Just going by UNOmaha's experience: in d2 they played in front of a few hundred- and UNO generally had good teams. Last year UNO averaged 1815. I looked at a couple games this season real quick: UNO had 2100 when they played Denver (that was during school break). They had 2100 this week against South Dakota.

I think more people are interested in watching d1 basketball than d2 basketball. Also, Omaha has a much nicer arena than their old gym. I'm sure that helps.

Did Tarleton State ever make a decision on their invite? Maybe waiting for WAC football to be a thing first instead of waiting as an independent like Dixie?

Augustana is a lock for the Summit but MVFC likely won't take them. Seems ideal for WAC football-only membership, or go independent like Dixie till it happens

Does anyone know if football schools CSU Pueblo and Mesa St are any better?

Colorado would be a good state to have in the WAC and a traveling pair would be ideal.

Its funny. Being a fairly "longtime" poster here (think Scout Boards...03-drunk), like many others, we have seen the "good add" term/status kind of morph a little. Several years ago, a good add was any school we could lasso and rope in. Now, with a few other members on board, I think the WAC can be a little more selective....should they choose. Also, if/as the geographic center changes, that MIGHT change the desire of some schools to bolt (such as maybe UVU, as if a couple of Colorado schools would join in addition to the new DxSU add) But, I know it also depends on the quality of the MBB being produced can affect a school's desire to leave. Currently, the WAC is in a nice spot, overall conference RPI-wise...or NET or whatever it is now [WOW, cant believe where the Summit is right now...27th!]. (We've been fortunate in that GCU, and so far CBU, have brought a good product.)

The WAC now has a geographic core--UVU, DSU, Cal Bapt, GCU, and NMSU. Bringing in schools that compliment that footprint is what the league needs. A second Southern California school and a pair of schools in CO that could be reached by a flight into Denver would be ideal.

Adding Augustana would be a bad decision and I'm not sure going into Texas (aside from WTAMU) fits the geography the league is going for.

Athletics celebrating 20th anniversary as CSUSM readies for new challenges
https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/sd-sp-cal-state-university-san-marcos-anniversary-20190205-story.html

CSUSM = Cal State University San Marcos (CA) (San Diego area)

Pugh (former CSUSM baseball coach) can see Cal State San Marcos taking the same path as UC San Diego and eventually becoming an NCAA Division I program.

They may not be able to join until 2023/24 years. They need to be D2 school for 8 years.

8-year minimum at D2 (2023/24) plus
2-year transition period (2025/26) plus
4-year mandated NCAA reclassification period (2029/30)...

so realistically around 14 years out at the earliest for full D1 membership...that's if CSUSM has an invite from a D1 conference waiting for them to join at the end of the minimum D2 membership requirement..if not then the it'll take longer...

CSUSM to D1 scenario following the UCSD D1 path...(BWC)
(not likely due to the fact that it does not maintain the CSU-to-UC balance in the BWC)
OR
CSUSM to D1 scenario following the CSUB D1 path...(WAC)
(more likely due to the fact that the WAC needs membership for conference stabilization)

RE: New School maybe - Fighting Muskie - 02-06-2019 10:14 PM

This is pretty much crazy talk but the WAC could look for a Texas A&M package deal:

WTAMU
A&M Kingsville
A&M Commerce
A&M Corpus Christi

The WAC gets a second, Texas based core to complement the existing western core:

WAC East:
UMKC, UTRGV, A&M Corpus Christi, A&M Commerce, A&M Kingsville, WTAMU
WAC West:
Seattle, Cal Bapt, UVU, GCU, Dixie St, NMSU

WAC gets stability. The A&M system gets lots of D1 visibility. UTRGV is no longer a flight risk.

Upon further research, Angelo St is also in the A&M system so you could sub them out for Corpus Christi and pick up another football program.

They've already invited Tarleton State so they definitely are interested in Texas D2 football.

I'm also a big fan of St Mary's and St Edwards. One is Baptist other Roman Catholic. No Football though

There is interest in another team (and another Texas team) but is there really interest in a Texas football school?

Tarleton is not under any pressure to move. So I see them following one of three paths-

1. Based on their D1 report, Tarleton wants the Southland. It is a better regional fit and it offers football. The Southland currently has one open slot that they have not filled. Which way does the league want to go?

2. If the Southland outright says NO again, Tarleton seems to have an offer from the WAC. Without football, it is a hard sell. However if they brought a group of Conference mates (WTAMU, TAMU-Commerce) with them, that might make it easier. They may even be able to lure Abilene Christian who is on a western island of the Southland.

Would the WAC be willing to bring 3 D2 Texas Teams? Would those teams be willing to move?

3. Tarleton decides to stay D2 until the next round of shuffling is occurs. D2 is the known commodity. Offers everything they need currently and they can grow their brand locally just by being successful with NCAA playoff berths.

RE: New School maybe - Fighting Muskie - 02-11-2019 09:02 PM

Add the 4 Texas A&M schools and drop Chi St.

You end up with 12 schools and 5 play football.

RE: New School maybe - gleadley - 02-11-2019 11:02 PM

Why won't this thread die? There is still a separate realignment board elsewhere, right?

RE: New School maybe - KingSean - 02-11-2019 11:53 PM

I feel they should combine the realignment and new school thread. Pretty close to the same thing

RE: New School maybe - NMSUPistolPete - 02-12-2019 02:31 AM

The difference is "new school" talk is based off specific information which has D2 programs searching for D1 homes. Or the WAC reaching out to specific D2 programs.

"Realignment" is nothing the WAC is looking into currently if ever. The WAC is not trying to get rid of Chicago State. The WAC is not looking to add four Texas "football playing" D2 schools specifically to form an FCS conference.

If this thread is to exist, it needs to remain as fact based talk based on credible information about D2 schools interested in the WAC or vise versa; not some speculative idea of future realignment contrived in some posters head.

I wouldn't be shocked if it's a combo of options 2 and 3. I think they' could be waiting for WAC FCS to actually be a reality like Dixie State is, but want to stay D2 until then. That very well could be the case with Texas other D2 members as well, and I think the WAC would add 1, maybe 2 more. Depends on how many total TX schools they want (and behind the scenes how likely UTRGV
football is from being a reality in 2020s). Idle in D2/FCS Indy until the football probation period ends and WAC FCS is a reality.

Augustana strikes me as a similar situation, as MVFC is very unlikely to add them off the bat but football needs a home. Join Summit and Indy football till then with numerous Midwest/Big Sky opponents. Can't see them going Pioneer when their "peer" insititutions play for National Championships

RE: New School maybe - SeattleVandals - 02-13-2019 05:40 AM

One of the schools, Dixie State or Metro, said the WAC has the intention of starting FCS football in their feasibility report. The DSU AD has said independence isn't viable long term and they have reached out to Big Sky (obviously rejected) The WAC has confirmed invites to football schools CSU-Mesa, Tarleton State, and Dixie State. As well as Metro State and CS-Los Angeles.

There is no denying the WAC is shotgun-offering invites around the western United States and wants to start FCS football. I don't see how any of this is off topic. Any school looking to move to D1 from the flyover states to Pacific should be looked at as a WAC target. When was the last time a Western/Rockies school moved up without joining the WAC or writing into the student vote it was conditional on joining the Big West?

Quote:In mid-November, The Western Athletic Conference extended invitations to a number of RMAC schools to join their ranks, including the Mavericks.

Quote:The WAC has confirmed to Collegiate
Consulting it is initiating a study in the Fall 2018 to explore the options
and opportunities of starting a FCS football conference.
- DSU feasibility study. They proceed to move up after recommendation they only do so with WAC making efforts to add football

I'm not sure it was released, but page 41 has it on there. No indication on if/when a decision was made, but it is specifically for the WAC. CSLA is s school I've long wanted in the conference

RE: New School maybe - MidWestMidMajor - 02-14-2019 08:03 AM

This paragraph caught my eye on p. 41:

"Collegiate Consulting researched several institutions that have transitioned from Division II to Division I. Florida Gulf Coast University has seen the largest increase in enrollment, growing by more than 5,000 students in five years. FGCU has also seen the largest increase in endowment: more than $34 million. The University of North Florida and University of South Carolina Upstate have also seen substantial endowment increases: 64% and 63% respectively."

There it is- The Holy Grail for school administration: more students (= more tuition $) & more endowment $.

RE: New School maybe - KingSean - 02-14-2019 08:38 AM

Makes sense then on why i couldn't find it but I hope cal state la joins. Also I love how West Georgia did a study yet wont go D1
