2018-2019 Starting 5 - EricSigEpTNBeta183 - 04-16-2018 08:59 PM

I dunno if this has been discussed yet but what would everyones starting 5 be?

For me . . .

Harris/Martin/Jones/Maruice/Parks

or

Lomax/Martin/Jones/Maurice/Parks

I like Davenport and Thorton off the bench. Lomax and Harris to me are interchangeable however i'd rather have the shooter out there.

What, you don't have one of the "shocking" recruits, possibly both, in your starting lineup?

RE: 2018-2019 Starting 5 - macgar32 - 04-16-2018 09:10 PM

If Thorton gains confidence in his shot he should start along with Davenport...

The only guy who may need to improve in order to get good minutes may be Brewton because Tyler seems to be a better shooter and ball handler.

I don't know at this point but DANG is it nice to know you have so many options.

RE: 2018-2019 Starting 5 - Sundanceuiuc - 04-16-2018 09:11 PM

I am not 100% sure we start with Martin healthy, his injury might take a bit I fear, but let's assume he does.

I see the depth chart:

PG: Martin* / Harris ** / Lomax **
SG: Brewton / Hardaway Jr. **
SF: Jones ** / Thorton
PF: Davenport / Maurice **
C: Parks / Enoh / Azab*

* = Injury / Illness concern
** = New Player this year

With a lot of talent on the guards, I'd assume we're going to go small a lot, call it 2 PGs?

In practice, I see it looking like:

PG1: Harris / Lomax
PG2 (Bigger one): Martin / Brewton / Hardaway*
SG/SF: Jones / Thorton
F: Davenport / Maurice
C: Parks / Enoh* / Azab*

no star = Rotation Player
* = Spot Player

One scholarship to use. Grad transfer?

Someone told Jason Smith that Antwann Jones will be the best player on the floor, that he was no too far ago named the #1 SG in the nation before he hurt his hand. We shall see

Parrish said it.

He looked incredible in a SLAM magazine video on twitter.

Much better than the other stuff I have seen.

Blocks, threes, transition, mid range, finger rolls.

One thing stands out, he doesn't seem to like to dunk the ball.

I am gonna youtube him right now and see what I can find.

RE: 2018-2019 Starting 5 - jamammy - 04-16-2018 09:37 PM

About the dunks ...

RE: 2018-2019 Starting 5 - memtigbb - 04-16-2018 09:40 PM

They called CDR "buckets". No doubt he had some nice dunks over the years he was here, dunks isn't what gave him the nickname "buckets". The guy could put the ball in the hole. 2 points is 2 points no matter how it gets in there.

RE: 2018-2019 Starting 5 - lemmingleap - 04-16-2018 09:44 PM

I got Lomax, Martin, Jones, Davenport, Maurice.

Most athletic guys at their positions, Penny wants to press and run. Lomax with the nod over Harris just because he's a pure point and knows Penny's system. Harris instant offense off the bench and will play as much as Lomax, each about 20 minutes (Joe Jackson got 22 his freshman year).

We can go 10 deep easy, kinda like Hubie Brown did with the Grizzlies, where even Pau was only getting like 27 minutes. Everybody's fresh and frenetic.

A lot of 3 guard lineups to get Brewton some minutes.

Thornton as a small ball 4 to get him some more minutes than just backing up Jones at the 3.

Parks and Maurice splitting time about evenly, with Maurice playing some 4 too.

Jayden should redshirt, have 5 years with dad and just develop this year.

Enoh may look at all this and want to transfer, kinda undersized and limited to the 5.

Azab just needs to get well.

For the 1 scholly remaining a transfer who's gotta sit out this year would make sense, we're already at a minutes crunch with all this talent.

Lomax
Martin
Jones
Davenport

I would rather have my more experienced guys starting to start the season, such as Davenport and Thornton, for multiple reasons. One, they know what to do in big games because they have been in a few now. Second, it rewards them for staying through the coaching change. Lastly, there is no reason they cant be removed later if they do not perform well or get outworked at practice. Let the newcomers take their starting spots by working hard in practice.

Ain’t no way in hell anyone beats Lomax out at point barring a late transfers who is damn good. Harris, Martin, Jones get all the minutes at the 2 and 3. Davenport, Maurice split time at the 4 with Martin there occasionally when playing small ball. His wing span justifies him playing the 4 a bit. and Mike splits with Mauricen at the 5.

If Martin is playing the 4 something has gone terribly wrong.

I could see this lineup and a nice 2nd wave that includes Harris, Brewton, Maurice and Thornton. I would expect Jones to start over Thornton, but I guess we’ll see.

Given the current makeup, I'd expect a rotation of:

Lomax/Martin/Jones/Davenport/Parks
Harris (at 1 &2)/Brewton/Thornton/Maurice/Enoh

And what a rotation that is to start the Penny era.

Yes, Enoh too. I hope he continues to develop. Seems like he has potential.
