. And that was always a temporary deal. The longtime partnership with a major league team would bring many more perks for both sides.

New stadium. Would that be a good enough reason?

Something has been in the works for sometime now. If it ever comes together, it would entail either major renovations to the existing stadium, or an all new stadium. All I partnership with a major league program. The main idea of a new stadium was due to the ability to sell alcohol for both entities. That's has been what has hurt bringing in a minor league team in the past. The Sharks are a perfect example of the difference alcohol sales makes in attendance. The Sharks would have been long gone if they hadn't gotten approval to sell alcohol when they did. Our biggest issue with staying in the existing stadium is parking.

Without the port city roosters in the mid 90s and the wilmington waves id hate to see brooks field today

RE: UNCW to get wet? - jumpinmullet - 07-27-2019 09:57 AM

Brooks field right now is a glorified high school stadium and I am aware of the less than halfass improvements that the Roosters made to the place. UNCW needs to own baseball and get it done without a minor league team coming in again and doing the bare minimum which is exactly what they did. The metal bleachers need to go to the dump and build something real, the main seating behind Homeplate has to be covered and the field is in need of a complete makeover. The new stadium will be a huge attraction for recruits and the school in general. I would put UNCW's base ball stadium at the bottom of the barrel for D1 programs in the state and area.
UNCW has along history of doing things on the cheap and I think that needs to stop and the way to do this should not include a minor league team in anyway.

How do you propose raising the $20 million (or more) to build and/or repair the current facilities?

Nearly all new minor league ballparks are built downtown. UNCW is too "far out" to attract the recent college graduates and young families that come to minor league games.

Kannapolis built a ball park at exit 63 on I-85 in 1993. The park needed to be in Rowan County because unincorporated Cabarrus County was dry at the time. The Kannapolis Phillies and Intimidators have played there. The city is building a new ball park in downtown Kannapolis. High Point, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro have built new stadiums in their downtowns in the last 15 years.

Somewhere there's data about how many beers are sold at college games. UNCG has sold beer at their games as long they've played at the Greensboro Coliseum. UNCW can work with their experience and estimate what they'll net. $60,000 for all sports? That's 2+ scholarships.

Davidson has a terrible baseball park. It's a few bleachers with a tiny concession stand with bathrooms in the back. They added a beer garden in 2018 that's open for weekend games. It's swamped.

$20 million is a huge number and I have to think it can be done for a lot less and done well. I would much rather see them renovate the stadium than think about a teardown. The main structure appears solid and I could not imagine why it could not be improved on . The field also could use a makeover, not to mention a real scoreboard.

We definitely need some major upgrades. But to call it a glorified high school field is too funny. Other major programs have complemented how nice the field itself is. And the only thing that has kept us from hosting a regional is the lighting. Our lighting doesn't meet the grade. We finally will have more restrooms next season, which is way past due. I would prefer to renovate and stay right where we are. But we are losing more parking all the time. I've heard the other spot considered is around the area where the track is.

You literally wrote this just a couple comments ago and now flip flopped and are saying they should do it cheaper than the estimated $20 mil.

Quit moving the goal post and stick to an argument.

It would be located to the left of the track if you are facing from the softball field. Large chunk of land there.

Just saw where NC State is getting their own Premium Lager called "Old Tuffy" brewed
by New Belgium. Would be really cool if UNCW could do something similar.
