GT baseball staff changes .... Stansbury at work? - georgia_tech_swagger - 07-05-2019 06:47 PM

GT baseball will not retain their pitching coach. This effectively means everybody on staff other than Danny Hall was hired in the last year. That's effectively an entirely new staff. This smells like another quiet Stansbury cleanup operation a la the WBB program. The figurehead is still there but everything underneath him is new. Sounds like a sneaky way to change staffs with minimal recruiting impact while emphasizing to Danny Hall we do things differently around here now that Bobinski isn't in town. It has all the hallmarks of Stansbury clean up operations:

Football -> Paul Johnson -> Retired -> Geoff Collins (O'Leary 3.0) ... instant impact
WBB -> Michelle Joseph -> Ethics -> Nell Fortner (an upgrade in reputation alone, lots of connections in media and SE recruiting)
Softball -> Shelly Hoerner -> Contract not renewed -> Aileen Morales (former All-American at GT) ... instant impact, double digit win improvement year one
Baseball -> New hitting coaches hired last year ... get a #3 seed behind an explosive offense ... new pitching coach this year.

It's hard to ignore the patterns.
- Nobody is fired .... at least not with those words. And there's no "buyouts" either, though there are "mutual decisions", whatever that is. Probably "here's some money, less than your buyout, for us to not taint your reputation with "fired" on the resume.
- Not shy about making changes in programs that use to be elite with current coaches but stalled (Football, WBB, Baseball)
- While only the long run can determine the success of the hires, each seems to do a standard deviation better immediately first year

Geoff Collins - instant impact -

Hold your horses.

Collins has yet to coach his first game ... Truth told, we don't yet know what Collins' impact will be.

Hugely better in recruiting.
Hugely better in branding.
Hugely better in culture.

What more can you do without playing a game?

It's not Collins first rodeo at GT. He was responsible for the talent that won the ACC in '09. Nearly every major staffer has an immediate George O'Leary connection. Nearly every major staffer has been at GT before as a coach or as a player or as both. They already know the ins and outs and what they're dealing with regarding The Hill. And joy of joys The Hill is in no position to fight with their ethics scandals and a new incoming President that's an alumni and couldn't possibly view athletics as less important than the former, which literally let a booster hire the AD for writing a check for a new basketball arena. That got us Bobinski, by the way. It wouldn't surprise me if they finished with a better record year 1 than PJ had last year, as everybody seems to forget PJ had to pull an inside straight just to make a bowl game after his season opening fiasco.

Sounds like Stansbury couldn't find a coach he wanted so he talked Hall into staying at least one more year. When the pitching coach found out he wasn't in line for HC he agreed to move on.

Hall has more time left on his contract. His youngest of two sons will be a junior starter on the team next spring. I don't know if he will be drafted a year from now after his junior season and forego his senior season. If not, I expect Hall to stay HC for the next 2 years until his son finishes up. This past season, as much as it was the same old same old choke job in postseason that GT fans have become accustomed to over the last decade, kept Hall in good graces with Stansbury. He (Hall) was under no pressure after this season, that is.

Also, from a revenue perspective, the baseball program at GT is not in the red ink due to significant benefactors (read: former Jacket baseball student-athletes) such as Mark Teixeira, Charlie Blackmon, and a long list of guys who donate lots of money to the program - and, who all played for and love Danny Hall.

Would be awesome to see James Ramsey get the HC position, but I know it won’t happen. I hope the next guy keeps him on staff.

He has at least 1 more season - perhaps 2 - to apprentice under Hall. If he shows he can recruit and build strong relationships with the high-level feeder programs (e.g., East Cobb travel team) in the Atlanta area, he will at minimum be a candidate to promote from within. He's originally from the Atlanta area so it isn't like he's foreign or new to the scene.

COACHING SCOOP: @GTBaseball will hire Danny Borrell as its pitching coach, sources tell @D1Baseball. Borrell is currently the @Yankees Minor League Pitching Coordinator and is very well versed in #ACC baseball. #Jackets aimed really high in this search and got a good one.

Quote:Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall has hired a new pitching coach with remarkable credentials – Danny Borrell will come to Tech after having served as the pitching coordinator for the New York Yankees’ farm system since 2015. The hire was announced Friday.

Borrell succeeds Jason Howell, who left in a mutual parting after the season following seven seasons with Hall and the Yellow Jackets. As pitching coordinator for the Yankees, Borrell oversaw about 180 pitches and 11 pitching coaches across nine minor-league affiliates. He has helped send 34 pitchers to the major leagues, including all-stars Dellin Betances and Luis Severino.

“You could not have hired anyone better to be the pitching coach,” Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said in a statement.

Borrell starred at Wake Forest as a two-way player 1998-2000 before getting drafted in the second round by the Yankees. He played nine seasons in the minor leagues before the Yankees hired him as a pitching coach and then as coordinator.

Deja Vu. I could have sworn I read this announcement from GTS several weeks ago.

Anyway, sound like a very good hire. Congratulations.
