Drexel Dragons Alumni Thread - J.B. - 11-15-2016 09:23 AM

Thought I'd start a separate thread to honor and acknowledge some of our former Dragons.

I'm sure by now, everybody knows about Bashir Mason and Wagner's huge 67-58 upset over #18 UCONN.

Also, last night, Bill Herion and New Hampshire visited Temple and UNH pulled out a 57-52 win. It was the first time that Herrion coached a game in Philadelphia since leaving Drexel 18 years ago.

Bashir has been doing a good job up there for sure. Though UConn then did fall to Northeastern, which helps our conference out too.

Damion has landed on the Celtics D-League team, the Maine Red Claws. They've played 3 games. He's averaging 14 pts, 6 reb in 35 minutes per game. Shooting 43% from 3.

They don't play locally against the Delaware 87ers until Jan 4. FYI: 87ers home court is the Carpenter Center.

That win for him appears to be the anomaly so far this season for UNH. After winning at Temple they lost at home to Abilene Christian (who finished last year at 13-18 and 8-10 out of the southland) and just went to West Virginia and got handled by a score of 100-41

I love watching CBB this time of year to watch teams like UNH and Wagner bring down conferences like the AAC. Then I want to break the TV in March when the selection committee makes excuses in favor of conferences like the AAC and still gives them 3-5 bids while great mid-major teams continue to get screwed.

I know it's early but the AAC is now ranked 16th in RPI, while the CAA is ranked 6th, behind 5 of the Power 6 and above the Big 12. Of course the CAA is 17-17 right now, and the Big 12 is 28-2....but STILL. I guess it's because the CAA has played a lot of road games against tough opponents, while the Big 12 loaded up their early schedule by buying home games against cupcakes. But the selection committee won't care in March.

Damion Lee is killing it with the Maine Red Claws. Stat lines are really good. Would love to see one of their games, but the D-League gets less TV time than the CAA.

Are you local? They're playing the 87ers in early January.

Former Dragon Jim Rullo got some media time on KYW as his Neumann team is ranked in the top 25 in Division III.

How about a former Dragon still in the college ranks, Khris Lane putting up some good numbers down at Longwood.

Amazing what some kids can do when given a chance. Not sure which place is better right now us or Longwood. Good for him though getting a chance and playing well.

RE: Former Dragons Thread - bdragon - 12-28-2016 09:08 AM

Maybe it hits home for me more because I watched these guys play, but I think its awesome to see Spiker bringing in graduates to talk to the team. First one I saw was Jim Rullo in early December, most recently its Michael Thompson today to give some Palestra history and advice. I'm pretty sure there were some younger guys that came in too... Love it, keep those connections to the history of the program.

Damion is out for the year with an ACL tear. His season ends with a line of 17.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Wow! Damion's Bruiser Flint bad luck has continued to haunt him every year since graduating from Drexel.

RE: Former Dragons Thread - Water Boy - 01-18-2017 10:50 AM

Article on Damion's recovery effort
http://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/college/louisville/2017/01/17/former-louisville-basketball-star-damion-lee-wont-let-injury-rattle-him/96664002/

Speaking of ex-Dragons that transferred to a southern school starting with L, Khris Lane has been playing at a high level for Longwood. He has averaged over 20 ppg in conference play including a couple of thirty point games. His 16.2 average for the season beats Damion's 16.1 for Louisville last year. Longwood/Louisville Big South/ACC pretty much the same right?

All kidding aside, it is nice to see him doing well after playing sparingly his first year here, his main contribution having been firing up the pregame huddle.

RE: Former Dragons Thread - bdragon - 01-19-2017 10:09 AM

Forgot to mention, saw Chuck Guittar at the Delaware game. The young guys aren't going to remember Chuck, but he was a solid part of the 1996 team that beat Memphis in the tourney. He transferred in and played two years for Herrion. I believe he's a high school coach in NJ.

RE: Former Dragons Thread - Water Boy - 02-04-2017 11:02 AM

This is more a story of a former opponent, but one a bit out of the ordinary.

As you might know, I live in rural Montana so most people around me have never heard of Drexel. I was talking to someone about their well and he asked me where I learned about hydrology. When I told him I studied at Drexel, he immediately says - "Oh I know them, they were our big rivals" Turns out he played football for Lebanon Valley College. I'm pretty sure that is the first time I have ever had someone know about us because of football.

RE: Former Dragons Thread - J.B. - 02-09-2017 10:08 PM

I'm watching Bill Herrion and New Hampshire as they try to pull off the upset against undefeated Vermont on ESPNU. I'm still struggling with seeing Herrion as such an old man. I think he was the youngest coach in college basketball when Drexel hired him.

For those not suffering from PTSD, an article on Bruiser and what he's been up to.
