RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - NJDuke97 - 03-20-2020 09:34 PM

Just keep in mind-No matter who the hire was there was always going to be someone who didn’t have all great things to say about them. At least he has a track record and is more
Proven as a head coach ( more than any of our last hires post Lefty have been). The Ga Southern poster said after 7 years and 20 win seasons he couldn’t get over the jump- hate to make an excuse but who’s to say this year wouldn’t have been the year. His team was in the semi- finals of the Sun Belt before the season was cancelled and then who knows maybe he’s out of our league.

That's a fair statement. But again, we lost 4 games blowing double digit leads, three at home ... twice against bitter rivals in front of a packed house. The patterns are there if you objectively review it. I'm a passionate fan but I pride myself on being objective. I didn't expect him to win when we had no recruits. His early years were better than these last two, in my opinion.

He is a fine person. He'll get your program some W's. He will be an honest guy, you'll never have to worry about the integrity of the program. But there will be situations that drive you crazy because he doesn't instill that killer instinct in the club, he pulls back. Unless he grows as a coach. It hadn't changed for the duration of the time he was in Statesboro, but to be clear I'm not indicting him as a bad coach.

I sincerely hope he does well.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - 2Buck - 03-20-2020 09:50 PM

Well, I guess Brady 2.0 is better than Rowe 2.0

Folks have every right to be disappointed, just based on results at GSU (no titles or NCAAs) it flies in the face of what we were being told (and sold). Not sure if sub-$500k was the max and we priced ourselves out of better options, but his compensation seems fair. The 6 years and large buyout are of concern though if things don't work out.

My hope- knowledgeable sources helped our leadership identify Coach B as a rising star vs our leadership just looking for their usual boxes to check.

My gut tells me these guys will never change when it comes to their men's BB coach philosophy but maybe we all luck out with this one.

Welcome coach, I'm pulling for ya.

No reports of him interviewing at UNCW, and it was rumored we never really had much interest in hiring him, for whatever reason.

Nation, were UNCW fans hoping that Byington would be an option for the job?

Yes, and I think he would have been a very good option. He's a good hire for you guys.

In the press release, I see Alger, Bourne, King and Battle mentioned prominently. That made me cringe a little. They brought us the Lou Rowe hire. Was hoping against hope that group would have had a reduced impact this time around-guess it was wishful thinking. The hire may turn out to be a great one- who knows? Doesn't move the needle, a needle I thought we desperately needed to move. I'll give the new guy a chance though.

...I know Bobby Cremins. And, I'm proud to say he knows me. Great guy. Hell of a coach. Just for me and not expecting anybody else to agree or care, but knowing he comes from Bobby's coaching tree does my heart good.

Now, the crazy thought...

...Byington is tied to Cremins. Bobby still is very close to GT. GT has 3 guys who have entered the transfer portal. One is 6'9" power forward, Evan Cole, who signed with UNCW out of HS but got out of his LOI and went to GT when Keatts decided to head to NC State. Give him a call. He'd be an immediate difference maker for the JMU program. Will have 1 year of eligibility left. He may have his eyes set for bigger programs, but he's leaving GT in hopes of being a starter and 35 mpg kind of guy.

The other 2 guys in the portal from GT are Asanti Price, 6'3" shooting guard, who was a freshman this past season and Kristan Sjolund, 6'8" stretch 4, who redshirted this past season and will also have 3 years of eligibility remaining. I doubt any of these are legit options, but wouldn't mind seeing Byington attract a guy or two out of the transfer portal with any ties he might have.

Unless we usher out a handful of Rowe's shooting guards that can't actually shoot, the only scholarship we have is from Pinkard's departure.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - JMUNation - 03-21-2020 12:13 AM

I told you guys you would be underwhelmed but you just kept living in dreamland with Pitino and JT III. There was no way JMU was making a splash hire. I am grateful they at least went the experienced head coach route.

I think a bunch of guys transfer. Lewis is dating Oppenheimer's daughter. Oppenheimer wanted the job. JMU passed on him. Lewis might leave with future father in law.

If Banks leaves, I am cool with it. He only shoots well when the game is already decided. He plays poor defense and disappears late in games.

If Wilson leaves, I don’t care either. He is one dimensional on offense and plays little defense.

Jacobs won’t leave. Mom and Dad are grads and live in Richmond. He is a good student and won’t be playing pro ball anywhere. He finishes his education at JMU.

Flowers will get run off due to inability to play due to health issues.

Will be interesting to see what happens but my money is on 2-4 transfers and guys taken out of the portal to take their spots.

I am okay with the hire. He was the top assistant at COC under Cremins. Has had success at a program known to stink at basketball. He is from Virginia and values defense. He was the Virginia state player of the year in high school. Had a successful college career in the CAA. While nothing on his resume jumps off the page at me, his experience seems to say solid coach who could take the next step in the right environment. This guy seems like he will fit well at JMU.

I have no confidence in this administrations ability to spot basketball coaching talent. I am pissed that they threw away four years of my basketball fandom by hiring an unqualified head coach in Lou Rowe. They should have kept Brady if Rowe was the best they could do and I love Rowe as a person.

I pray this guy can lift the program beyond what Brady could do. If he embraces Harrisonburg and makes JMU competitive again, people will buy tickets.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Dukes84 - 03-21-2020 12:59 AM

Just some observations on Byington.

1. A lot of his success was probably tied to Tookie Brown, a standout 5-11 guard that initially committed to Miss State. He last played in the Belgian league. Brown, if I'm recalling correctly, was mentioned in Bourne's release.
2. If you look at Kenpom, his best year was in top 105 or so and he has several top 150 finishes in quickly going thru it. Year Brady was fired JMU was in top 90 or so.
3. GA Southern is known more for football, of course, but they do have 24,000 students approximately.
4. Sun Belt this past year was a couple of notches above the CAA.
5. If you look at the VC site, his most recent team was filled with JUCOs. Geographically most of his roster comes from the SE. Byington is going to have to establish recruiting ties to the mid Atlantic.
6. Shooting percentages for his most recent team reminded me of JMU, unfortunately. Poor at all three levels.
7. Hire is based on his growth and potential going forward, as things seemed to have stalled out in Statesboro. Would have liked to have seen NCAA/NIT appearances.
8. Brady on paper certainly had a superior background coming in. I agree with Hart on that.
9. After the dismal basketball we just sat through (the worst I've ever seen), this guy is going to look like the Second Coming!

Ga southern might have been in worse shape than our program when he took over. He turned them around quickly in a very tough place to win. No ncaas since 1992 at Gsu. Wasn’t exactly a perennial ncaa team there.

His teams routinely are near top in scoring in ncaas. He will bring an exciting style. For real though. Not just talk like with rowe. He’s shown it already.

He had recruited top players. And to a place with no history and a worse arena than the convo.

Their fans seem disappointed he’s leaving. That’s a good sign. Remember Marist couldn’t wait to be rid of Brady, that was a red flag.

Which candidate out there was better? Mike jones? You guys ever wonder why jones hasn’t gotten a better head gig than Radford ? He’s 54 years old now, and the Radford gig is where he’s gone so far. I have no idea why. Never met the guy or paid much attention, but that to me is a concern.

I’m not sure where you came up with that idea about MB. Marist wanted to “be rid of Brady” so much they sued JMU over his departure (and after Marist had just extended his contract.

Marist fans.

Prove it. I’m pretty aware of these things. I didn’t read any Marist fan expressing displeasure with MB other than he jilted them for more money and a better school/conference after renegotiating his contract and promising he was committed to Marist. That’s not fan displeasure over MB’s performance as a coach, indeed it’s the exact opposite.

Sorry longhorn, I’m not into juvenile internet tough guy arguments.

That’s my recollection. You can disagree, and that’s ok. But I don’t need to “prove it”.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - nyduke - 03-21-2020 05:39 AM

Marist fans did not hate on brady at all. It wasnt until he left and marist ad went public that the community turned
On him. But now 12 years later an not one winning season later they have turned their ire toward administration

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Bawlmer Duke - 03-21-2020 06:17 AM

WINNER! 1/13/2020 I posted about Byington to JMU

https://csnbbs.com/thread-867451-post-16607371.html#pid16607371

And I had a post that the base pay would be $385-$460K. So he's in at $375K + $75K in supplemental (https://twitter.com/Shane_DNRSports/status/1241173294298079232)

This thread was great when people were throwing out well over $500K.

Alright now fellers...I'll put my crystal ball away.

Maybe I should apply for a job with this Todd Turner guy "Bourne continued, "I particularly want to thank Todd Turner and Collegiate Sports Associates, which has been instrumental in this search process..."

We should have 2 scholarships - they only used 12 this past season. 1 of the 2 we have a forward from Canada verbally committed to but no LOI.

84 I saw a bunch of 4 year recruits - will have to check the online rather than mobile version to see how many transfers out. The small guard he had another committed for this year as well/ under 6 foot. Rowe generally didn’t recruit small guards- he favored size. I think in mid major hoops the small quick guard can be very effective.

I think the resume point is debatable. Byington was a lead assistant for 7 years under Cremins then an interim coach his last year (went 7-4). Then he was an assistant (I’m guessing lead) at Va Tech. He has been a head coach for 7 years and had 5 winning seasons. The last 3 were 20 win. You would have liked to see more post season success for sure in terms of NIT or NCAA but I guess guys with that on their resume either weren’t interested in taking the chance or priced at a little higher level? Maybe some of this will come out- some will be in the form of speculation so we’ll probably never know. Jones has that on his resume but the others mentioned App State Furman Austin Peay didn’t have those post seasons either. All were younger winning coaches with experience leading a program in the southeast.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - JacksonHall - 03-21-2020 07:18 AM

The more I've read about Byington, the more I like the hire. He was a good player on the CAA. He's been an assistant with some good coaches, and he's a head coach who turned around a woeful program. He's got a reputation as a good recruiter and has an understanding of x and o basketball. Seems to check a lot of the boxes and adds some extra. I support him and I think with the returning team being so underwhelming this year he can turn things around next year with the top 4 finish that was expected this season.

Well at least he’s not lying this time about how he’ll support him like he said he would when Rowe was hired. I also enjoy him talking about the MBB program being destroyed in the last 4 years. That’s hilarious. Yup, pretty solid program. Just a 4 year dip. Riiiiiight...

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - HyperDuke - 03-21-2020 07:50 AM

Also, I suspect he’s more connected to his GF who remains a player than his GF’s dad.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - NJDuke97 - 03-21-2020 07:50 AM

I doubt Oppenheimer was even interested and considered for head coach? I know he has the NBA on his resume and we were all hopeful when he joined the staff but what qualifications does he have in terms of being a D1 head coach. A reminder Alex Wood and Withers have NFL coaching gigs on their resume- It’s not a big deal.

I’m sure a guy like that has self awareness In terms of where he is as a coach and doesn’t expect to be the next JMU head coach. You are probably just making a leap because his daughter goes to JMU.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Deez Nuts - 03-21-2020 07:54 AM

We’ve got a coach that checks most of the JMU boxes and Hartt is still mad WHO SAW THAT COMING??

Looks like a good fit to me. Looking forward to hearing more from HCMB... hopefully sooner meaning we’re past some of this virus mess.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - KickItToScotty - 03-21-2020 07:56 AM

I think it’s a pretty big assumption to think it’s a given Lewis cares more about being JMU’s all time leading scorer than he cares about playing at a higher level and cared about playing for Lou. Obviously his girlfriend being at JMU is a positive though. I hope you’re right, but I could definitely see him leaving.

I also thought a lot of people took his “a lot of us shouldn’t be playing at this level” quote out of context but it still shows he, well, thinks he shouldn’t be playing at this level. If he gets interest from the type of programs he did before then I’d lean towards he leaves.
