RE: 2019 Football - hktribefan - 09-10-2019 09:16 PM

I want to say there's some kind of rule that a team has to offer a chance for players to try out? I have no idea why that sticks in my head, but it does. I think it can be something as simple as if there is interest they hold a one hour session with one of the coaches, and that satisfies the rule. I could be way off on that one though.

The all-time student tryout?

As Rene Henry '54 tells in his wonderful book about the fabled Iron Indians of 1953, nothing will ever top the story of John Risjord.

The '53 team was down to 19 men from 24 due to injuries about halfway through the season and W&M's head coach, Jackie Freeman,
heard about a guy in the fraternity league who looked pretty good. He invited Risjord, who was from Kansas and never played football
until PiKA had him on their fraternity squad, to come out to a practice.

Henry relates how Risjord ended up that week being put on the squad and played the rest of the season at end (both offense and defene since
everyone played both ways). Remember, he had never played football before!

Nothing will ever top that.

Some really great pics from the VP/DP. Hope they show up for you...not sure due to the paywall.

I come in peace!

Really looking forward to welcoming William & Mary to Dowdy-Ficklen on Saturday. I can assure you, nobody in Pirate Nation is overlooking or underestimating the Tribe in this one.

ECU doesn't really know what it has right now... through 3 games, we have:

Game 1: We were blown out at NC State. We shot ourselves in the foot early, driving down their throats and fumbling into the end zone on our first drive, which really killed the momentum we had.

Game 2: We beat the daylights out of Gardner-Webb. They are a bad FCS team, from what I've read. They looked outmatched from the start.

Game 3: We were blown out at Navy. We ALWAYS get blown out by Navy... even in years when we have a good team. For whatever reason, we just flat out can't stop the triple option whatsoever.

From what little Pirate fans can gather from our first 3 games is that the biggest question mark is our offense. With W&M having a high-powered offense, this ECU team isn't one that is going to do well playing from behind.

One bright spot so far is the newly unveiled TowneBank Tower at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. It gave our southside a much needed face lift with a new pressbox and suites.

If you're coming down to Greenville for the game, safe travels and here's to a competitive, injury-free game! 04-cheers

Very big welcome to you. We're always happy to have you and your Pirates buddies here, so spread the word.

Our Tribe lucked into this game after VT bailed and it's a great opportunity. I'm hoping we show well, avoid injury, and put 4Qs together for the first time all season. To win, we'll have to continue to dominate the turnover battle, tackle much better than we have, and keep our run game going.

Here's to an injury-free game and great tailgating!

Wouldn’t it be great if the Tribe ditched the Go Go offense for this game, and came out in the triple option???

RE: 2019 Football - tribeintexas - 09-18-2019 11:49 PM

Just wondering if anyone knows what is going on with Jalen Christian. Is he injured?

Any time we play ECU the memory of the 1977 game in the Norfolk Oyster Bowl has to come up. It still, to this day,
defies credulity.

We were trailing ECU very late in the game by less than a touchdown when our quarterback, Tom Rozantz, got free and
was heading for the winning TD when a former ECU coach (who had a sideline pass) suddenly darted out from the sidelines and tackled Rozantz on the ECU two-yardline, preventing the score.

The crowd, the teams were stunned. The refs huddled and declared a William & Mary touchdown, the winning points.

It made every TV that night and every paper the next day.

The 60-year old former ECU coach said afterwards he just couldn't let Rozantz score and sort of lost his mind.
Rozantz, in one of the great all-time quotes, said he couldn't believe a 60-year old man tackled him.

I doubt if we'll see that this Saturday.

Thanks for sharing. Here is a write up about it while discussing the rich history of Forman field. Can you imagine a former head coach and AD running on the field to make a tackle? Crazy.

Thanks for checking in. Lots of teams struggle with the triple option. Getting ready for it once a year doesn't help. Houston should be able to help that going forward because he used to run it at his other stops. Greenville is always a fun atmosphere. Looking forward to it!

Interesting, thanks. According to the article, W&M is 9-2 in Oyster Bowls, currently with a 5-game winning streak.

It's a great video. I like the version without Nick Muse in it...since, you know, he doesn't play here anymore.

They did a nice job on the video. All the serious faces. Has the feel of a trailer for some Hollywood blockbuster. All it needs is the haunting narrator's voice saying "In a world where..."

Nice article. Hollis certainly exudes that Alpha personality. Not really cocky, but someone with extreme confidence in their talents.
