Not official yet, but seems like this is going to happen. This should bring GS's enrollment up to close to 30k.

This could explain why the Georgia BoR capped student fees in terms of percent subsidy...can't let Southern and State get too much money for athletics from their new acquisitions.

Hope this helps us increase our branding in Savannah. Always felt that's a great market for causal fans only being an hour away.

I figure we'll move our nursing program to Savannah since the students do clinicals in Savannah anyways. Hoping this helps grow our enrollment and endowment significantly

I don't understand (and we don't have the full details) why this consolidation does not include East Georgia as well? That seems like a no brainer to me.

so over the Southern administration's head? I don't think its likely to hurt y'all, I think it gives you a bigger presence in your closest decent sized population center.

Since the University System of GA owns the adjacent land around Armstrong it looks like they are planning a campus expansion so that all the students that commute from Savannah to Ga Southern everyday could just go to the Savannah campus instead now. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out considering this is way different than any other campus merger in Georgia. GS and Armstrong are considerably farther away from eachother than GAST and Perimeter or KSU and Southern Poly were. Both those schools were within a couple miles of their merging partners.

ah, I was thinking it would just be made into a branch campus with a pretty limited curriculum a lot of NC schools have at least one or two branches that do that, if I'm not mistaken App has a small branch that works in conjunction with the community college in the nearby city of Hickory

Next we need to merge with Skidaway.

That's already part of UGA's web of influence. I doubt the BOR will take something away from their precious to give it to us.

All public schools in Georgia are governed and owned by one entity. The intent behind the mergers is to cut cost by reducing the administration required. I don't think we know the full extent of the changes but they haven't moved programs around (outside of KSU/SPSU, which is a special case due to distance) as far as I'm aware.

Edit - Sorry I see your question was already addressed.

I know, just wishful thinking. I was told that is the most valuable piece of property in the system. That was probably 6 to 8 years ago, values could have changed.

I agree, I don't think it hurts us in anyway. I was just pointing out that I'm not sure our admin has any control over this but rather the board of regents making the decision.

I'm not so sure about that with the plan to increase enrollment on the Savannah campus to +/- 14,000 (currently Armstrong has about 7,000) and to build a new addition to the Statesboro Campus to accommodate at least an additional 10,000 students it appears to me GS is in a major expansion mode.

RE: Georgia Southern - Armstrong Atlantic State Merger - NCeagle - 01-06-2017 10:44 AM

would be awesome to see Southern have 30k+ undergrad in the next 5-10 years

RE: Georgia Southern - Armstrong Atlantic State Merger - Check Yosef - 01-06-2017 10:57 AM

You guys just had to make plans to expand greatly right after us mountaineers have just about caught up with 20k enrollment eh?

Unfortunately the BOR controls and limits schools like GS and GSU as much as possible. This has nothing to do with enhancing GS and more about saving money, GS was just higher on the food chain than Armstrong. KSU got Southern Poly which was probably the biggest merger as Southern Poly was a great tech school. Several other mergers have happened I can see a few more coming. East GA will likely remain a feeder for GS and not absorbed.

Armstrong awarded doctoral degrees so this is not East Ga or a commuter community college merger by any means. Huge step forward for GS. When the south campus project is completed we realistically could hit 35-40K.

Almost sounds like Georgia Southern would be moving into C-USA demographics.

A lot of us in C-USA would rather have Georgia Southern than Georgia State if given a choice.

RE: Georgia Southern - Armstrong Atlantic State Merger - southcharlotteapp - 01-06-2017 01:09 PM

Could be a trend soon in NC. Last I checked we have 16 four year universities under the UNC system. The state will not be able to properly fund all 16 moving forward. There are some that will be downgraded to a 2 year, and some that will merge. For example WCU and Asheville, or UNCG and NC A&T, due to proximity. There will be some upset alum, but it almost seems inevitable. I think the only ones that are safe are UNC, NCSU, ECU, UNCW, UNCC, and App.
