MAC Basketball coaches hot seat? - WMU2013 - 04-25-2019 12:33 PM

Interested to hear from all schools, who in your opinion is the top 3 coaches on the hot seat? My three would be.

1. John Groce (Akron)
2. Steve Hawkins (WMU)
3.James Whitford (Ball State)

RE: MAC Basketball coaches hot seat? - FrankAnderson - 04-25-2019 12:59 PM

1. Rob Murphy
2. James Whitford
3. Steve Hawkins

Without looking it up I bet all 3 of those have done better than Montgomery, who should be on the hot seat but probably isn't.

Rob Murphy is #1 by far. The general consensus is that the only reason he has not been fired is because emu does not want the negative publicity of buying out a contract a year after cutting some sports.

RE: MAC Basketball coaches hot seat? - kreed5120 - 04-25-2019 03:38 PM

Groce is 2 years into a 6 year deal. Each of the next 4 years he's set to make $650k. He's probably one of the safest coaches in the MAC heading into next season as no way Akron is going to eat the last 3 years $1.95 million left on his deal.

Edit: I'm not sure which coaches are on expiring deals or which ones only have 2 years left on their deal. The coaches most likely to be canned would be found in that group.

Rob Murphy is going into the final year of his contract at emu. He can earn an extra year by winning 20 games. Currently it's doubtful he will win five.

A lot depends how a coach does in Cleveland.

If he overachieves his butt is safe.

I'm sure people are a little disappointed but I can't recall a coach inheriting a cupboard more bare than Groce was left. There are probably five or six coaches feeling more heat than Groce.

i can recall many coaches coming into worse situations than groce. he was taking over a perennial 20 win top of the mac program. the roster was somewhat depleted after some guys transferred out to be with dambrot and others transferred when groce came in. still, he had an emerging star stretch forward in utomi (who is now at USC). one of the better junior wings in the mac in jimond ivey. a smooth college ready well rounded freshman wing in shawn parrish (now at nevada). another talented frosh athlete in torrey patton (now a juco all american-college undecided). he had proven rim protector in olajapoke (undecided grad transfer). a solid freshman big for depth in sayles. most all of the frosh were recruited by the previous staff and he still had a bunch of open scholarships to fill any holes in the roster. he chose to sign transfers, most of whom needed to sit a year before becoming eligible. most now gone; hester, gueye, cotton... and a couple still at akron in loren jackson and deng riak. so, groce had enough to be competitive, mostly failed to fill holes in the roster, build with good freshman, or keep his talented players in the program. the only thing groce has done well is make it nearly impossible to scout the zips because the roster keeps turning over so much.

Its a different world for sure with the new transfer rules.

It can go either way for a MAC program, quick defections to the basement or quick build up to a 30 win season and single digit seed in the NCAA tournament.

The choice is yours.

? UB built their program on freshmen and a couple jucos. they are the only mac team w a 30 win season and single digit seed. transfers had nothing to do with it.

JuCos are transfers too.

RE: MAC Basketball coaches hot seat? - MaddDawgz02 - 04-28-2019 10:27 AM

There is no question or doubt at all, the 2 coaches most deserving of.q hot seat are Murphy and Montgomery

RE: MAC Basketball coaches hot seat? - kreed5120 - 04-29-2019 06:33 AM

IMO EMU could do a lot worse than Murphy. I don't see that job being attractive to many.

It should be coach K from Toledo... Sadly he took over a team who won 4 games the year before he started and he just won 25 again. Still no titles...

Toledo gas the best facilities, top 3 most talent and top 3 fan support in the league with no trips to the dance. I suppose last year is a pass with how dominant UB was.... We still shouldn't have lost to NIU in the quarters though.

I can see why you're frustrated and I agree with you about facilities, talent and support... but dream on. He just won 25 games and he's under contract until 2023. I think your expectations are a bit unrealistic if 25 wins and an NIT appearance on the heels of 23 wins and a MAC finals appearance is underperforming.

2011–12 Northern Illinois 5–26 3–13 6th (West)
2012–13 Northern Illinois 5–25 3–13 6th (West)
2013–14 Northern Illinois 15–17 8–10 4th (West)
2014–15 Northern Illinois 14–16 8–10 T–4th (West)
2015–16 Northern Illinois 21–13 9–9 T–3rd (West) Vegas 16 Quarterfinals
2016–17 Northern Illinois 15–17 7–11 T–4th (West)
2017–18 Northern Illinois 13–19 6–12 6th (West)
2018–19 Northern Illinois 17–17 8–10 4th (West

Our coach's records so far. I'll give him the first couple years since the cupboard was bare. After that, a .426 winning percentage in the MAC, with no years above .500. The one year with 21 wins we played a really bad OOC schedule including 4 lower division schools.

When you have a weak OOC schedule like K has done through the years, 23 or 25 wins should easily be attainable...
He has not won either of his NIT games either...
Pretty much the same type of resume he had while at Wisconsin(Green Bay). Plenty of 20 win seasons, but no dance...
He is a good guy, who will not embarrass the university, but for some reason falters in big game/championship scenarios... I think if he does not come through in that respect, in the next couple of years, he will be gone...

We have some fans who think Candle should move on because of last year's 7-6 season...even though he won the MACC the year before.

Some UT fans are never happy. They used to complain about how UT had gome so long without a football MACC. Now we win one, and they want to coach gone the next year. 01-wingedeagle
