If you want anyone to begin investing in the area and improving the quality of life for the majority of the residents who play by the rules and want more out of their life, you might want to get this project built and see what grows up around it.

I'd be happy to give you a guided tour of the area around Nationals Park here in DC that was a crime ridden sinkhole 15 years ago and now is a major revenue producer for the city due to the housing growth around the park, and the development of stores that serve the neighborhood.

Dumb@ss

Careful...Sounds like gentrification. 03-wink

One does not have to go to DC to see how neighborhoods can be resurrected by massive public investment. Just look at the pictures JAY posted about how the area looked before UAB was built and what it looks like today. It will be good for the Norwood / Carraway area to have a new stadium (MPF or BJCC) and either will be good for UAB football.

Such resurrection is what I have in mind when I suggest a UAB "West Campus" on the park land after Legion Field is removed. As with the building of UAB on the southside, such investment in the west will offer the same pay back over years as LINUS sees in DC as UAB expands to become the comprehensive national university it can be. Yes, I am guilty of dreaming big dreams for my city and its University. I agree with Joe Volker on that concept. .

I'm not really even comfortable with that. If UAB is going to be a "tenant," and not an "owner," then the school shouldn't be putting up funds for building it. The school will be putting up funds by paying to use it.

I wouldn't be opposed to UAB putting up funds on the front end... IF we signed a contract that says we don't ever have to pay to use the place, and we control concessions for our events, and other such guarantees. In essence, have some ownership-type control over the operation.

At the very least, I hope our lease gets us priority on scheduling.

UAB isn't putting up funds for building it, that has been specifically forbidden by The Brain Trust at Sid McDonald Hall in Tuscaloosa

If you insist on such "ownership" prerogatives, then you need to hold out for the OCS instead of the BJCC stadium. UAB will be investing in a facility it does not have to provide from its limited campus space and funds to build, maintain or staff. As when you lease a luxury car, you pay thousands down and then pay hundreds per month for years, pay for upkeep but never own it. UAB should negotiate the best deal it can get, but right now it does not want to build its own.
