Myrtle Beach Bowl - Ewglenn - 11-13-2018 03:52 PM

Looks like it is going to be played at CCU’s newly expanded stadium. They will be rotating the MAC, SBC and CUSA. Do you think there is any desire to switch from the Cure Bowl to this one when it starts in 2020? Benefits over the Cure Bowl is it’s closer and will be on ESPN’s networks. Orlando would be more fun and better for recruiting. So what do you think?

At this point, I just want to see LU go to bowl games regardless of location. I'm find with both locations.

RE: Myrtle Beach Bowl - GE and MTS - 11-13-2018 06:52 PM

I think the Cure Bowl would be better for Liberty unless they could get first dibs on a bowl instead of being an alternate. Right now, the AAC is usually unable to fill their slot in the Cure Bowl. Florida is better for exposure too, especially Liberty.

So what if the exposure difference is ESPN2 compared to CBSSN? That obviously would be a big difference. Idk which channel it will be on with ESPN they just said on one of the ESPN’s.

I think ESPN coverage would be the tipping point for television viewers but that could set the game up for being on a Wednesday night or something bad like that. I think the Cure Bowl would be easier to earn a spot.

At this point a bowl game is a bowl game. But whichever game gets LU before the most viewers or maybe the greater opponent should be the way to go.

Greater opponent= Cure
Greater viewer= probably Myrtle

Both bowls are same level...

That being said, I think it would be better for Liberty to play the better school in a bowl, that in turn will do more for recruiting and prestige.

ESPN and CBSSN are not equal.

Point is that nobody is really interested in either bowl of you are not associated with the teams playing. That's why I would opt for the bowl with the better opponents.

The worst bowl game in terms of ratings brought in 1.08 million viewers in 2016. The ratings say there are a lot of “interested” people. The Cure Bowl does have a tie to the AAC but they’ve only filled it once. The SBC has filled it every year which means it’s likely to be a SBC team.

RE: Myrtle Beach Bowl - GE and MTS - 11-16-2018 10:13 PM

What's the best case scenario opponent wise if we somehow get a connection into the Myrtle Beach Bowl? App State? Marshall? I have no idea as C-USA, MAC, and Sun Belt schools are the bottom of the totem pole. Any Sun Belt school would be playable in the Cure Bowl if the AAC couldn't fulfill their slot. But playing against an AAC opponent gives us the chance to potentially play UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, Navy, etc. I'm not convinced the Cure Bowl is a better choice for LU than the Myrtle Beach Bowl, but we'd be in potentially better company.

Another way to look at this is look at the other bowls. How many P5 vs. G5 matchups are there? We can count on one hand the number, right? P5 schools want to play other P5 and the bowls and networks find it most profitable and advantageous to set it up that way. I don't know that we should voluntarily limit ourselves to the bottom of the G5.

I'm talking interest in relative terms. They are both bottom tier bowls.

If you were eligible, and had a choice, the best one to play would be against the more prominent program. That's all I am trying to say.

By the way, I'm a Liberty fan (since the ASun membership), so I would want Liberty to go to the best bowl they can play in. Hopefully we will see yall on the feild one day.

I know what you are saying. I also am pulling for you guys. My point is it depends on what channel the MBB is on. If it’s ESPN I’d prefer it.

My reasons:
Doubtful we will play an AAC school since this is essentially their last bowl (cure) so itd be a SBC team.
Three different conferences so more teams for a different opponent each time.
MBB is closer to the SBC east teams so more than likely teams would prefer that one over Cure because of travel for fans. App and CCU
ESPN is way better than CBSSN
Smaller venue looks better on tv for attendance

I assume they aren’t going to change the turf for the game..... or would they? Isn’t that field teal colored? It would be fantastic advertising for CCU with their logos in the endzones.

See: Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
It’s played on the smurf turf @ Boise State. They change the midfield logo and end zones.

Yeah they would change logos but the turf would still be teal.

You aren't doing it voluntarily. You are the bottom of the G5. That is where you are. You just moved up from the FCS, and already believe you are too good to play G5 teams in bowl games? Not only that, but you believe you can voluntarily pick which P5 bowl games you want to play in? Get real, guy.

I'm sorry but I'm aiming high for Liberty. Of course we aren't there yet! But I sure as heck don't want to be mistaken for a Sun Belt, MAC, or C-USA school. The premise of the thread is to debate if we would prefer the Myrtle Beach Bowl or the Cure Bowl, thus me stating my preference as if we had a voluntary option between the two. As far as I know, that is not reality but that is irrelevant for the thread.

And nowhere did I state we are P5 but I used them as an example for how our mindset should be. Do you want to associate with Liberty through a bowl game or otherwise? If not, why do you think Liberty should want to associate with you?
