Divisionless Big Ten - GE and MTS - 01-03-2019 07:33 PM
If the Big Ten decided to go divisionless and match the two teams with the best conference record in the championship, who do you think would be each school's top three locked opponents?
For Penn State, I imagine they would want Ohio State, Rutgers, and Maryland. The conference is rumored to have brought in Maryland and Rutgers specifically for PSU and Ohio State is the only school Penn State has played annually without a break since the joined the conference.

Buckeyes- Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin or Nebraska. Not 100% sure with the 3rd spot. I'd even be happy with Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue or Michigan State there.

for Rutgers, it'd have to be Penn State and Maryland plus basically a rotation of Ohio State/Michigan.

For the Terps its Penn State and Rutgers. I don't know about the 3rd spot. For me personally I'd like to see Indiana. Give me a school that's on a "similar" level to us. Not that I don't like seeing Ohio State or Michigan kick our butts (or shoot, even Wisconsin & Iowa who we've played EVERY year) but we need some rotation. We have yet to play Nebraska, played Purdue and Illinois once...

I’m no B1G expert so Ohio St with Illinois may be a requirement. Ohio St drops Michigan St and adds Illinois. Illinois adds Ohio St and drops Indiana. Indiana drops Illinois and adds Michigan St.

Michigan being the RIVAL, and Penn State being guaranteed a rivalry game with Ohio State when they joined the conference. Penn State made sense being both states are very similar in football from grade school to pros. They are also neighbors with some family across state lines.
The third game SHOULD be Illinois. Reason being that they were the oldest continuous series prior to Penn State being added. That series was our second rival after scum, plus it has the Illi-Buck, the only trophy game Ohio State plays (between fraternities).

Illinois has played Indiana 71 times but has played Purdue 94 times and currently plays them annually in the same division.
Michigan St has played Purdue 67 times but has played Indiana 65 times and currently plays them annually in the same division.

I thought this was a really good map someone made when talk of divisions were discussed before. Darkest line are big rivals, middle ones are secondary, thinnest ones are minor ones/trophy games that might not qualify as ones.
I think you try to preserve as many of those lines (at least the darker 2) as possible. I'd probably do the following:
Maryland: Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan State
Rutgers: Maryland, Penn State, Nebraska
Penn State: Ohio State, Rutgers, Maryland
Ohio State: Michigan, Penn State, Illinois
Michigan: Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan State
Michigan State: Michigan, Indiana, Maryland
Indiana: Purdue, Michigan State, Northwestern
Purdue: Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern
Northwestern: Indiana, Illinois, Purdue
Illinois: Purdue, Northwestern, Ohio State
Wisconsin: Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota
Minnesota: Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan
Iowa: Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin
Nebraska: Iowa, Wisconsin, Rutgers
The ones underlined were the extra ones I filled out last and you could probably rearrange those however you felt fit.
One other random thought. With 9 conference games, it's possible they would not just have the other 10 teams rotate through the open 6 games. I'd probably vote for that, but if they wanted to lock schedules a bit more, there is 2 things they could do:
a) They could have a pure rotation where you play your 3 locked games every year, everyone else (5 games a year) half the time, and the last conference game could be scheduled after the last season with the idea of balancing schedules to the best that they can. Say Northwestern looks really strong, but is scheduled to miss the top 3 other teams. They would be scheduled with one of them while someone with a heavy schedule could be given a predicted easier opponent (note: home and away does complicate this approach)
b) it is possible to have a set-up where you play 3 teams every year, 4 teams 3 of 4 years, and the other 6 team half the time.

With 9 conference games, there is a number of combos you could set up
3 permanent rivals that play each year
4 rivals that play 3 out of 4 years
6 teams that play 2 out of 4 years
Or
4 permanent rivals that play every year
2 rivals that play 3 out of 4 years
7 teams that play 2 out of 4 years
Or
5 permanent rivals that play every year
8 teams that play 2 out of 4 years.
