All-time top 20 teams that have never played each other - Wedge - 02-08-2018 12:14 AM

Good off-season article at fbschedules.com – they start with the all-time AP top 20 from the first 80 years of the AP college football poll, and find 12 matchups of those 20 teams that have never occurred.

One of these never-played matchups will happen on September 1st in Atlanta: Washington and Auburn will play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

The other 11 are:

Notre Dame-Auburn
Michigan-LSU
Oklahoma-Michigan State
Texas-Michigan State
Tennessee-Michigan State
Texas-Florida State
LSU-UCLA
Tennessee-Washington
Florida State-Washington
Auburn-UCLA
Georgia-Washington

Hard to believe Michigan State is an all-time top 20 program.

And before looking closely, that last one looked like "George Washington," making me think this was a basketball thread for a second.

That's a pretty cool list. Interesting as well.

I wonder how many of those matchups will happen after the next round of realignment......

Looks like that link has not updated for this past season's results, only including the rankings from 2016. Alabama would now be ahead of Notre Dame for 3rd all-time and getting pretty close to Oklahoma for that number 2 spot thanks to bonus points for each week at number 1 and a 10 point bonus for the national championship.

When first going through the matchups I figured my school must not be in the top 20, but the Aggies are at number 18 and have amazingly played all the other top 20 teams.

By my count, 8 of those top-20 teams have played each of the other 19 teams on the list. Another 4 have played 18 of the other 19, which leaves 8 teams that have "missed" 2 or more of the other top-20 teams.

I'm not knocking Missouri here, but when the Tigers joined the SEC there were only 2 schools that had played them more than 5 times and one of the was A&M and the other was Vanderbilt. Most SEC schools had played Missouri fewer than 4 times. That's why it is taking so long for everyone to get acclimated. A&M had at least been a home and home, or a Cotton Bowl foe over the years and of course they had an old rivalry with L.S.U. and history with Arkansas.
