The tourney - NUGUY - 03-02-2019 11:33 PM

Happy with the way the league finished up. The team I didn't want to face was Towson. I know they didn't look good today but they are a team that started slow because of all the freshmen and newcomers and they are big. Not a good match up for us especially if Murphy is subpar or out. Let Hofstra deal with them.

Elon will be a pain in the arse if we have to face them next Sunday.

Both of our games with them went to OT and I’m sure they’re chomping at the bit to play us again if they beat UNCW.

We will have to take whoever we play seriously. I wonder what the outcomes of play in teams second round games is over the years?

RE: The tourney - NUGUY - 03-03-2019 12:03 PM

Looking at the Elon/NU box scores from this year our three point shooting has been way below our average at 17/57 for just under 30% with them. That compares to 38.6 for the entire season for us. Why is that? Lack of focus or is Elon that good defensively....because for the year their opponents scored threes at a 37% rate.

I'm not going to look at every tournament, but in the four tournaments with the current teams, all the First Round winners lost their Quarterfinal. In the 2002 through 2005 tournaments with 10 teams, First Round winners went 2-6 in the Quarterfinals. The worst seed to win a Quarterfinal was 11 seed Towson in 2009. The worst seed to win a Quarterfinal in a tournament with 10 teams was 10 seed Hofstra in their first CAA Tournament in 2002. In the 17 tournaments since northern teams joined, the worst seed to win a Semifinal was 6 seed George Mason in 2007. They were led by Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell after they graduated three starters from their Final Four team. In 23 of the last 26 tournaments, the 1 seed reached the Final.

I'm guessing it's one of those natural variance type things. Being far below average can often be chalked up to a bit of randomness, which usually you can throw away when predicting future games.

I'm just hoping we get some good news on the Occeus and Murphy injuries soon.

RE: The tourney - NUGUY - 03-06-2019 10:46 AM

In yesterday's Coaches Teleconference when asked about Shawn's and Murphy's injuries said that they were both practicing. Not sure how much they could be expected to contribute but in a potential three games in three days every minute would help.

RE: The tourney - Flying Dutchmen - 03-06-2019 01:45 PM

Is Occeus still dealing with the ankle injury from earlier in the year? To be fair, you guys have probably played your best ball since he went out for the second time.

No.

He injured his knee coming down from a dunk attempt at JMU.

Occeus landed awkwardly on it. It looked bad and he hasn’t played since.

We do seem to be playing our best ball now. I think there are reasons for that. First of all, lack of focus isn't a problem anymore. With this short bench they know they can't look past anyone and they know that they all have to work their tails off if they are going to win. At times in the past we have been guilty of playing down to the level of the competition. Also, Green and Murphy have stepped up...no one or two rebound nights lately and scoring is up for both up.

It's easier to win with a short bench when you're playing two days a week. Harder in potential back to back to back. When Shawn came back from his first injury he was able to give us twenty minutes right away. That would be a big help.

RE: The tourney - geewizNU - 03-06-2019 03:47 PM

I honestly don’t know if we can beat CofC in N. Charleston without Occeus playing some defense on him.

He’s the only player in our league who can slow down Riller a bit.

We win that game at CofC if Occeus plays.

Coen saying "We are trying to work them back into practice" worries me a bit. If there was a good chance they will play, he probably would have said "We are working them back into practice". Hoepfully I'm looking too much into it, but nothing about his answer really gives me hope they'll be ready. At the same time it's a legitimate answer for when you just aren't sure.

RE: The tourney - TribePride91 - 03-06-2019 04:06 PM

I would be surprised if you guys don't win the whole thing. I am not saying that to try and jinx anything either. You guys have the deepest team. I agree Occeus and Murphy are big helps, but you guys have already proven you can win without either one. Had Pusica taken a bit more time on his long 3 attempt at Hofstra, you probably win the league outright.

I also think last season's championship game might end up being a positive factor against COC if you guys meet them. The shock would be if anyone other than you guys, Hofstra or COC wins. There is much respect for Coach Coen and the constantly strong teams you guys have every year. About the only thing I have against Northeastern is 2015. Would love to get a second chance against you guys in the finals. But, the Tribe has a very tall order to get there.

My interpretation was that they are doing some but not all drills. I guess we'll know soon enough. Also, coaches play their hands pretty close to the vest when it comes to inluries.

RE: The tourney - SomebodyToLove - 03-10-2019 04:34 PM

W&M lost to Delaware today. Shows how much momentum means coming into this thing. Let's play our game and take care of business. Cannot take UNCW lightly because they have the ability to beat us.

RE: The tourney - SomebodyToLove - 03-10-2019 05:20 PM

Occeus and Murphy back in the lineup as subs. What a time to get these guys back. 8 minutes in and both have already seen time on the court. We are up 20-7 early. Keep it up Huskies.

RE: The tourney - SomebodyToLove - 03-10-2019 05:44 PM

Not a bad 1st half. Cacock is awesome.

I like Roland and Brace getting to the basket. If we can get Green and Murphy more involved we should be good. Not over yet by a long shot. 39-28 at half.

RE: The tourney - NUGUY - 03-10-2019 05:55 PM

It's so nice to have our bench back!
