Historically, State doesn't give coaches much more than 5 years, so he better hope they do.

The last eight coaches:

Coach Seasons
Everett Case. 17
Press Maravich 2
Norm Sloan. 14
Jim Valvano 10
Les Robinson 7
Herb Sendek 11
Sydney Lowe. 4
Mark Gottfried. 6

The last 20 years only Herb got significantly more than 5, and he got ran off after having a pretty good amount of success.

For the record.....AND to stick with the theme of busting your balls, Herb Sendek left NC State on his own free will and accord to accept the Arizona State job. History tells us that he wasn't able to live up to the Sun Devils expectations either, and he was subsequently fired after 8-9 seasons there.

Gonna have to disagree there. He wasn't exactly getting favorable treatment and was pushed out. Sometimes you don't have to be fired to realize you're not wanted. State fans didn't like him. Their mentality was "Sure, you get us to the tourney and we're good but you can't beat UNC and Duke. You gotta go." After that, they turned to a coach that was a player during their glory years in efforts to restoke that ability to compete for a national championship. It didn't work out. Turned into a ginormous mess, and here we are. Point of the story, is that Sendek was a good coach that just caught a raw deal from delusional NC State.

But hey... let's not let all this distract us from a big time rivalry matchup for us tomorrow night vs ezu. Speaking of delusional. I sent my pirate loving brother a not so loving text earlier.

I get it....you despise NC State...Not sure if that was prior to them hiring coach Keatts or after. You got the Everybody in Raleigh wanted Sendek gone mantra from the local media outlets at the time that were predominantly UNC grads, and that LOVED stoking the fire with the Pack fanbase....Yes, there were some that weren't happy with Sendek, but the FACT remains that he left and was not "run out of town"

I actually don't despise NC State at all, in fact, they are like the Cubs were to me before the won the WS, i'd root for them just because. I'd still much rather State win than UNC(who i despise) and Duke. If you truly believe Sendek wasn't run out of town, I have some oceanfront land in South Dakota for sale. I watched many state fans kick and scream about him while he was there, on top of the media. He got tired of the heat, so he got out of the kitchen. If you coach at State and you don't beat UNC and Duke or win a conf title, it won't be enough. THAT, is a fact

Even my neighbor at work who is a die-hard State guy and grad laughed at the thought Herb wasn't ran out of town.

No coach in his right mind would willingly leave a decent ACC program for Arizona State. Prior to Sendek arriving in 2006, the school hadn't had a 20+ win season since 1995, and had only made the NCAA Tournament once in that span. Sendek turned in five 20-win seasons and two NCAA Tournament bids in his tenure at ASU, with three of those 20-win seasons being powered by his prized recruit, James Harden.

Bobby Hurley is the guy in place there now and is of course a big name, but his previous stop was Buffalo; he's moving up the chain whereas Sendek had already gotten to a "destination" in NC State.

Hell, few coaches ever leave a program on their own volition unless there's something better out there for them. In situations where a lateral or downgrade move is made, there's always something else going on in the background. Uprooting your family and quitting a job where you make decent money requires that. Poor relationship with the AD, lack of support and resources, etc.

Well, not sure how long you've been around but when it happens in your own program you get a decent idea of what it looks like.

RE: Keatts to NC State - solohawks - 11-29-2017 10:59 AM

In my opinion,

Sendeck took a lesser job because he was trying to be proactive. He felt he was on shaky ground. He took an opportunity at AZ St. while he had a chance because if he had gotten fired from NC State, that opportunity, or a similar one, might not have been there.

The UNCW administration at the time did everything humanly possible to make Brownell know he was not wanted. From the way they handled his contract negotiations to the low ball offer in terms of money and years he got, it was made apparent to him that he was not wanted and one bad season could be the end of him. So, he left, and rightfully so. The Star News did a tremendous job at documenting all of this and their articles are still available if one is interested in history.

As far as your own program do you mean UNCW? Or NC State? I'm sorry but I didn't understand what you were trying to say in that post. I've been around long enough to have gray hair (at least whats left of it lol) and all of that time has been spent here in the Port City.

Pretty sure CG is talking about the Brownell situation

RE: Keatts to NC State - jumpinmullet - 11-29-2017 06:07 PM

NO doubt Sendek felt the heat and was lucky enough to find another job before he got fired. I don't blame State fans for running him off, nobody wants to watch the Princeton offense with players who actually could play uptempo.
I think Keatts will turn it around and win games but who knows if he can get lucky enough to land talent good enough to beat UNC and Duke and that will be the measuring stick at NCSU- like it or not. He also could fall victim to the Adidas scandal at any minute and nobody would be surprised at all. I like State but I think they hired a snake in the grass.

RE: Keatts to NC State - 82hawk - 11-29-2017 06:59 PM

Louisville was doing whatever they were doing long before the arrival of Keatts. He may have known what was going on, but I doubt he participated. I also do not see him being a "whistleblower" and ending his career by taking on Pitino. So, he used Louisville as a stepping stone just as he did UNCW. Nothing wrong with that. I had a chance to get to know Kevin pretty well, and he is not a snake in the grass at all.

I would "tell you what I think" but Im sure Id be banned.Coach Keatts is the furthest thing from a snake in the grass and its embarrassing that one of our fans would now say that about a man that did so much for our program.

Tell me what you want-I could care less and we all have opinions. I doubt you know the man at all but I could be wrong. I could also be wrong about him but I doubt it.

If he knew what was going on said nothing, guilty. He is as bad or worse if that is the case. I have know lots of people over the years that have surprised me with things that happen-its called life.

Okay Gray. Since you're still new around here I'm going to go easy here. However, this information is a must: Mullet is not a UNCW fan. He's here because he lives in Wilmington. He's the "anti" voice to everything we hold dear and sacred as Seahawk fans. Sometimes, he posts things we agree with, but most of the time that's not the case. So please, don't confuse him with a UNCW grad, fan, or anything of the like. Stick around long enough and you'll get used to it.

True I did not attend UNCW by the Kmart but I have been a longtime supporter of UNCW basketball . If I was sentenced to live in Greenville,NC -I would NOT support Pirate sports in any capacity! Woo !!

one move he made after leaving would state otherwise! You guys might be right he may not have been involved, and it appears the investigations thus far have confirmed that. However, he certainly knew it was going on and there is a certain level of guilt by association for sure.

RE: Keatts to NC State - SEA33HAWK - 11-30-2017 10:23 AM

Can you guys show me the evidence that he "certainly" knew? It proof ever surfaces that he was involved in any way, I will jump right in on the bashing. But I refuse to publicly trash someone on just speculation. You guys could be right on with the accusations. But if you're not, you will have contributed to placing a scar on his name that will never go away. And how would you like that to happen to you and your family. I personally like to believe, as a fan base, we're better than that.
Keatts did something no one could do for 10+ years. And that's turn this program back around. And cleanly do it as far as I can see. And, for that, I am grateful.
