"The biggest individual team culprit of the UConn athletic department’s 2018 deficit was the school’s football program, which lost $8.7 million. Additionally, men’s basketball lost about $5 million, women’s basketball lost about $3.1 million and the rest of the school’s sports lost about $22.3 million among them."

Pump the brakes. 110 out of 130 FBS football programs “lose” money. But college football is not by itself a business entity like the NFL, it exists to promote the school, more akin to marketing. Most colleges “lose” money teaching classes, its other revenue streams such as research and donations that keep them rolling. Additionally all schools in the American and 99% of FBS are non-profit organizations where making too much money can cause issues.

"Losing money" and losing $41M a year aren't necessarily in the same category, lol. That is not sustainable by anybody long term, even if sports is good marketing.
And I would argue that UConn football is absolutely not good marketing, lol.

True...but UCONN may not have a revenue problem but an EXPENSE problem.
They are spending like a P5 program...but no one told them they are in the AAC Conf.

That is peanuts when you look ever a 10 year period. That is only $411 million in losses. Definitely not losing a billion in 10 years.

That reporting is a bit sloppy/misleading.
If you allocate royalties, licensing, advertising, and sponsorships of $14.1 Mil to the teams that actually generate those revenues (Football, MBB, WBB), those three sports only report a combined deficit of $1.7 Mil.
22 sports is too many. Scholarships, facility maintenance/upgrades, coaching salaries, and travel expenses with no return on investment are what's hurting UCONN the most.

The number I found fairly interesting is UConn travel costs. They ran 7.3 million a year. That’s a pretty big number. This is an expensive conference to be in if that’s the norm for the AAC.

I don't know the number for UConn, but for UH annual giving was $154,755,970 for 2017-18 and is growing rapidly. It was $54,900,000 in 2007-08.
Part of the UH's $25M deficit is advertising.
Part of it creates alumni loyalty (giving).
Seems like a good investment.

SMU sponsors 6 less sports than UCONN. They also play many of their games off campus in Hartford, busing teams and fans 30 minutes away multiple times a season also has it's costs.

I think that's talking about total university giving, not athletics.

UConn will make up that $41 million deficit in no time with the new TV revenue increase from $2 million per team to $43 million per team.
