Bowl Challenge Cup - HogDawg - 01-02-2019 12:28 AM

I think CUSA just won ESPN's "Bowl Challenge Cup" for this year. Can anyone confirm?

CUSA was the only FBS conference to win more than 60% of its Bowl games.

RE: Bowl Challenge Cup - BRtransplant - 01-02-2019 06:25 AM

Yes indeed! Now tied with the MWC as four time Champs which is tops for all conferences.

RE: Bowl Challenge Cup - Ourland - 01-02-2019 11:52 AM

I bet ESPN doesn't speak a word of it on any of their broadcasts.

Glad we actually won something as a conference! 02-13-banana
Now, having said that, here are the crucial questions:
1. What will Judy and the Conference hierarchy do to promote the conference in light
of this achievement? 03-banghead
2. Could this be of any benefit to us in contract negotiations over our future TV
deals?04-cheers
3. What does ESPN do for the Bowl Challenge Cup Winner? 07-coffee3

RE: Bowl Challenge Cup - usm99 - 01-02-2019 12:42 PM

but we all know how this plays out in the media......when it fits their agenda and the perceived conference wins its game it's because that team/conference is proving its dominance. However, when said team/conference loses the game it's because said team/conference didn't have anything to play for so the effort wasn't there.

To me that's why the Fiesta Bowl was the perfect fit for those 2 teams in the "only if we had" bowl. UCF can/did say "had we had our regular QB we would've won" yet on the flip side LSU easily counters with "we had 8 (or was it 9) defensive starters missing so had we had those it would've balanced out".

If I am not mistaken, how the conference does in bowls determines how much share they get from playoff revenue, so we would get a larger share of the crumbs when compared to years we didn't win the cup.

Hope you are right. God knows, we all can use the extra coins.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the differences in bowl scheduling honestly make the BCC a non-factor.

If we really wanted to know what conference was better, we could schedule our champions in a bowl. 05-stirthepot

We already did and it was a blowout against the undefeated Sunbelt Champs. The champ that beat Appy by 20 in Boone

The Sunbelt on average had easier bowl games than CUSA. CUSAs 2 losses were to teams ranked #29 and #30. The Sunbelt's were to #81 and #91 according to Massey

If I am not mistaken, how the conference does in bowls determines how much share they get from playoff revenue, so we would get a larger share of the crumbs when compared to years we didn't win the cup.

How conferences perform in bowls is not the determinant for CFP revenue sharing. It does not hurt to win your bowls because it factors into their performance rankings, but the whole season is considered. The Bowl Challenge Cup is a feather in the cap for CUSA, but does not result in any monetary gain unless the bowl results themselves vault CUSA above the MAC or Sun Belt in the CFP rankings when taking into account the season as a whole. The Bowl Challenge Cup is an ESPN creation, not affiliated with the CFP.

This is how CFP revenue is distributed to the G5:

From this Forbes article from the 2017-18 season:

Quote:"Group of 5

$81.32 million collective pool

The so-called "Group of 5" (the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference and Sun Belt Conference) divide their pool each year pursuant to an agreement and formula devised by those conferences. Although that formula has not been formally disclosed to the public, reports have the majority shared equally, with a small portion set aside to be distributed based on performance."

The "small portion set aside for performance" is what we're all fighting for, and it takes into account the whole season. This resulted in these numbers for 2017-18 and 2016-17: http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2017-18DIFBB_CFP_Summary-of-Revenue-Distribution-by-Conference_20180430.pdf. There is also a $4M bonus for the NY6 participating G5 conference, which is included in these numbers. Furthermore, some conferences split this equally among all football schools (Sun Belt included), while others (I believe the AAC does this) give more to the NY6 participant.

The 2018-19 numbers will be released in April 2019.

But I thought the AAC was the 6th Power Conference, that Bowl Record 2 - 5 is 2nd worst only the MAC is worst. 04-jawdrop

Utah St ended up being ranked 21 (Coaches) / 22 (AP).
