Lusk spent seven seasons as head coach at Missouri State and Lowery spent eight seasons as head coach at Southern Illinois. Lusk is currently an assistant at Creighton and Lowery is an assistant at Kansas State.

Would they want the job and be passionate about the challenge of being the 1st coach to win a conference title, a post-season tournament (CIT, CBI, NIT?), getting an NCAA bid and winning a game?

Or would they take the job imagining that it might be a useful stepping stone to getting them to where they really want to be?

Both. The new UMKC AD (Brandon Martin) has already set the goal. To be a top 100 team. Using UVU as an example, they have been top 100 the past two seasons, with a combined record of 47-20. That would achieve Martin's goals. If UMKC is challenging for a WAC title, competing and winning 20+ games a season, then the new coach is a success.

UMKC is a D1 job and there are only 353 of them. That is the level that most coaches in college basketball want to get to. Any success will attract attention from other schools. Get the team into the NCAA tournament, that could lead to a head coaching job at a power conference or a very good mid-major. It makes Martin look good, it makes the head coach look good, and it might even lead to a new on-campus arena. It could open up an invitation to a conference like the MVC. Anything is possible.

In all seriousness UMKC should kick the tires on Ken Bone
1982–1983 Shorecrest HS (asst.)
1983–1984 Cal State Stanislaus (asst.)
1984–1985 Cal State Stanislaus
1985–1986 Olympic CC
1986–1990 Seattle Pacific (asst.)
1990–2002 Seattle Pacific
2002–2005 Washington (asst.)
2005–2009 Portland State
2009–2014 Washington State
2014–2016 Montana (assoc.)
2018–present Pepperdine (assoc.)

Overall 414–253 (.621) (college)
12–14 (.462) (junior college)
Tournaments 0–2 (NCAA D-I)
3–1 (NIT)
4–2 (CBI)
8–7 (NCAA D-II)

Jeff Goodman posted this on his twitter:

UMKC with a potential mass exodus. All will explore transferring after coaching change, source told @Stadium

Xavier Bishop (15.4 ppg)
Robert Whitfield (11 ppg)
Jordan Giles (8.4 ppg)
William Mangum
Marco Smith
Kenneth Strawbridge
Brandon Suggs
--------------------------

It doesn't mean they are all gone. But they are at least exploring better options. Hope the AD can find a coach that they are willing to give a chance.

Ken Bone took a school that never made the NCAA before or after him and made it back-to-back years. I remain shocked no one will hire him.

Great, so they are gonna struggle even more. Heck, the refs won't need to do anything now to get them to lose.

The WAC doesn't need ANOTHER Chicago State. If those 2 can't get it together, I think they should both find new homes because this league is getting better, and quickly at that.

Just saw this:

@CoachingChanges
Not hearing much of anything at App State or UMKC or SIU Edwardsville
DM us with verifiable info please

UMKC AD said we would hear soon.
D2 championship game is March 30.
Think we'll hear March 31st?

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - Lopes87 - 03-20-2019 08:09 PM

UMKC might come in last next year...

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - NMSUPistolPete - 03-20-2019 09:24 PM

It depends on who they hire as coach. If they hire early, their new coach with have a lot of scholarships to build.

Nine guys in the transfer portal. NINE!!!!!!

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - IWokeUpLikeThis - 03-20-2019 10:38 PM

Wonder how so many players could be so loyal to a coach who was that bad.

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - NMSUPistolPete - 03-21-2019 12:48 AM

If UMKC hires a decent coach, many of these transfers would have been sent packing anyway. Unless the programs has been successful under the prior coach, a new coach tends to clean house of all the dead weight. UMKC had a few good players but not some many that a good coach couldn't replace them with a few good D1 grad transfers to jump start the program.

Chris Jans was able to replace NMSU's losses (10 players: Ian Baker, Braxton Huggins, Jermaine Haley, Matt Taylor, Jalyn Pennie, Travon Landry, Chancellor Elis, Marlon Jones, Bollo Gnahore, and Tanveer Bhullar) starting out his first season with a few RS transfers, a few JUCOs, some freshmen, and grad transfer Zach Lofton.

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - MidWestMidMajor - 03-22-2019 09:19 AM

I came across a quote from the midmajormadness website. The article talks about Barry Hinson's last year at SIU. The new AD is football coach Jerry Kill. SIU as an institution is in a serious decline:
Southern Illinois faces a monumental coaching decision. The institution seeks stability at the top ... and a reversal in enrollment numbers sooner rather than later. There’s no denying the impact the men’s basketball team can have on those trends. “It’s the brunt force of the university,” Kill said. “We have to win in that sport, there’s no doubt about it.”

While academic purists disdain the idea, a successful basketball team can do much to lift a university (enrollment, donations, brand image, etc.).
Here's to hoping that UMKC Chancellor "gets that" and allows the AD to get a transformative coach and then supports that coach. When the Chancellor was announced a year ago this is what was said: "what made Dr. Agrawal stand out was his combination of strong academic credentials with proven entrepreneurial skills. He understands the mission of UMKC, but he also knows that mission can only be fulfilled through innovative approaches and risk; he is not a status quo leader".” BTW: he got his doctorate at Duke. Hopefully there he developed an appreciation for basketball.

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - SoCalBobcat78 - 03-26-2019 04:30 PM

UMKC has hired Billy Donlon as the new head coach of men's basketball. Donlon was recently an assistant coach at Northwestern. He was head coach at Wright State from 2010-2016 and had a record of 109-94 in his six seasons as head coach at Wright State. Donlon is 42 years old.

Have seen some who seem high on the hire. Will have a lot of work to do in rebuilding that roster, if reports of all the UMKC players entering the transfer portal is true.

RE: Kareem Richardson fired - MidWestMidMajor - 03-26-2019 09:18 PM

It's 9pm and no official confirmation by UMKC- just tweets from hoop insiders. But if this is true, this could be the transformative hire I spoke about in post #73 above. Billy Donlon has had good success in the Horizon League as HC. He's not just an up and coming assistant or a D2 move up. He's "been there, done that" as a midmajor coach. I think Donlon will be highly motivated to prove to the world that Wright State's AD was an idiot to let him go. I think the Roos AD hire and now the HC hire shows that UMKC is not just staying D1...they're moving their chips to the center of the table. Looks to me like they are making a commitment to get good in men's basketball.

Scott Nagy is 66-36 in three years at Wright State so far. The Raiders are doing just fine.
