You be the selection committee - ken d - 03-18-2019 10:57 AM

When you get right down to it, the NCAAT selection committee really only has to make a hard choice regarding about 15 ot so teams. The rest are either obvious shoo-ins or are automatic qualifiers. Every year, we can count on some fans to complain why this team or that got screwed by the committee, based on their own personal subjective criteria.

Based on comments by the chair, it appears that once they are down to the #10 and #11 seeds, ratings like NET, RPI, KenPom and others aren't a deciding factor for the committee. They seem to be looking for evidence that a team could beat a #6 or #7 seed in the first round (since that's who they will be playing).

The following is a blind "taste test". For each unnamed team, I have listed the number of their wins and losses, with results against teams seeded 1-8 in parentheses. I also show each team's record in its last 10 games to see who's hot and who's not. Without first looking up team W-L records (which might prejudice your thinking) your task is to relegate six of these teams to the NIT.

Team...Wins.....Losses...Last ten

A........22 (4)....10.(1)....7-3
B........26 (0).....5 (1).....9-1
C........19 (2)....13 (8)....5-5
D........19 (3)...15 (10)...6-4
E........25 (1).....7 (3).....8-2
F.........22 (2)....11 (7)... 4-6
G........25 (0).....7 (1).....7-3
H........21 (2)....13 (7)....5-5
I.........22 (2)....11 (9)....6-4
J.........19 (1)....14 (10)..3-7
K........21 (4).....12 (3)...4-6
L........20 (4).....13 (3)...6-4
M........23 (1)......9 (4)...7-3
N........20 (2)....13 (7)...3-7

When all the results are in, I will tally which teams got voted off the island most frequently and identify all the teams.

It's been at least 10 years since the committee stopped using a team's record in its last 10 games as a selection factor. It's no more important than the color of each team's away jersey or which team's local burger place has the best french fries.

I would relegate: C, D, H, J, K, N

Yeah, this exercise would need all the criteria the committee is supposed to use.

exactly. And whichever letter has a 353 next to it's NC SOS is relegated..... Especially given the location of the OP is...... Raleigh... Or NC State.

Relegate: C, D, H, I, J, N

Fine. Then just ignore that. I'm trying not to make this complicated.

The committee did what it was supposed to.

35 schools from the 6 major conferences ("power 6" on the CBS graphic) got in. The 10, 11, and 12 (Oregon) seeds are all pretty mediocre.

Of the 40 who didn't get in, 15 were selected for the NIT, 21 had losing records so were not eligible, and 2 (UCLA and Arizona) barely were above .500 and were on self-imposed post season bans to focus on clearing up their coaching staffs in the wake of the shoe scandal, another had exactly a .500 record, but unlike Texas wasn't picked. Which basically left Oregon State as the one snubbed school.

If you go by NET only NC State and Clemson were the top two pushed down to the NIT. But it was clear the committee picked a number of teams from the same conference with a better conference record even with a worse NET than others in their conference (e.g., Syracuse, Minnesota, St. John's).

If you look under the covers however at NC State's record, you see 9 weak lower mid-major non-conference opponents who didn't make the tourney, whom they of course smashed (Maine, Maryland-Eastern Shore, UNC Asheville, Mt. St. Mary's, St. Peter's, Mercer, Western Carolina, USC Upstate, Loyola MD). NET probably liked their win at Penn State, but they lost a lot of games and NET liked them for losing close.

So what you see is a 10-0 vs. non-ACC schools who didn't make the Tournament or even the NIT. Padding, pure and simple. They have one quality OOC win at home over Auburn. They also beat Syracuse at home. But they lost to 8 tourney teams and 2 NIT, plus a bad loss to Wake.

An ugly record. Getting a 2 seed in the NIT is more a nod to NET than record.

you need to give us all the information, including NC SOS.

The location of the OP is irrelevant, given that the OP doesn't root for any of these teams (or any other, for that matter). If you don't want to participate, you could just ignore the post.

You've not given us remotely close to enough information. Your record and your record vs top 8 seeds isn't close to what all is looked at.... road record, records vs Q1/2/3/4, SOS, NC SOS- all that kind of stuff you need to provide.....

RE: You be the selection committee - Frog in the Kitchen Sink - 03-18-2019 12:21 PM

I don't think it is unreasonable in a thread called "you be the selection committee" to think the selection committee criteria would be listed.

RE: You be the selection committee - ken d - 03-18-2019 12:30 PM

All right. I give up. Since it's not practical to list every possible criterion the committee may have considered, I ask a mod to please just delete this thread.

RE: You be the selection committee - The Cutter of Bish - 03-18-2019 02:28 PM

If J was Ohio State, then the folks at TCU and NCSU should be pissed.

RE: You be the selection committee - DavidSt - 03-18-2019 03:20 PM

South Dakota State should be the second team from the Summit in. They do have the better record. I would regulate any teams that have less than 20 wins to the NIT, and allow schools with 20 plus wins into the dance. Any team with less than 20 wins from the P5 conferences usually do not make it far, and get knocked off by better mid-major teams.
