RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - 2Buck - 03-11-2020 02:35 PM

For a guy looking to climb the coaching ladder, JMU would be the perfect move. They have 2 options:

Stay where they are and hold out for a bigger opportunity, but they'd have to continue to maintain a high level of success at their current school. The risk being a bad season or two could sour P5 schools. It's like an elite underclassman staying for his senior year instead of declaring for the NBA draft, why risk injury or a reduction in production and jeopardize your stock?

or

Take a job at JMU, make more money, and look the hero/genius for dramatically turning a program around. A struggling P5 program would value a guy that just demonstrated a miraculous turnaround, especially if he were to double or triple attendance. And let’s face it- JMU should be easy to turn around.

That's a very interesting name to be sure. A smart guy that went to Wharton and knows his basketball.

If Greenberg is out of the picture, I'm relieved. I think that that would be a big mistake. Ever since I've seen his name floated, have had trouble getting excited about him as the guy.

A bit too much like Manning at Wake Forest (with NO coaching experience outside AAU?) for my taste.

Would get some buzz for sure, but this is another “experiment” to me, not an coach with a successful record. Would be a total dice roll on whether or not a good player can be a good coach.

I was thinking at lunch, for the most part JMU is hard to predict when looking for new coaches for football and men's basketball.

Was Matt Brady high on the radar? No
Was Mickey Matthews high on the radar? I don't think so.
Was Withers high on the radar? No
Was Lou high on the radar? No
Was Houston high on the radar? No although I think we mentioned him on here.
Was Cig on the radar? Yeah, he was likely #1 on the radar.

Legler was finalist for job at this alma mater LaSalle in 2018

Apparently he was also recruited by JMU in the 80s.

Legler? No thanks. There’s no evidence he can coach.

He was a great 3 point shooter for the Wizards/Bullets.

Seems like less talented players succeed more often in coaching. I'd guess it's because the talented players can rely on their talent, while less talented always have to be thinking of how & where they can gain an advantage. Not always, but more times that not it seems.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - jmu98 - 03-11-2020 03:35 PM

I'd say he was a guy that made the most of his talent and therefore may make a good coach.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Dukester - 03-11-2020 03:36 PM

Actually if JMU was going for a 3 point shooting coach, it would likely be Kent.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Dukes84 - 03-11-2020 03:37 PM

I would rate Legler over Greenberg.

Exactly. That's the kind of magical thinking that got us Louis Rowe.

(03-11-2020 01:52 PM)KickItToScotty Wrote:  Good to see. While personally I certainly agree with Dunk on what it would take for me to go from Radford to JMU, all the supposed interest from Mike Jones is a good sign salary wise too. I doubt he's going from $300k/yr at a program he's already turned around to a CAA program that needs a major turnaround if the offer is just Matt Brady money.

Sounds to me like the money budgeted for the position has leaked out. I'm preparing for bargain candidates.

Why do you say that?

What candidates that are realistic are no longer involved because of money? My guess pay range is in the $500+ range plus bonuses which I think can get us a very good coach. I think Jones can be had for low to mid 400's. To get a guy like Richey I think we have to pay a premium to make him a leave a really good situation.

Just a hunch (and that's partly based on our history and who's budgeting for this position).

Jones's name has been thrown around by several people. If the job and salary increase were a no brainer, would he be risking JMU moving on in a different direction because he's "not close to making a decision"?

The reference to Greenberg, who I really didn't consider viable, I think is telling too. With his connections, he pretty much knew everything he needed to know about the position...except what the compensation package would be. I think he knows that now.

The Q&A with coaches article (I forget where I read it) on the potential attractiveness of the job had some comments that confirmed some of my thinking. This is not a job that coaches are going to chase the bus after. Which is probably why we were stuck with the thinking that hiring Rowe was a great idea last time.

Perhaps. Let him prove it (that he can coach) at another institution, and then get back to JMU.

JMU can’t bet on drawing to an inside straight with this hire. The next HC must have demonstrated by direct experience they know how to be a successful HC.

Sometimes that's because they have more time to sit on the bench and observe which I think is extremely valuable. That makes them get a feel for the flow of the game and player mechanics. That's if they're paying attention and not just sitting there. Some coaches have them keeping stat sheets etc. which I think is very good training. I'm also of the opinion that point guards make good coaches because they have to manage the game while they're on the floor. A coach also has to be a good teacher. One of the things I notice about Coach O'Regan is that he is constantly teaching. When one of his players comes off the floor he will often pull her aside and talk with her quite earnestly and you can tell it's a teaching moment.

I don't know any of the guys you're talking about but those are my observations about coaching in general.

From what the hoop dirt website is showing, we are mostly or all-in on interviewing current head coaches.
