In 2005, I entered the board like a complete ******* and boasted about the title. Several people called me out with realistic complaints and I apologized. Since then, I haven't started a single conversation about UNC. I've responded when others have brought stuff up, but I haven't initiated UNC discussion, and that has been intentional.

Fair enough. I'll let this die, but know if it gets brought up i'll respond :)

Serious question Bricks, does it not drive you bat $hit crazy when another team goes on a 19-0 run and Roy just stands there with his hands in his pocket refusing to call a timeout?

No, it really doesn't. His track record speaks for itself. Roy is coaching for March. He plays his bench, and he lets his players figure things out. Carolina ended the first half 7-0 run and came out of a 15 minute break before going on a 15-7 run. Are there times when he's stubborn? Yes! But I think Roy's coaching is vastly underrated.

I agree. ESPECIALLY when you look at the recruiting done at Duke. Duke is pulling down top 1-3 recruiting classes nearly every year. Coach K is stepping on the court with NBA ready freshman regularly, classes that our touted as "best ever" by talking heads all the time. Then what happens, Carolina (while not playing with mid-major recruited talent, obviously) steps in with a lower recruitment ranking, competes, wins, and wins national championships. Roy may not have his teams ranked in the top 5 every year, but his teams learn and gel together over multiple seasons usually (not nearly as many one and dones as Duke, Kentucky, etc) and then put it together for championship runs. That to me, is better coaching then just going out there because of your fame and NBA contact grabbing the highest touted players, only having them for a year... and flopping with that talent more often than not.

One and Done talent doesn't always add up to championship ball. I'd argue K was a better coach when he didn't have a bunch of 1 and dones. K's teams were always fundamentally sound defensively. The last several years it's been horrid. Roy does a tremendous job at developing talent, that can't be denied. Many times these one and dones, while uber talented, don't want to listen because they don't really have too. and we all know the AAU circuit is garbage ball.

Bricks- I guess you just get immune to it. I asked the same question to a parent of a kid i coach that is a UNC guy(about an hour after i sent this) and that was his exact answer. It's easy to say it didn't matter because they won, but i just don't get it. You can't take them with you! I'm glad C.B figured out after a few games how important it is to call them at the mid major level. I was losing my mind at the game i was at where Campbell went on a 17-2 run without one, but the next few games he started using them wisely.

On the one hand, I've read statistics that suggest timeouts don't successfully stop runs/droughts. Conversely, there's conventional wisdom...I get it. If Roy were sitting here with zero titles, it may bother me. But, he didn't call a timeout in the 2008 Final Four when KU jumped out to a 28 point lead. He's not changing his philosophy at this point of his career, and he'd tell you he got it from Dean. Roy doesn't manipulate the last 4 minutes of a game like Dean could; they're both successful, so I think, yeah, most just accept it.

I get it. Belichick has made many moves that leave the fans scratching their heads but you just can't argue with the success so you live with it.

Will the Big East take Syracuse back? 35-34 in the league the past four years, and they're heading for double-digit league losses this year.

I wish they would, they could head to the #1 conference in the nation COGS I miss the Big East Days. It feels to me like Jimmy has given up. I remember when no one beat them in the dome, and two weeks in a row to UNC and State. Since us UNCW fans should accept moral victories now, should i accept that such a terrible Cuse team took UNC to the wire? and it took a career night from Pinson for them to beat them? haha

Good call. With their glory days behind them, maybe the American Athletic conference is a better long-term fit. If .500 is the best they can do in today's ACC, they're looking like the WFU of the Big East.

It's hard to twist this into a moral victory after claiming that this Carolina team sucks for the past two months though, no? And, there are totally parallels between Boeheim and McGrath's career. Thanks for drawing that out.

Not sure where i compared a grizzled veteran coach, to CB. One things for sure with both Cuse and UNC, neither of them are winning jack. So, enjoy your February win.

RE: Face-off - Seahawkhoops - 02-22-2018 10:42 AM

And to think that Cuse started to go downhill after they were penalized for FAR less than what UNC did. interesting to see that correlation.

And, don't sell Cuse short. They have a shot at an NIT title. New York's team playing in MSG...it's perfect.

Cuse's mediocrity stinks. They are essentially in the Matt Doherty era, but they didn't change a coach! The last few years UNCW gave me a distraction, But, we all know where that's at now.

I completely stepped back from my full court press there. I felt like he learned from some of his mistakes and made a few adjustments. That said, I'm not happy with 9-19 and that would be consistent no matter where our coach came from! Anytime i'm slightly critical you immediately say "oh you don't like him because he's a carolina guy". At a certain point things are what they are and we ARE 9-19.... correction 9-20

Bricks- I will say this, while i thought they were over rated early in the season, they are certainly gelling at the right time...... again. As bad as they played last night for much of the game it still took a miracle shot to beat them

They have gelled. I still think Elite 8 is their ceiling. Too many minutes for Berry and Maye...I just don't think their legs are going to be there in March, and they don't have the post presence Roy relies on when shots aren't falling and the game slows down.

They played awful last night. They were all very emotional; Roy was choked up when he walked out of the tunnel, plus they've struggled against Larranaga. I had a feeling it was going to be a long night. Joel Berry is a competitor that I believe everyone can respect. Not the most athletic, not the tallest or fastest, but strong, smart and a winner.

I can see them being a 3 seed that loses in the S16.

Joey Brackets had them as a 3 in the region with Michigan State and Kansas.

I obviously don't follow them close, but, in my recollection, this is the best 3 point shooting team i can remember for UNC in quite some time.
