Kent State vs. Western Michigan - fallsdog - 01-08-2019 03:48 PM

The Golden Flashes will again attempt to #packthemac when they welcome the 6-8 Broncos of Western Michigan tonight at 7:00PM. Coach Steve Haskins and company are coming of an 8 point loss to the Akron Zips and have just 2 wins away from Kalamazoo.

This game is about Kent State. Opening conference play with 2 home games against middle of the road MAC competition ain't a bad way to start a season. Not winning either of those games is.

I do not care if a win tonight is the "best win that (anybody really) has been a part of at Kent State" or the doggone ugliest win of all time. Just win the game!

I think they will.

Kent State 71.5
Western Michigan 55

Man, the interest in this team is off the charts!

Tonight might have been the first sub-1,000 crowd I have ever seen for a league game at the MAC Center.

I was expecting it. The semester is starting late, Tuesday night, the BG loss was ugly.

Good bounce back game. Interesting changes to the rotation. Peterson and Williamson not starting or coming in during the first round of substitutions. Williams also out of the starting lineup. Harris maybe getting a chance to get back into the rotation, Frederick didn't touch the court tonight, and Walker and Duling started.

Peterson had a real nice bounce back game, and I thought Duling was a difference maker on defense tonight which was great to see. He's got the physical gifts to cause havoc on defense but often he's a little too out of control and picks up dumb fouls. Tonight he did a pretty good job to playing under control. Several blocks or alters near the rim and several knock aways. While his offense develops he could definitely find a nice role as the guy that does the dirty work.

That was more like it. An 0-2 start at home would have been the end of the season. I noticed Sendy was about as emotional as he gets. Quite a few obvious f bombs last night. He knew he pretty much had to win last night.

As far as the crowd is concerned I’ve pretty much resigned myself to it especially in early and mid January. No students mean no crowd or energy. Also ESPN and college basketball in general has done a fine job focusing everything on the NCAA tournament and away from regular season Conference games. It is more and more like a 27 game pre-season followed by a month long season (a week if you don’t win your Conference tournament).

I was surprised the ref shutdown Heather last night. The band does a whole lot worse and never gets told to shut up. I could see him telling her to get into the stands as I suppose if the cheerleaders all started acting like her they would be told to stop. He clearly told her to be quiet though. He wasn’t a new ref either. He’s been here before and knows her act. Maybe he was hung over.

Well, at least there's more reason to be optimistic. There is no way to sugarcoat the BG game, but at least after last night BG appears to be better than first thought. Either Toledo was really overrated, or Buffalo is this year's 2002 Kent State team. Probably some of both.

Just got done watching the replay. According to tv it was about where she was standing, not anything she was saying. And it was the ref who had never been to the MAC Center before. They mentioned something about that official citing some obscure rule late in a game which cost a team a game. Awesome to see Coach Hawkins go over to her afterward and give her a high five because she was pretty embarrassed.

Congrats to the team. A great effort last night. Total turnaround from BG game.

I was sure I saw that ref before. Maybe on TV though and not live. I figured it was her position on the floor and not what she was saying.

Even though two MAC games have been played so far, it looks as if the 9 or 10 man rotation is still in flux. Kain Harris had disappeared, then starts last game. Frederick didn't even play last game. Obviously Walker, Whittington and Avery are going to get starters minutes and average about 35 minutes, at least, but the other 95 minutes or so seem up for grabs still. Peterson may well be better off the bench, in a "6th man" type role.

It is an annual thing with KSU. i do not follow other college teams enough to know if it is true across the league or the fifty nifty United States.

Is this about Superfan? I do appreciate her intensity, but the high-pitched screaming can grate on my nerves at times. I noticed it watching the game on TV yesterday. When I go to the games, it's hard to ignore. I'm usually OK with load noises, and I'm rooting for the same team as her, but that repeated yell does cause a negative reaction in me. I could emphasize that a ref might have the same reaction.

Lets outlaw booing then. We don’t want anyone to get their feelings hurt.

Honestly, some of our fans could take some lessons from Heather. They come, get their free meal amd sit on their ass for two hours. Sounds like a hell of a night.

Somewhere on this forum after a game last year - I said if Buffalo keeps their roster intact they would have a shot in 2019 at matching what our Elite 8 team accomplished in the MAC - that does now look possible. Still we can hope they trip up some along the way. Toledo still may be the best team in the west as I was surprised by Ball State's loss last night. It may be that there's Buffalo and everyone else.

fallsdog, you're probably right. Now that I think about it, it is a little early for a coach to have his final rotation scheme in place.

OLNWFLSH, you are right. Even the best teams can stumble a time or two. If it should happen in the MAC tournament, Buffalo would not be a sure thing for an at-large bid, but would have the best shot since Miami made it in 1999.

RE: Kent State vs. Western Michigan - Muskrat - 01-09-2019 07:11 PM

I don't mind Superfan. It's good to see her enjoy herself. Given the size of the school, the population of NE Ohio, and the success over the last 20 years, the place SHOULD be packed and noisy to the point where she could hardly be heard over the din. But, that's another story that has been rehashed countless times.

RE: Kent State vs. Western Michigan - anti-zip - 01-09-2019 09:44 PM

Something I think we need to do a better job of is drawing up plays to get Walker good looks from three. He's getting a ton of attention from the defenses so we need to work harder to get him good looks.

We got a favorable draw with the MAC west schedule this year. WMU and EMU are the two teams we play twice. Currently they're the only two teams under .500 in the MAC. It will be interesting to see how we look against EMU this weekend. We've got the shooters to handle the zone but Thompson will likely give us fits.

Beg to differ ... Eastern is a terrible draw. Basically same team as last year that drilled Kent at Kent, and Kent was a MUCH bigger team last season.

Kent will have to play at its highest level to pull this one out ... both times.
