Former Jag Starting QB Dallas Davis is transferring out - kevinwmsn - 04-13-2018 08:21 AM

Dallas started most games in 2016 and started a good number of games last season despite being banged up most the past few years. He was still in the running with redshirt freshman Cephus Johnson to be the starting qb for next season. I think this is first time in the past 2 years Dallas has been healthy. Not sure about the timing of it all right before Spring game and near end of spring practice.

I wouldn’t read to much into it at this point. That type of stuff happens when you have coaching changes.

Hm. I feel like Davis would've done pretty well in Edenfield's offense too. What QB's are left besides Johnson?

We still have Cole Garvin, who started as many games as Davis last year. He is a little more talented than Davis, but wasn’t nearly as consistent. We also have a true freshman who I wouldn’t expect to get meaningful playing time and UAB transfer Evan Orth. Im personally hoping Cephus Johnson is the guy.

Agree. Dallas struggled early in spring practice, but was just starting to put it all together. He may have just been a little too late to keep the starting job.

I wish him well. When he was on, he could really do some great things. And to be fair, Jones' lack of any offensive capabilities required him to improvise a lot.

Our offensive line held him back. He could sling it when he had time. Unfortunate we never gave him a decent O-line to work with

I'm hoping Johnson is the guy or will at least get some meaningful snaps heading into 2019 season. I think Orth played a snap or 2 last season and had a big gain on the ground, I forgot if Davis or Garvin was out and the other got hurt for a play. Dallas did have some moments, I just don't think the line helped him or running game enough week in and week out.

Maybe not. It’s sometimes hard to put the ball in a redshirt freshman’s hands, but below are the stats from our spring game today (held at 9AM due to the weather).

Passing:
Cephus Johnson 9-of-12 (75%), 126 yds, 2 TDs;
Cole Garvin 3-of-8 (37.5%), 98 yds, TD;
Evan Orth 8-of-13 (61.5%), 72 yds

Maybe the redshirt freshman is the better option? Time will tell. We know Garvin can play and lead us to big wins (#19 SDSU was one). But we will see what happens this summer.

I think he was referring to the fact that Garvin may be looking to transfer. I could be wrong though.

I actually do know his mother. He’s not transferring. At least not to my knowledge

Gotcha. I actually expected him to leave last year and was happy he decided to stay. He ignored post-game interview requests today which is not normal for him. It wouldn’t be the first time he left because he wasn’t happy at a school (not saying he isn’t happy now...that i know of).

Regardless, I see Cephus Johnson getting the nod. He looked solid this morning.

Was it Davis that was the Jags QB when we played you guys in Ruston last fall? I was pretty impressed by whoever that guy was. I remember thinking that I was glad his O-line wasn’t protecting him at all. Otherwise, he’d have given us fits.

That was Garvin.

Well, just based on that one game, I think Garvin is a pretty good QB. I imagine I'll get another look at him this September.

Garvin has impressed me at times and I was hoping he'd break away and take the starting job. He was a fairly high rated player coming out of high school and has some talent. I'm all for playing the best player and there is the occasional phenom but I'm not keen on having a true freshman at QB unless he's from Hawaii.
