Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-05-2018 09:27 AM

The Loyola University Greyhounds open this game as a 6 point underdog to our dragons. They have been up and down so far. They have pretty well lost to the average teams on their schedule and beat the lower teams. They are coming off of a 10 point victory over The Mount.

Their leading scorer is junior Andrew Kostecka. He is scoring 19 ppg while grabbing almost 6 rpg. He is 6'4 so he can cause matchup issues and he is a great free throw shooter, so we will need to stay in front of him and make sure not to foul if he gets by. He is shooting 86% from the line while getting to the line over 6 times a game.

They use a full roster. They have 9 players averaging 14 minutes a game. There will be a lot of different faces we need to account for. We are 6 point favorites and my gut is we win but its closer than that.

Loyola- 74
Drexel- 78

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-05-2018 07:49 PM

Pretty poor effort on defense in the first half. We allowed Loyola to shoot 65%. We are very fortunate to only be down 48-43. We are leading the rebounding edge 14-9. We shot just under 58% ourselves.

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-05-2018 07:51 PM

Kostecka has 16 on 6-7 shooting with 3-3 from 3 pt for Loyola leading the way. Demir leads the way in scoring for us with 12

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-05-2018 08:30 PM

Just under 10, 74-61 after a Trevor John 7th 3 pointer. He is hitting anything he throws up

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-05-2018 09:04 PM

95-86 victory. We shot 62% compared to their 58%. We won the rebounding margin 30-23. Difference was the FT line. Loyola shot 11-22 while we shot 22-25. We had 23 assists on 31 made field goals. We gave up way too many easy buckets but its nice how well we shared the ball to find good shots. Cam had a double double with 11 points and 10 assists. Butler also had a double double with 12 points and 10 boards. Kosteka killed us with 31 for Loyola. Nice win and keep it rolling against UMBC.

In 9 games, he has made at least 6 threes 3 times. Antoine Agudio, who is second in CAA history with 357 threes, never did that 3 times in one season.

RE: Loyola (MD) - J.B. - 12-05-2018 10:28 PM

It was a weak defensive effort in the first half, but once again, they came out strong in the 2nd half to pull out a win against a sub 300 team that they should beat at home.

Difference makers tonight. FT shooting once again...and Trevor John. Since Dom Mejia, I can't remember the last time that Drexel had such an strong, consistent 3 point shooter. Iceman could have become that guy if he stayed at Drexel. I'm still not sure what to expect with this team. They're getting some nice wins against some weak competition. Not sure if these wins will translate into a lot of CAA wins. But the CAA isn't looking very strong thus far, so you never know.

Spiker blew M. Juric redshirt.. I don't know why!

Per Philly.com

Injury update: Junior swingman Zach Walton is out for the rest of the year because of the right wrist injury he suffered in the Nov. 28 game against NJIT. Drexel said Walton had surgery on the wrist earlier this week.

I am guessing he will be medical redshirted?

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-06-2018 07:34 AM

They could and likely will send in to the NCAA to apply for the medical hardship. Whether he is granted it is hard to say. He played quite a few games, so my gut says he is out of luck, but you never know.

As far as the fans and students, this should be a team that should get a strong following. The administration and leaders of the Pack should be promoting the hell out of the exciting brand of basketball we are playing. The team is flat out exciting to watch their ball movement and scoring. Sure their defense stinks, but if you are trying to draw in interested fans who may not care all that much about basketball, this style should do it, even when we dont win. I was just thinking about the 2011/2012 team that just missed the NIT semis. If that team with their athleticism played in spikers up-tempo style, I really believe that team could have done some serious damage in the NCAA. We all know that Bruiser played his style regardless of his personnel and we know the Frantz and Damion and Fouch preferred a faster pace. Even with much worse defense that team would have been even more fun to watch. It is why I say that our fans, who got used to strong defensive teams, should be ok with this style because the motion we run and the shots we get, is fun. It is exciting. They are easy to root for.

Trevor's spree of 3's last night was very much like that of Damion's against Mason that has been brought back to life recently. It is a shame we only get him for 1 season, but he is going to give CAA teams all kind of hell.

Walton has played just 7 games this year. A few years back, Megan Creighton played 7 games before she got hurt and she was granted the waiver. Walton is the perfect situation for why the NCAA has that rule. Hopefully it's granted.

It felt like there was nobody at the game last night other than scattered season ticket holders and comps. Then a few minutes into the game, I looked over at the student section, and their must have been about 200 students there. The Dac Pack, which usually has about 2-3 rows of fans, was about 7-8 rows deep. So maybe the message is getting out that this is a fun team to rally behind, and being in a rabid student fan section can be a lot of fun to be a part of.

RE: Loyola (MD) - MedicSBK - 12-06-2018 09:26 AM

Another fun game. I have some reservations about the loss of Walton but there are a lot of positives that we are seeing from this team both for this year and the future. Student section looked great but now its time for the alumni and fans to follow suit.

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-06-2018 09:26 AM

Absolutely. Getting them engaged and in yellow is a different story, but getting them in and exposed to the product is step one. It seems to be moving in the right direction from the last couple of broadcasts. It is an easy style to root for especially for non basketball people. Things that get kids excited with little knowledge of the game are high scoring fast paced games, and dunks. We do not dunk a lot but the pace and style make it entertaining. Just like when Frank Elegar or Leon Spencer came through. While style and pace was not good for those teams, they dunked a lot and it got crowds excited. Both work. Keep the growth going is what I say. It is happening and it needs to keep going. This team is fun, even in losses, for students and fans.

Based on the 30% of games, first half of season, and severity of injury he should qualify. He did already have a medical redshirt season at Edmonds CC, so he would be going for a sixth year (like Fouch did). As long as he graduates by the end of the 19-20 season, I think he would get approved. I suppose whether he wants to stay or not would be the question.

I don't think the plan was ever to red shirt Juric. He didn't play early on because of injury. But especially with Kurk's extended injury, as good as Wynter is, you can't go forward with him as the only option at point guard. Harper played there a few minutes and the results were not something that would give much confidence going forward.

Right now Coletrane and Matey are the only two guys off the bench at guard, you can't just expect the starters to go 40 minutes. Doi might be a serviceable option against teams like Clarion and Bryn Athyn, but when you have guys on scholarship who can fill the role, you can't blame Spiker for using them.

RE: Loyola (MD) - dan10 - 12-06-2018 01:25 PM

Agreed. The injury helped make an easy case, but I dont think Matey was ever going to be redshirted this season. I think Coltrane would have been if not for the injuries and need to have an extra body.

You are correct.. the intention was to redshirt Washington this year.

Yes sir - can't wait to see TJ in Blue and Gold

Cam had two nice lobs (that I've seen) last night. He and TJ should be fun.
