RE: Pro Dukes - HyperDuke - 05-30-2019 09:16 AM

Thanks, not a fan so really had no idea who it was.

RE: Pro Dukes - ParentofJMUMRDs - 05-30-2019 01:55 PM

Was listening to WTEM Sports Talk 980 this morning going to and from work. JFM was getting some serious love from the radio hosts (Al Galdi and Doc Walker) along with Redskins people they had on their shows. Glad he is doing well and opening eyes.

I think you are right. I could not think of a current FCS player on the roster so I went old school JMU.

Yep heard that this morning too, as well as a ton of coverage in print and media in the DC area. Excited for once to see the Redskins pre-season games. Hoping he can be a regular nickel or dime player. Once the pads come on we'll get a better idea....

This whole thing shows to me how much the NFL values measurables over quality. It's exactly why and how NE Pats every year get such great value players in later rounds and lead the league in starters who were drafted in rounds 4-7. It's how they let go great players before they blow up their roster to keep a star. I am sort of amazed other coaches/GMs can't see it or figure it out.

Then again, you have a lot of room for error with Tom Brady at the helm...

And you can pay to get yourself out of trouble when your picks don't pan out because TB is being paid well below his market value.

And that's b/c Tom Brady gets it is a team game and about winning titles. He is willing to take less (still paid very well) and restructure his contract so NE can go out and get him weapons, OL, defensive players.

I am no NE fan but their players get that the NFL is a business (especially Tom Brady).

Plus his wife is worth a half billion dollars, and he has a bunch of sponsorship deals, for which, I assume, he is very well compensated. All that is to say his salary is probably his walkabout money.

I remember hearing a story about Shaq and how he never cashed a paycheck while he played; he would deposit it in a separate account and lived solely off his endorsements. Don't know if that is true, but if it is, holy cash cow, Batman!

RE: Pro Dukes - DoubleDogDare - 06-04-2019 09:48 AM

It is kind of funny how it works. TB12 takes a lower salary as his valuable endorsements can supplement his contract. His endorsements are valuable because he is a QB and on a popular/great team. His lower salary allows NE to pay other positions higher. Those better contracts bring better talent. Better talent leads to better results. Better results lead to more endorsements for TB12.

Obviously, there is more than just that but for his position/market/face/etc, it makes a lot of sense to sacrifice some of his contract value.

Bingo, Tom Brady particularly and the NE Patriots as an organization (love'em or hate'em) get it much better than other NFL organizations that football is a business and being successful opens up a lot more revenue opportunities for everyone than just simply being the highest paid at your position. Sure they should all make whatever money they can but the 'stars' should never be hurting, they will always have good to great contract offers......now those guys that are making league minimum for <5 years is a different story (but then again they are making league min so they don't have the same options available --- talent and value lead to greater options)

RE: Pro Dukes - Sir Duke - 06-04-2019 06:48 PM

JMU pitcher Nick Robertson was drafted in the 7th round by the Dodgers today. While he's not technically a Pro Duke unless and until he signs a contract, I'm putting it here anyway.

Good catch and thanks for updating. His slot money is $195.7K. An added plus is the Dodgers organization historically has been very good in developing pitchers through their system. Good luck to Nick. He deserves it.

My stepson works for the Mets. They can use a little JMU magic.
