How many years was Cunningham at Troy?

RE: Phil Cunningham out at Troy - EigenEagle - 03-11-2019 01:34 PM

The guy basically bought himself 2 years by winning the conference tournament. And that's why the coaches don't want to get rid of the tournament or downsize it.

Today's a good day.

Anyone else on the hot seat? Only real possibility would be Jim Fox right? I'm sure everyone else is safe.

RE: Phil Cunningham out at Troy - Atlanta Trojan - 03-11-2019 08:41 PM

From what I was told Cunningham was probably going to be let go 2 years ago but he went on to have a winning record and won the SBC Tourney making our 2nd ever NCAA appearance, which granted him a contract extension. Last year was suppose to be one of the best teams (on paper) ever and ended up going 16-17 9-9

Cunningham still had 1 year left on his contract I believe

To be fair we were on fire at the end of the season 2 years ago. We were a 6 seed but finished the season 22-15

That was a very talented, and somewhat young team that gelled at the end of the season... that starting lineup was made up of Varnado, Wesley Person, Alex Hicks, and then a 4-star transfer from Florida... so they were very good

The fact that most of that team returned after going to the NCAA's, and wound up hobbling to a 16-17 record last year is probably what hurt Cunningham the most in all of this. There were a lot of expectations from media outlets and from Troy folks. There was no excuse whatsoever... probably goes down as one of the most disappointing seasons in Troy history.

You guys have had four 20+ win seasons, six winning seasons, made the NCAA's, NIT twice, and CIT three times...

That's actually an upgrade from Phil Cunningham. So I'd probably take Bob Marlin at this point.

Fox is probably it and we really don't know what'll happen. He signed a two-year extension last summer through 2020-21, but the buyout terms are favorable to the school. The idea was that last season showed promise and we only lost one senior.

Losing 20 games with eight seniors in year five is a bad look.

We will pass a collection plate among disgruntled Cajun fans to help you out if you are a little short of cash.

About those 20 win seasons.... for his career at Louisiana (and in 7 of his 9 years here), Marlin's teams have a losing record vs top 200 RPI teams. And zero wins against P5 schools with top 100 RPI. Oh, and only 1 NCAA and 1 NIT. Pay to play tournaments dont count.

Funny thing is... I wish I could say Cunningham had accomplished everything you just said, and he didn't even do that.

RE: Phil Cunningham out at Troy - Atlanta Trojan - 03-13-2019 06:20 AM

He did have one 20+ win season and NCAA bid. But the other 5 seasons were losing records... don’t think we built the 45+ million dollar facility to have one winning season every 6 years
