ESPN, Ivy League sign 10-year deal, mostly ESPN + - quo vadis - 04-04-2018 02:51 PM

The Ivy League and ESPN have signed a 10-year deal designed to leverage the new ESPN+ platform, although at least 6 Ivy League football games will be broadcast on ESPN cable channels.

But, *every* Ivy League controlled football and basketball game will be available on ESPN+. The deal promises at least 1100 (yes, that many) IL events will be on ESPN+ each year.

Ivy League already had a Roku channel and subscription service. I would imagine all that content is migrating over to the ESPN Plus Platform.

Like the MLS service, if you were a subscriber of the Ivy League service previously you will be saving money and getting more content.

Johns Hopkins to the Ivy League now for more content. Also, I think the Ivy League should offer army and navy without football

Was it NBC/Comcast who had them before ESPN, or was it Fox?

I remember watching Harvard-Yale and UPenn games...can't remember where.

If it was NBC/Comcast, yikes...why are they not getting into this game?

I wonder why they do not mention how much the deal is worth?

No release EVER mentions the dollar amount because ESPN puts a clause in the contract saying it is not be released.

What happens is eventually a university president or AD becomes "a source close to the conference" and spills the beans.

I thought it was Eleven Sports. I might be wrong on that though.

Is NBC positioning itself for a major play for AAC?

Nah. Clearly the nature documentaries with the lady from the Today Show, local Christian programming, children's daytime television, and soap operas are much more valuable than college athletics.

I think they are. That said, if I remember correctly, NBC recently signed some sort of Indy racing series that will eat up at least some Saturday time slots—so they are probably hedging thier bet.

My feeling is NBC will end up splitting the AAC rights with ESPN. Such a split frankly makes a lot of sense for both parties. Neither needs all the AAC inventory and both would end up paying less for half the conference than they would for all of it. It also gives the AAC a lot of exposure.

ESPN must have outbid them, that and the Ivy League will have more capability to view games on ESPN+. There linear games will take a hit as they will be on the U most likely.

Interesting tidbit from this article. Some Ivy League content will be on ESPN3 not ESPN +

Looks to me like ESPN3 could be used as a free game of the week type platform

RE: ESPN, Ivy League sign 10-year deal, mostly ESPN + - Fighting Muskie - 04-04-2018 08:48 PM

Ivy League grads can probably afford to pay for the content and ESPN probably paid very little for it since the Ivy was looking for access and with their endowments what they are they don't need the money.

A win for everyone.

Well, if they are the Entire Sports Programming Network, and somehow have more shows than actual sports... 05-stirthepot

This was the current Ivy League football exposure for 2017 via NBC. Apparently ESPN already had Ivy League basketball.
