Lotta truth there. It's a vicious circle sometimes in the scheduling game. Gotta hope enough of the regionals just view us a tune up game so they'll overlook the rating drain.

Will Wade might be available.

I wonder if there's a NCAA rule keeping someone from coaching from behind bars?

Something else to consider if Rowe doesn’t pull off 4 wins in 4 days...
His contract started at $260,000 annually which we now see as being way Overpaid for the results he has delivered. Brady’s last year was $302,000.

Assuming annual raises would have been similar for both, JMU saved about $126,000 over the course of 3 years. Relative to where we were in 2016, JMU really only has to find $150,000 somewhere in the budget to make the change after the season.

Of course, while there has been a financial savings for salary, there has been a massive negative financial impact on the program. Ticket sales/attendance are atrocious and fundraising for the new arena has been hampered.

When looking at the big picture, it is too costly to Keep Rowe.

Hart,

Very interesting take and after seeing it that way an embarrassing loss to Towson and it could be over.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - NJDuke97 - 03-08-2019 08:39 AM

Do you know the fund raising/ arena part to be true? If so that could be an impetus to change sooner. To be honest I’ve always thought you exaggerated that piece because you didn’t like the Brady firing and the Rowe hire.

If you are speculating/exaggerating on that piece I don’t see the real financial downside of giving Rowe a fourth year prior to the new arena opening- the difference in attendance will be negligible. I sense we may see a road heavy OOC next year in preparation for maximum home games in 20-21.

20-21 is the game changer for me- going into that season JMU needs to know 100% that Rowe is the guy and the program has turned the corner or else you need to go a different direction.

Btw if Jmu wanted to explore Pat Kelsey at Winthrop his season is over after losing in the first round of the Big South tournament yesterday. He has a good recruiting class coming in and he spurned Umass a couple of seasons ago. Umass is in pretty bad shape and Matt McCall (formerly of Chattanooga) is struggling there.

While I agree with you, I don't think the admin sees it that way. If they fire Rowe now, it will be admitting that they made a huge mistake and I don't think they're ready to admit that.

Hire a coach with experience as a head coach and has been successful as a head coach.
It's still head scratching to me how little they have learned from their past mistakes. We deserve exactly what we are getting and the admin needs to go down with this ship.

JMU has the winning-est sports program in Virginia and our endowment is increasing more than it has under any previous president, but by all means crucify the people at the top because the basketball program at an educational institution has flopped for two decades.

It's not all flowers and daisies but it's a pretty good time to be a JMU Duke.

I'm not saying the admin should be fired. I should have used a better term, but it just baffles me how they can get practically everything right with JMU athletics, but when it comes to Men's Basketball (and baseball to a degree) they throw all of that out the window. They have crushed it with so many great hires across the board. They hire the right way. They go after coaches that win.
Except when it comes to men's basketball.
And that's why I don't give them a pass. They know better, because they do it the right way with practically all the other sports.
Do I think they should be fired? Absolutely not! But they need to be accountable for their mistakes. I feel like this could have been prevented. That's why I say we are getting what we deserve. When I say "go down with the ship", I mean that they will ride this out with Rowe and in a way deserve to and see the attendance get lower and lower and ticket sales and revenue go down. Perhaps then and only then will they learn.
If JMU athletics wasn't as successful as it is, this could be and would be overlooked. They are a victim of their success. They aren't stupid people which is why I just don't understand how they can get it so right on almost everything else, yet get it so so wrong with men's basketball.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Hart Foundation - 03-08-2019 02:20 PM

All decisions have consequences.
Let's take a little deeper look at the financial question since some posters think that is the only barrier to making the correct firing/hiring decision.

When comparing the JMU athletics financial reports that were released in January 2016 to the ones released in January 2019, the following statements are true...

1- JMU has increased its annual athletics spending by $6.9 million from $44.8 million to $51.7 million
2- JMU has decreased it annual men's basketball spending by $200,000 ($100,000 of that is due to lower head coach and asst coach compensation)

Can we suggest that the money is indeed there, but is being allocated to other programs in the athletic department? Sure, scholarship prices have gone up and travel costs have increased due to annual inflation, but that doesn't account for all of the $6.9 million increase.
*If you are thinking about the facility debt, it was actually $200,000 lower than 3 years ago.

For reference, the FCS football budget has increased $3.6 million. 04-jawdrop The women's basketball budget has increased $150,000. All Other sports budgets combined have increased $1.5 million.

These "budget numbers" for all D1 MBB were posted on RamNation back in March 2017. A correction is that they aren't budget numbers but actual reported expenses. JMU is #110 with $3,483,621 in expenses. According to the financial statement (2016) from JMU's finance website, our revenues for Men's BB were $1,344,399.

Edit: apples and oranges but I looked up VCU's revenues (I could only find 2016) for MBB Total revenue $7,422,169. Expenses $1,201,268.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - NJDuke97 - 03-08-2019 04:56 PM

All well and good- can you just provide some context on the declining fund raising since Rowe has been hired? If that’s true it’s a reason to move on.

So we find out that Wade isn’t a good coach, he simply is a guy that cheats to get good players. Honestly, many and maybe most of the so called good coaches are cheating to get good players. There is too much money involved not to have some cheats. How many are there?

Lou is a young coach and still learning. We all hate losing. I keep asking myself is Lou the type of leader who can eventually find success and become the coach we all yearn for or is he in above his head? Do we need patience or is Lou a lost cause? Sincere questions I am trying to find the answers to.

I do know Lou runs a clean program. He has recruited good players that are also good people. That matters. Doing things the right way matters. Sometimes the road to success takes longer when you do things the right way.

Patience or cut bait? There are costs either way. These decisions are why being an administrator is tough.

Easy decision IMO given all variables- bring Lou back for year 4 but no more excuses. The team has to be a winner in his 4th season or you move another direction for the opening of the new arena.

That's my position as well, as I've posted before. The timing of firing him now is just awful. A clean break, if it doesn't work going forward, is much easier after next season. JMU has a very nice roster next season with Rowe, with room for at least one more player. Without him, we're possibly looking at another string of losing seasons before any hope of getting out of the morass.

I say it again, poll knowledgeable basketball people regarding where JMU's roster ranks next season within the CAA based on talent. Wright-Foreman, Cacok, Pusica, Carter and others are moving on. Yes, JMU loses Mosley, but adds four impressive freshman, Flowers and at least one other player. Meanwhile, hopefully JMU returns a healthy Banks, Lewis, Parker and Wilson. A very nice roster indeed!

In bringing him back, perhaps stipulate the addition of an experienced assistant or two.

Not having Phillips or Banks certainly makes for a convenient excuse as to why we get blown today. Rowe is a genius

We deserve exactly what we are getting and the admin needs to go down with this ship.

they need to admit they made a mistake and move on. Anybody that has ever played organized team basketball can see that he has no idea what he's doing on the sidelines. And with game management. it was stupid to hire a coach That had very limited assistant coaching experience and put him in charge of a division 1 program.
