RE: 2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting - bubbadog57 - 06-11-2019 05:23 AM

Of course the proof of the pudding for our remarkable flurry of apparently solid freshmen and graduate transfers is what shows up on the court this coming season and not who looks great in videos.

However, at this point it appears apparent that somehow Coach Fischer and his hustling staff have put together a talented group of recruits in record time, as well as the return of Knight, that may change the grim outlook of just six weeks or so ago into a competitive aggregation in the CAA next season. I know for sure that the group of us in the neighborhood who attend the games are cautiously optimistic and feel very good about Coach Fischer and his staff.

I also hear that the staff continues its pursuit of one more big man for the 2019-20 team.

You appear to have omitted the graduate transfers to W&M from Wisconsin Milwaukee and Pennsylvania
announced during this same period.

Not to speak for 08, Hamilton & Barnes are grad transfers - not 2019 high school signings. There is a separate thread for them.

My Spanish is rusty, but I believe Miguel Ayesa was selected for the U22 Spanish National Team.

You are correct. Congrats, Miguel!

So, a Belgian, a Spaniard, and now a Latvian. Great having some international flavor.

Welcome to the Tribe family, Rainers!

It is great to recruit International players; but to the best of my knowledge all previous International players at W&M had established academic records at American schools and prep schools. It will be interesting to see how the W&M Admissions process plays out with student/athletes who have no USA academic records to assess.

Rainiers H is the only one with no US academic record. Van Vliet is a current student and Ayesa went to high school in Florida.

Admissions should have plenty of experience - with our tennis teams over the years.

Not to mention the men and women's soccer teams and the field hockey team...more than a few foreign student-athletes with no US academic records
on those Tribe squads.

RE: 2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting - Tribe32 - 06-24-2019 01:41 PM

There are no players on either men's or women's soccer teams from outside of the country in terms of high school or prep school. I'm sure there have been in the past.

Part of me does wonder if some admissions policy has changed, football seems to be going after international players too, not something I remember us doing in the past.

More likely recruiting dollars.

Based on my experience (granted a small sample size), I feel that Euro students are better educated than current Americans at the time of HS graduation. Not a knock on intelligence, but simply that our educational system is floundering.

School just announced their addition, so I'd say yes.

Are we to assume that this class is done and that last scholarship will be used for a transfer or saved for next year?

With the announcement, I'd assume they are done with freshmen. I guess something unexpected could shake out, but I think their attention is on 2020. I'd think a talented underclass transfer could be a possibility, though I'm unaware of any serious interest.
