Yeah, I noticed something like 5 guys in the transfer portal for Wichita State last night. NE has lost a player and picked up one from Notre Dame.

Marshall is making 3 mill + a year. Even if he gets fired, the redemption train will not start in Harrisonburg.

Are they leaving because Wichita State is losing, or because he's a lousy coach? Something to think about before making a recommendation such as that.

Hi. I have nothing to add, just needed to get away from that other thread.

I think his track record is very good- not sure why they are all leaving at once but if you’re JMU you have to at least investigate if he was to get fired

Northeastern has 3 in the transfer portal, Drexel has 3 as well. Elon has 1.

They're being a bit cryptic on the NU board, but rumor is Bill Coen might be moving on.

Tomas Murphy, who has close personal/family ties to Coen, is one of the 3 players in the portal for NU. Hence the speculation.

Good point 98!

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - KickItToScotty - 03-17-2020 10:28 AM

He’s certainly not a lousy coach. Seven tournament appearances in nine seasons at Winthrop with a .700/.813. Seven tournament appearances including a Final Four and a Sweet 16 at Wichita State with a .739/.769.

Seemed to be a lot of locker room issues and a bit of a disconnect between the players and coaching staff at Wichita State this season. Both players and coaches talked about feeling that there were a lot of players worrying too much about themselves and not enough about the team. Might not be such a bad thing to have a decent amount of new blood in that locker room. If they do fire Marshall, which I doubt will happen, I agree with UofRfan that Marshall to JMU isn’t happening. Like Pitino and the other big names though, still should make them have to say thanks but no thanks.

That would be a lateral move at best. I get that he coached there previously and they have better resources, but if he's going to make a jump, he deserves to be able to make a big one rather than go to a place where he'll be immediately behind the 8 ball.

In short he needs to go to a place where they at least value basketball over hockey.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - UofRfan - 03-17-2020 10:41 AM

I heard rumors of dissatisfaction with Coen from the NE admin who added a new AD semi recently. He deserves an extension at this point but might not be getting it. If you could find a way to get him to Harrisonburg that would be a home run even if he loses the sexy battle between Shaka and Gregg Marshall, Forbes, vermont guy , and all the other pipe dream candidates.

They have talked about Coen and bigger jobs before but feels like this wouldn't be the year he gets one considering their underachievement in the regular season.

03-lmfao Please JMU, don’t be so tight lipped on this coaching search. We really need something to talk about.

"The five-year deal that was signed on March 13, will pay Siddle a base salary of $300,000, and can receive supplemental compensation of $75,000 in year one, with increasing increments of $25,000."

Siddle was making about $315K per as the top assistant at NC State.

Sounds like pretty shrewd negotiations by UNCW. Or maybe it was widely know that Siddle would do anything to be a head coach and the Dub just leveraged that knowledge. In either case, it sounds like they got him for cheap.

FWIW, this is basically the same contract every coach has gotten at UNCW after Buzz Peterson. Decent base with lots of incentives based on performance, attendance, OOC record, etc. Keatts, McGrath and now Siddle are all pretty much identical. This time UNCW added in a requirement to have a .500 record in the CAA to get the supplementary compensation that was not in the Keatts or McGrath contract. Honestly, if you are a coach and realize that winning games and titles is your job and you don't deserve bonuses for losing, it's not a bad contract.

He did make it to the conference finals and is a respected coach. The problem with some of these guys is their age and personality. Coen is a solid coach as is Mihalich but neither is a sexy hire by a big school. They aren’t young or brash. Jones suffers a little from that as well but that doesn’t mean that he can’t be a good coach for JMU. Richey has a little of that young/brash factor that schools look for.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - Dukesfan1971 - 03-17-2020 10:56 AM

I would take Jones or Miller in a heart beat.
Boston College should get Coen. If not we should offer him as well.

RE: Targets for next Head MBB Coach - NJDuke97 - 03-17-2020 11:01 AM

The latest in a high major assistant struggling at a mid major (who is paying him a lot of money) is Baker Dunleavy at Quinnipiac. He just lost his two best players to transfer and his teams have struggled on the court as well. Was rumored as a name when JMU hires Rowe but at the time we were told that Dunleavy is a Philly kid who wouldn’t coach at a rural school.
