Austin Riddle with a best of 63.66 meters (208' 10"), finished in unlucky 13th place, and misses on a trip to Eugene by 6 inches.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-24-2018 06:54 PM

Austin finished in 14th place - and 5 of the 12 qualifiers had lifetime best performances.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-24-2018 08:03 PM

Matthew Murray ran 3:58.00 in the 1500 prelims and did not advance (he was 35th overall).

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-24-2018 11:06 PM

In the long jump, Michelle Fokam fouled on her 1st attempt. She has just 2 more. Right now, 12th place is 5.94 meters (19' 6").

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-24-2018 11:18 PM

5.84 (19' 2") on the 2nd attempt - for 20th place. 12th place is now 5.96 (19' 6¾"). Only one more attempt.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-24-2018 11:28 PM

She fouls on the 3rd attempt. Total choke to foul on 2 attempts when you know that you only have 3 tries. You must get a "safety" jump on the 1st attempt, so as to reduce pressure.

All in all, a horrible first day, when not one of the 4 Rice athletes had a season best in the most important individual event of the year.

Let's hope for better results in the upcoming days.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-25-2018 03:57 PM

In the discus competition, Austin Riddle is in 23rd place with a best of 49.90 meters (163' 8"). He has one more throw - right now, 12th place is 51.28 meters (168' 3").

EDIT: I misread the results. Austin had a foul on his first attempt. He's done. All in all, a great career for this Owl.

In tonight's Women's 200, Hannah Jackson is in the toughest of the 6 sections. Only the top 3 from each section will automatically advance to Saturday, with the next 6 fastest times from all of the sections.

Hannah has just the 3rd fastest time in her section, but she drew a great lane assignment - lane 7!

Tonight's 200s begin at 9:55 p.m. CDT.

Saturday's 200 quarterfinals (to determine the 12 to go to Eugene) are at 9:50 p.m. CDT.

The lane assignments for the first round are randomly chosen. For the next round, the assignments are determined by the times run in the first round. In Sacramento, the preferred lanes, in order, are 4,5,3,6,2,7,1,8. The reason I liked 7 for Hannah is that I think running "blind" will be good for her.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-25-2018 04:29 PM

Explanation: the reason why "preferred lanes" vary from track to track is because some tracks have long straightaways, while others have longer curves. I know it's strange, but, while tracks have uniform length, they differ in shape. For those of you old enough to remember the track that used to be in Memorial Stadium in Austin - those were LONG straightaways!

Care to explain?
I've always assumed that the outer lanes might be desirable simply because of the less acute turn...

In terms of this particular track, lane 7 is the 3rd worst lane. I just think that, seeing only one runner in front of her through the curve will be good for focus. This is just my personal opinion, and is probably worth nothing.

In general terms, the longer the straightaway (thus, the tighter the curve), tilts the advantage toward the outside lanes (because the curve is not as tight). The East Regional is being held at USF, and their preferred lanes for the 200 are 5,6,4,7,3,8,2,1. Obviously, that track has a different configuration than the one at Sacramento State.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - dragon2owl - 05-25-2018 10:00 PM

Hannah was 2nd in her heat with a 23.34. She will advance.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-25-2018 10:29 PM

Hannah finished with the 13th fastest time of the 24 who advanced.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-26-2018 04:54 PM

Eric Maher has finished the javelin with a best of 59.52 meters (195' 3"). Right now, he is in 28th place, but that should drop as the remaining competitors finish the final section.

Charlie Card-Childers also is done, with a best of 58.69 meters (192' 6"), placing him, for now, in 32nd place. Neither had a season best throw.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-26-2018 04:59 PM

Remaining Owls:

6:30 p.m. CDT

Men's Shot Put - Uche Ugwunze (85)

Women's Triple Jump - Michelle Fokam (10)

9:50 p.m. CDT

Women's 200 Meters - Hannah Jackson (31)

Note: the numbers in parentheses represent the NCAA rank this season (not just the West region)

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-26-2018 05:05 PM

Hannah will be in the 1st of 3 sections, in a good lane (6).

The top 3 finishers in each section automatically advance to Eugene, along with the next 3 fastest times from all sections.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-26-2018 06:49 PM

Incredible. Ugwunze with fouls on his first 2 attempts. There are only 3 attempts - I just don't understand this.

17.47 meters (57' 3¾") on his one throw. That moves him into the top 10 in this first section, but all of the top shot put athletes are in the second of 2 sections.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-26-2018 07:01 PM

Ugwunze finished the first section in 12th place (out of 24). After the section that follows, I suspect he will end up around 34th overall. A great career for Uche, as he and Austin Riddle will be missed.

RE: Track & Field @ NCAA West Prelims - WRCisforgotten79 - 05-26-2018 07:06 PM

The women's Triple Jump has 4 sections of 12 jumpers, with each succeeding section having better competitors. I'm guessing that it will take about 13.20 (43' 3¾") to make the top 12. Right now, section 2 is underway. Michelle Fokam is in the final one, section 4.
