Miami fires hockey coach Rico Blasi - Love and Honor - 03-20-2019 07:19 AM

The guy had a lot of success at Miami and was a loyal alum, but we live in a what have you done for me lately world. We haven't been the same since leaving the NCHC, hopefully we get back on track to where we were a decade ago.

And now seems about the right time for BG to sign Bergeron to a contract more in line with the other revenue sport head coaches. Hockey draws better than basketball, has the alumni resources, and is again becoming one of the top 15 programs in the country. It’s time to pay the man who brought us back from near extinction. There’s no reason Bergeron shouldn’t be making $300-400k per year.

Would Miami pursue Bergeron?

Bergeron is one of the top guys on our list of candidates. So Yes, it might be wise to give him a big pay raise. Blasi was making more than double what Bergeron earns.

This feels so surreal. Mid-late 2000s it seemed everyone in Chicago hockey was committing to Miami and Blasi was viewed as a demigod.

That's what makes this so sad. At one point it seemed like there should be a statue of Rico on campus with championship banners hanging in the arena. While football and basketball fell apart, hockey was a major sport that gave us pride and fulfilled the dream of seeing a Miami program achieve national prominence.

Then the last few years happened in the NCHC. A change was expected and probably needed. A decade ago I figured we’d only ever need to find a new coach if Rico wanted to jump to the NHL, no one would've never believed this would happen. It's sad for everyone involved.

Yeah it wasn’t long ago you could drive around Chicago suburban rinks and restaurants and frequently find Miami hockey apparel. “The Brotherhood” had a visible niche following around here, particularly with Italians. Knew many people who played hockey and getting an offer from Miami circa 2005-2013 was viewed as a rite of passage.

This news really puts a dent into my teenage years as I knew it. :/

And BG makes the tournament! Playing Minn.Duluth in Allentown, PA to break a long postseason absence.

Good Luck, I hope you win, but

Playing Duluth is like going to the Dentist!

This will be a rematch of the legendary four-overtime national championship game in Lake Placid.

Congratulations BG, we are all rooting for you. However, playing Duluth has been a very painful experience for Miami. They are tough and they control the game.

We know Bowling Green can beat top teams. The Falcons swept Minnesota State during the regular season. But the Falcons have been inconsistent, too -- blowing some games against soft opponents and blowing a two-goal lead to Minnesota State in the last two minutes of the WCHA final last weekend. (I'm certain Miami fans can empathize with that.)

Thank you for 2009, Rico. Best sporting event I've ever been to.

John Buccigross picks BG for Frozen Four.

Rumors strongly suggest Miami is about to hire Bergeron.

This isn't the first Bowling Green hockey coach who decided to go back to his alma mater. He did a good job for us.

Forward.
