Early QB Rumors/Rumbling - WMSportsBlog - 04-02-2017 12:38 PM

Though it's entirely too early to anoint anyone as the starter, it's always fun to analyze each and every little detail that we can find, including DeVonte Dedmon's most recent interview 05-stirthepot

Check out that interview here, and a brief preview of all of the QBs on the roster (hint, there's a ton). Who do you think is the best choice for the Tribe?...Or do you believe it's far too early to tell? More interestingly, whom would you LIKE to see as the starter?

Roll Tribe Roll.

Just my two cents.....you don't bring Mitchell in to sit for three years behind Rotger assuming he's as good as advertised. That tells me that Rotger will have a tough time getting the start unless he really emerges. I have no reason to believe that McKee is the answer. He played on a run first Cox team where he was a big running threat and didn't pass much. I think McKee was the best option as a back up last year and he was with the program for three season which doesn't say much other than he knew the offense. Battle is interesting based on his high school performance, but he couldn't pass McKee on the depth chart.

That leaves me to the conclusion that Mitchell will be our starter.

Right -- all plausible deductions. Whatever happens in the end, we expect several transfers to occur at that position (and likely all at the same time), especially with 3 redshirt freshmen and a sophomore.

No OC here to be on board with early QB returns. Unless Jimmye will have the final say, it starts all over in pre-fall practice. No time for a new OC to put in a new offense. Not feeling good about the time it is taking to fill the spot.

Nobody is going to put in a new offense before the fall season. This isn't the NFL where everyone practices year round. The offense we've been using under Laycock is going to be the same regardless. The new OC may have some wrinkles or play calling ideas, but not a new offense.

I pick Mitchell as my starter. I'll be disappointed otherwise

Good points on the OC all around. Am definitely surprised the spot hasn't yet been filled, but also agree that given the time constraints, we'll have to run (more or less) the same system as last year. Any potential candidates for promoting from within? ...And is there any reason Jimmye couldn't call plays?

McKee and Rotger were Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year. It would be silly to figure either out of the running. Besides, I'm willing to bet anyone on this board that we'll see more than one starter this season.

As I said in another post. Mitchell is having a good spring, so is Rotger. McKee is being given every opportunity to prove himself. Battle still is in the mix, but behind the three already mentioned.

Mitchell has all of the traits to be a real good QB and is making a case for himself every practice. Rotger has worked hard to prepare himself, a good student of the offense. McKee continues to improve. Battle could get lost in this competition. The arm is there, very strong. Needs to relax and just throw. Try's too hard sometimes and the accuracy suffers.

All of these guys are good guys, represent the program well. I'd be recruiting a solid QB to redshirt 2018 and another in 2019. Minus injury, we could possibly be looking at a 4 year starter.

Burdick has been switched to Wr so that leaves us 5 Qbs. Also, it maybe just me but I don't think it's appropriate that you suggest that we will several transfers at the Qb position once a starter is named.

Anyone who plays sports at this level understands that coaches are recruiting players every year to replace you. Not in 4 years, when they earn it. It's called competition. 4 years is a long time, a lot can happen. To pick up and leave after one season is pretty shortsighted. i believe these guys will fight for the job. I don't see them as quitters.

I could definitely see that happening but wouldn't that be the worst case scenario? A QB controversy filled year without a clear starter.

I took Tribal's meaning as "when was the last time we had an injury-free QB before last year?"

Me, too. Which begs the question, will the new O Line be solid in pass protection or will the new QB have to run for his life...increasing the chances of a second QB this season? (we've certainly seen THAT movie before...).

Correct. And, if anyone thinks an inexperienced QB is going to play a full season, you're nuts.

Look at what happened to Villanova, JMU, and Richmond in the past few seasons. Opportunity inevitably comes.

Jimmye will pick a full-time starter for certain; he will not go with a 2-man qb situation.

RE: Early QB Rumors/Rumbling - Rocco - 04-04-2017 06:36 AM

Well that seals it- get ready for rotating QBs.

RE: Early QB Rumors/Rumbling - Tribe32 - 04-04-2017 09:19 AM

Assuming we don't get a rain out, we'll be able to see for ourselves how it all looks at the Spring Game. Then at least speculation might be based on something other than in interview with Devonte Dedmon and nothing more.

RE: Early QB Rumors/Rumbling - TribePride52 - 04-04-2017 09:53 AM

Shon obviously had intentions of being the starting QB. That's why he enrolled early. I believe it's a 2-3 QB race. But personall, I want it to be Shon.
