RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Duke Dawg - 03-20-2020 07:06 PM

Before he was hired Gsu won

1, 9, 5, 14 and 15 games.

They were in keener territory before he was hired.

Got a good feeling. Seems like a good guy who’s won 20+ games at a school where not many people care about basketball, and he’s got in-state ties. I’m optimistic.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Duke Dawg - 03-20-2020 07:07 PM

Before his 3 20 win seasons the past five years, they had won 20 games once since 1991.

Day 1...

...he better teach these guys something about playing defense or it will be more of the SOS.

Underwhelmed as expected. But, he's our guy now like him or not. I'll get behind him...from a distance though.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - BSKB 24 - 03-20-2020 07:09 PM

I’m 100% behind him until I’m not.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - BSKB 24 - 03-20-2020 07:11 PM

I was behind Brady until he did away with summer camps and after I attended a couple of his practices.

Beating the beejeezus out of non-D1 Carver Bible College has served its purpose of getting him to 20 wins the last 2 seasons and 2 wins the year before over non-D1's, Bluefield State College and Tennessee Wesleyan.

Otherwise, your point is still valid...with an asterisk. 04-cheers

I completely agree with this unless I change my mind later. Seriously, I’m usually overly optimistic about these things so why change now I guess.

ditto !

First impression with my limited knowledge , looks like a good fit . Young winner who was under appreciated at current location . We only had so many realistic options ......and my first take is it looks promising

Last 3 years in the Sun Belt Tournament...

2018: won a quarterfinal and lost in semifinal
2019: same as 2018
2020: won both quarter and semifinal, lost in championship game

Those of you expecting another lefty hire were not living in reality.

I’m happy about this one and think it will turn out to be a good move.

Please explain.

Ga southern might have been in worse shape than our program when he took over. He turned them around quickly in a very tough place to win. No ncaas since 1992 at Gsu. Wasn’t exactly a perennial ncaa team there.

His teams routinely are near top in scoring in ncaas. He will bring an exciting style. For real though. Not just talk like with rowe. He’s shown it already.

He had recruited top players. And to a place with no history and a worse arena than the convo.

Their fans seem disappointed he’s leaving. That’s a good sign. Remember Marist couldn’t wait to be rid of Brady, that was a red flag.

Which candidate out there was better? Mike jones? You guys ever wonder why jones hasn’t gotten a better head gig than Radford ? He’s 54 years old now, and the Radford gig is where he’s gone so far. I have no idea why. Never met the guy or paid much attention, but that to me is a concern.

Two things I do like over Jones. 1) SunBelt is a stronger conference, 2) GSU beat Radford this year (but it was a 3pt game).

I'm not sure this is a homerun, but willing to give the guy a chance to show what he can do.

Huh? What am I missing, looks to me like it was canceled at Semis this year?

I'll be interested to see the staff he brings aboard with him, as well as his ability to keep last years team intact.

I was looking at this... http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2020/schedule/Georgia-Southern

Odd.

(I see now, must have been some kind of projected winner...sorry about that)

Welcome to JMU Coach Byington. Lets go Dukes

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - jmu007 - 03-20-2020 07:23 PM

Meh...

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - JacksonHall - 03-20-2020 07:23 PM

Just read the press release. Like I said I'd let the JMU marketing machine convince me they found the right guy once they selected a coach. Sounds like a good enough hire to me. At least he has experience being a successful head coach. Go Dukes and welcome Coach Byington!

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - NH/JMU Saxkow - 03-20-2020 07:24 PM

My opinion looking at this (considering I am definitely someone who lost almost all active interest in men's bball the past few years): I look at it as not a splashy hire, but it seems to be a smart hire - which I like.

He seems like someone who knows how to turn a program around - which we desperately needed. It looks like this will be a multi-year project to get back to respectability, so I am fine with having patience. I'm just looking for an upwards trajectory at this point.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - KickItToScotty - 03-20-2020 07:27 PM

I'm disappointed but hopeful. If you had told me back in January he'd be the next guy I'd feel better about it than I do now. Back then we all talked about how no D1 HC who's had any amount of success if going to be interested and how we might have to go D2 if we don't want to go with an assistant. Since then though, the names that have popped up have better resumes than Byington in my opinion. Jones and Byington both took programs in a very tough position and turned them around.

Jones, in six years with full scholarships, got Radford to where their last three seasons were 23-13/12-6(T-2nd), 22-11/12-4(T-1st), 21-11/15-3(T-1st) with a tournament appearance. Byington, in seven years, got GSU to where their last three seasons were 21-12/11-7(3rd), 21-12/12-6(T-2nd), 20-13/12-8(T-4th) and he has no tournament appearances in his seven years. The Sun Belt is quite a bit stronger than the Big South though.

Even compared to Jones it's a little tough for me to understand choosing Byington if it's true that both wanted the job. Throw in some others that we heard tossed around or hoped for like Richey or especially JTIII and it's more disappointing.

However it's not too hard to find reason to be optimistic. I think we would all agree that JMU basketball should have a higher ceiling than Georgia Southern. He seemed to have hit his ceiling at Georgia Southern, maybe that's pretty much where the ceiling is there for just about anyone and hopefully his ceiling at JMU will be quite a bit higher. We'll see.
