Yes Mullet Jr., because she's been a HC before and was successful there as well. RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - Proff - 12-19-2017 12:04 PM mullet jr - I was beginning to think that myself. Oddly he's been more positive. For the record, i don't think it should matter if they were a HC or not. If one sample size is too small to judge in one case, it's too small in the other as well. Can't have it both ways RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - SEA33HAWK - 12-19-2017 02:30 PM I think it has more to do with positive support for a good start with the women's program. I do expect more. Because we have three previously successful head coaches on this staff. It works up to me as a winning formula. Now it just needs to reflect that on the court. We're drawing from a large sample of HC experience from Coach Barefoot. McGrath had zero HC experience from which to draw from. The Wes Miller discussion is relevant here. His first 4 years at the HC level were lousy. His 5th year? Stellar. So of course it matters if he/she was a HC or not previously. Keatts coming in and having great success right away as a HC was an aberration, not the rule. Now, can we NOT turn the lone Women's thread into a Men's thread please? The Beat and the Beard actually discussed that in their last podcast. Mike (I think it was Mike) mentioned that perhaps Keatts' experience as a HC at Hargrave Military Academy (Prep School) gave him something to build on there and at the least afforded himself an experience in a HC position prior to taking the reigns at UNCW. Degraaf had a nice game and I like Raque as a complimentary player as well. I really liked Riley's article on Suggs; great to see hard work and perseverance rewarded. RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - ml1323 - 01-03-2018 08:17 AM After a competitive game at Elon, who was picked second, they had a disappointing performance to open home CAA play against W&M. I think they are doing well, considering they still have a lot of pieces to fill. Looks to me, with three staff members with successful head coaching experience, the best is yet to come. RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - Seahawk Nation 08 - 01-12-2018 09:53 PM The Ladies dropped a close one tonight on the road, 72-71 to Towson. This despite Madison Raque's 29 points on 10-19 shooting (6-12 from 3) and Lacey Suggs adding 21 points. We fall to 0-5 in league play. Our next shot at getting Coach Barefoot her first CAA win will be @ Drexel on Sunday afternoon. RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - Seahawk Nation 08 - 01-19-2018 09:44 PM The ladies got blown out at home by Delaware tonight, 82-49. The Seahawks fall to 0-7 in league play. It doesn't get any easier on Sunday, as JMU, 6-0 in the league and # 86 in the RPI, comes to town. They seem to have the opposite problem of the Men's team. they played much better out of conference. Our non-conference schedule wasn't particularly challenging. Which was kind of a good thing; this program needed to build some confidence. But our BEST win was a home victory over ECU....current RPI # 250. 3 of our other 4 wins came against teams outside the Top 300. Then, you enter league play, against the # 10 league in the country (last year - # 8), and bam.....wakeup call comes. We did play Towson close on the road (72-71 L). In fact, our first 5 CAA losses were each by single digits. But we just can't seem to get over the hump yet. I think we do have a team capable of winning some league games this year, but the last 6 years of this program struggling prior to Coach Barefoot's arrival really put us behind the other teams in this league. It'll take some time before we can expect to be a legitimate contender. RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - B_Hawk06 - 01-21-2018 10:08 AM I'm gonna trust that this is the growing pains of Barefoot's first season at the helm of what hasn't been a very good women's program. Hopefully she'll be able to build on that OOC success, the adversity from conference play this year, and we'll start seeing results next year. Barefoot is a solid coach. She deserves time to mold this program. I think she will be fine RE: 2017-18 Women's Basketball Thread - Seahawk Nation 08 - 01-21-2018 04:38 PM 0-8 after a home loss to JMU. Ugh. We definitely will have our chances to win some league games this year, however. 2 games against Charleston, and a home game against Towson should yield a win or even 2 or 3. And there should be a surprise win or 2 somewhere down the line. Madison Raque and Lacey Suggs are struggling in particular lately, but if they can get their confidence back, that'll be huge. |
