Attendance MBB - UofToledoFans - 02-14-2019 11:31 AM

Does any site keep track of averages?

Also what has been the largest MAC crowd of the season? I'd assume based on history it was an Ohio game, but UB has to be drawing well.

Toledo says they will sell out vs. UB but based on some nice crowds vs. BGSU and Kent State in the past... announced crowds of 6800 have had more than 500 empty seats in our arena (7300 listed capacity).

You can find attendance averages on the official MAC website under the statistics section. It's under the Misc category. The Akron @ Ohio would IMO be the largest crowd of this season. It was the 50th anniversary celebration on the Convo Center and I'm not sure what the official attendance number was, but I'd guess it was 8k+ by what I saw watching the game and knowing how much the Convo holds.

Empty seats despite a sell out may mean that ticket sales to the public were all bought, but seats reserved for students may not have been used.

1 Ohio - 5,418.0
2 Buffalo - 4,863.0

4 Ball State - 3,398.0
5 Akron - 2,564.0
6 Kent State - 2,279.0
7 Central Michigan - 2,135.0
8 Bowling Green - 2,081.0
9 Western Michigan - 1,854.0

Here are the MAC games only numbers. Probably tells a better story when you throw out the November and December games which are played usually vs. relatively unknown teams and with students out for Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. To me, the season doesn’t really start until January, plus the schedules are more or less equal then. If attendance is important to compare, these may give a more balanced picture.

1 Ohio 6,279.0
2 Buffalo 5,739.0
3 Toledo 4,710.0
4 Ball State 4,080.0
5 Bowling Green 2,810.0
6 Akron 2,799.0
7 Kent State 2,767.0
8 Central Michigan 2,537.0
9 Western Michigan 2,118.0
10 Miami 1,774.0
11 Eastern Michigan 1,682.0
12 Northern Illinois 956.0

Ohio brings it strong to the hoop!

Buffalo has had a handful of games in direct competition with home Sabres game. They still sell out or come very close. UB hoops have become a hot ticket in town. The Top-25 ranking has greatly affected that in my opinion. People like to be part of a big event and the top 25 has made them credible among the unaffiliated locals.

I suspect some of that later boost is also due to fans waiting to see if “their” team is going to be any good. UB obviously has not had attendance like this in years, if ever. Attendance skyrocketed when they got ranked and conference began.

Yep, this exactly. Akron was selling out the JAR on a nightly basis when they were ranked as well. What's key is keeping people coming when you're not having one of those years. Lots of Akron STH gave up their tickets once Dambrot left. It's to be seen if Buffalo fans will do the same once Oats leaves, whenever that may be.

i don't know if the crowd for the Akron at Ohio game was the biggest of the year or not, but officially it was 7,887.

PS-I just looked at all of our home games, and yes it was the biggest crowd so far.

Ohio has a seriously good fan base. That’s near Gonzaga/VCU attendance.

Shoutout to the Lady Rockets for outdrawing nearly all of the men’s programs. NIU, not even over 1k, what a joke. Don’t want to hear them rag on EMU’s attendance ever again.

RE: Attendance MBB - UofToledoFans - 02-15-2019 12:30 AM

IMO NIUs attendance is super honest
I know they drew 2k or so when they played Toledo. It looked like what Toledo calls 3500 tbh. Then again our suites and upper deck are out of view for TV cameras..but lower bowl? Maybe Toledo over reports because 4,000 looks like less than half and our capacity is 7300.

It's because NIU has a really small season ticket base. The more season ticket holders you have, the more that for whatever reason won't be able to attend certain games. I don't think schools are artificially inflating these numbers.

No doubt. The point being the number of people in seats at NIU games is still closer to the rest of the conference. Other schools just report more because of pre bought season Tix.

On a positive note. 7:00pm ESPNU.
Toledo sold out 7300 for tonight. Selling standing room only still for 10$.

That's awesome. Looking forward to watching on the U. I'm sure the Bulls will also be hyped up playing in front of a crowd that large.

Even a Falcon can appreciate the Lady Rockets' fan base. My wife is a 3-time Toledo grad. and her father got his bachelors and law degree from Toledo, so I've been softened. That and I'm an attorney in Toledo, where 90% of my colleagues got their J.D.s from Toledo, so it's hard to bash the school that so many of the people I work with and respect attended (I still do, of course, but I've moderated myself.) The in-laws have season tickets and I've come close to attending a few of the games this year, myself. It's a fun atmosphere. I'm looking forward to Fralich's rebuild, bringing the BG program back to what it should be so the women's games in the rivalry mean something more than just bragging rights. During the Curt Miller years, and especially when BG had the Achter, Mann, etc. teams, the BG women would outdraw the men by a fair margin (it helped that those teams could have probably beat the men's teams of the era). Even with BG being pretty awful this year they still draw reasonably well. Northwest Ohio loves it some women's hoops, and always has.

i think it's probably because our women's program has been so down historically that most people don't care about it. it's only been within the past few years that we have been good. maybe they haven't caught on yet!

It's both pretty impressive and a testament to the quality of women's basketball in the MAC that 7 teams average more than 1,000 a game. 15 years ago, it was basically Toledo averaging 3-4,000, BG averaging 2,500-3,000, and maybe Kent State at over 1,000 per game. The conference has come a long way. I do wonder how the MAC stacks up against other mid-majors. Have to believe we are near the top in attendance figures.

How did a thread titled "Attendance MBB" get taken over by WBB attendance discussion?

Miami women, currently last in attendance but first in the league!
