2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread - B_Hawk06 - 03-05-2018 10:50 PM

In efforts to keep our recruits pinned thread about recruits, let’s discuss the way too early 2018-2019 theories here.

Starting lineups?

PG scares me. We can fill all the other spots, IMO.

PG - Scary (considering what we lose in Talley)
SG - Taylor
SG/SF - Fornes
PF - Cylla
PF/C - THE Devontae Cacok

Honestly think Toews could fill the PG position even though he will be a freshmen. I think a PG JUCO transfer would be a phenomenal pick up for this team, but who knows really

Toews is legit. He ran PG for one of the top prep programs in the country. His ability to distribute the ball is special and excites me in regards to the caliber of player McGrath plans to bring into this program. I also know that Cylla prefers to play the 3 over the 4, but I honestly don't think his preference will matter too much because I'm sure the coaching staff imagines an offense with a stretch 4 to allow more opportunities for Cacok to work 1 on 1 in the post. TBH the only player that deserves his starting position without a competition is Cacok, let us not forget we were 11-21 this year. The transition year is over for McGrath, no excuses going forward... With that being said here is my "way too early" starting 5.

Toews
Taylor/Fornes
Fornes/Cylla
Cylla/Elmore
Cacok

Unless we bring in some amazing JUCO/Grad transfers, i'm not optimistic about next year, so i'll wait and see what we get.

Concerning next year, heard the announcer last night say we would play Carolina next year in Chapel Hill and they would come to Trask the following season. Good for the program to get a P5 in here. With Elmore back and Cylla elligable, we should be able to shore up the inside a bunch. Many combinations with next year's team. Doesn't really matter who the starters are. We'll be much deeper and hopefully much better.

Does anyone know if Elmore was redshirted this season or plans on applying for it?

Yeah, I haven't seen anything official either, but he didn't play at all this year. I can't imagine a scenario where he wouldn't be granted a medical redshirt.

That's a great thing. Sucks if that schedule plays out though, that we couldn't get them in Trask while we have Cacok. I imagine that's for good reason on Carolina's end.

of course it is. There is history here. They refused to play us while Blizzard was here, year he left, we played them in MB.

Yes, he was a medical redshirt.

UNCW was a better team than Carolina when Blizzard was a junior and senior. I shouldn't be surprised with Hoops, but I am. A lot of people said that they'd "believe it when they see it" that Carolina would come to Trask. Now, McGrath has indicated it's going to happen and you're still finding ways to "call out" Carolina. This is a good thing and it will help the program financially (it will be a money game next year, and we'll see a rise in season ticket sales when they come to town). It will also be McGrath's third season as head coach, so hopefully we're fielding a solid team even without Cacok.

Now, hopefully Keatts schedules us too.

It's absolutely positive to play UNC, Was not trying to insinuate that it wasn't. Even someone that knows very little about college hoops would see that. My only concern is Trask getting filled with powder blue, but money is money and we certainly need it.
I completely agree with you that UNCW was better Blizzards last two years, and was entirely the reason they wanted no part of us. This type of behavior isn't isolated to UNC, but we were talking about UNC coming, no?

Given the way Keatts exited, I'd be shocked if they scheduled us.

Fair enough. Just seems odd to complain about the timing of when they're coming when getting a P5 school to Trask has been such a hard thing to accomplish at all.

Thinking of McGrath's connections, I'd still like to explore a series with Stanford as well.

I was the first to mention the timing, but wasn't doing it in a complaining way -- just that it's not surprising that a P5 would avoid playing us with our star players or loaded teams. I think I remember Louisville doing the same thing. We played them the first year when we were just figuring things out as a winning team again, but the following year when we were stacked Pitino didn't wan't any part of the possibility of embarrassment. I brought it up as less of a Carolina specific thing, but more concerning the P5s in general. Remember, Carolina had a good look of Cacok earlier this year. Then again, this might all just be insignificant and coincidental.

Those of you who have a problem with Keatts are in a small minority. Keatts would be welcomed back to play here by most everybody. Now, if whatever 08 knows about his exit becomes known, it could very well be a different story.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread - surfsalot - 03-06-2018 07:14 PM

As the title of the thread states, it's way too early for predictions. I have good confidence that this staff can develop players, Bryan is a good example of that. The key for us as fans is to be patient. Someone else on here also stated it doesn't really matter who starts. I somewhat agree with that statement. With a deeper bench, we will have a chance to be better next season.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread - 82hawk - 03-06-2018 07:23 PM

We're going to have to recruit some MEN. Looking at CofC and NU play, and including Towson, we are physically overmatched at our guard positions. It's the main reason I wanted to see us press and play some zone.

Talley was 6'0" tall maybe. Ty Taylor weighs a buck seventy, Gary buck sixty five. The teams we play have 210 - 220 lb guards that we cannot handle defensively. Our current recruits are thin as well.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Starting Line-Up Way Too Early Thread - Seahawk2010 - 03-06-2018 07:36 PM

I like that McGrath is targeting taller guards though. Jaylen Simms is a 6-6 SG, Kai Toews is a 6-4 PG. That will help out our defense.

Height is better than no height, but they will still have a problem handling the size and strength of those beefy guards.
