Given NC Wesleyan's shot count last year (66.6 per game compared to 63.7 for us last season), the Battling Bishops' pace of play seems to be quite fast, which will help us tune up our defensive efficiency as well as offensive play in transition, where UNC has always made their mark under C.B. McGrath's former boss, Roy Williams.

The D-III, non-scholarship NC Wesleyan squad has seen some historical success at their level under coach John Thompson, with last year being a bit of an anomaly. In '15-16, the Battling Bishops went 20-7 and 12-2 in their conference, leading to a USA South Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award for Thompson. With all 5 starters returning from last year, including All-Conference First Teamer Adrian Moore, a bounceback season seems likely.

After facing the Seahawks, NC Wesleyan takes on UNCG in another exhibition on November 15th, and also has D-I regular season contests scheduled with CAA mate Delaware and Longwood later in the month.

Note that while NC Wesleyan lists this game as an Exhibition on their schedule, it will be considered a regular season game for us.

What's up with that?

Does it really matter? It wont count officially anyhow so whether it is called an exhibition or an actual game, it doesn't matter. I know Drexel has these games too (Arcadia this season) but I wish all of our schools would stop scheduling games that have zero benefit. Playing lower division teams does nothing to excite a fan base or even give the players real game experience, it is merely players going through the motion (win or loss)

Ohhhhhh, but if we were to lose and IF it was one of those seasons where we are a bubble team it would absolutely "unofficially" be counted against us.

Also, that same "lower level schools" mentality you're displaying is what causes P5s to stay away from good Mids. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Which one would you prefer? I would prefer a mix, where we can play DII's/DIII's and P5's. Also, McGrath was in a pinch trying to get this year's schedule in place when he was hired last spring.

I hate this trend toward scheduling Non-DI schools also (with the obvious exception of Claflin), but isn't this game part of the Savannah Tournament deal?

Somehow it is. Valpo, Loyola and Kent St each get to host 2 of the 3 D1 team's in the "visitors bracket" (Samford, Mississippi Valley St, and SE Louisiana) while we get to host 1 Non D1 team. So don't quite understand that one.

NC Wesleyan’s nickname is the Battling Bishops. There is a high school in the Charleston area, Bishop England that has the same nickname.

Nicknames for some schools with a religious affiliation are funny. guilford, near Greensboro, is a Quaker school. It was known as the "Fighting Quakers". Not a necessarily suitable name for a group of pacifists.

Never heard of Guilford as the Fighting Quakers but I know that Elon was called the Fighting Christians for years. Guilford has always just been the Quakers unless they changed it. Fighting Christians seems ok to me !
On another note,AJ Frye plays for Wesleyan and went to Hoggard. Great kid who was I think cut as a freshman and worked his butt off to get better. 6-5 inside man that can shoot it.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 07:26 PM

Hawks starters looked good. Reserves are in there now and started off a bit tight. Gary with a nice finish and Kalina scored down low. Hope to see Estime and Gary get hot.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 07:53 PM

Gary played well, he's good. Talley played well and Cacok is Cacok. I just hope that he doesn't get hurt. This is a pretty good team if nobody else gets hurt. It would be good to have Richmond and Elmore back.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 08:10 PM

Fornes quietly scoring well.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 08:26 PM

Nick Powell playing well. He can help this team. Kalina looking more confident now. Estime has had some good moments. Reserves more than holding their own.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 08:36 PM

Hawks playing sloppy now, lost focus with the big lead. It's about time to just put in the reserves for the rest of the game because this game has been over for a while. Hawks up 94 to 68.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 08:52 PM

It was fun getting to watch Nick Powell and get to look at Eteroma. He hustled out there. Hawks win and now move on to Davidson who was very good in their first game.

RE: Saturday (11/11) Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan - billthebighawksfan - 11-11-2017 09:08 PM

Talley was very good tonight as was Cacok. That's a good combination.

Kalina looked very slow on defense, albeit against very undersized competition. Looks like Devontae won't be coming off the floor much, and will switch between the 4 and 5 depending on if Kalina is in. The two freshman, Gary and Estime, looked good but were making freshman mistakes and turned the ball over. Overall I'm feeling optimistic and this team has a bit of flair with finishing around the basket
