I don't know what to think- I hope I see JMU as #2 in the top 80 nationally on the heels of their ratings last year but I think graduating Curry they may be 6th in this particular poll. Gustys is a beast inside and JMU may be the only team in the conference that has the bigs/fouls to throw at him.

They do also pick up a transfer from Cincy that was fairly highly regarded coming out of high school. Believe his last name is Morman. So they will be a tough team with the two new additions, Moto and Morsell.

97, it's too early for hoops! We can worry about this in mid November, although we'll have our answer fairly soon.04-cheers

84 it's never too early to think about hoops.

Well that's that. Towson ranked #2, JMU not even in top 144. Let's hope the season goes better than that.

Come on though does anyone really think JMU is worse then Howard, Cal ST Northridge, Pepperdine, Marshall, Northwestern State? Sorry I am not buying it. Unless something goes completely wrong we are better then all those teams.

I saw that today on Towson...read the write-up for that and it's awfully tough to understand how this team is rated that highly. Makes no sense.

The only reason they had a good record last season is because their non-conference SOS was 350. Literally the second weakest schedule in division 1.

RE: MBB Schedule 2016/17 - NJDuke97 - 08-30-2016 09:43 PM

Yep- you could smell that bs coming a mile away. Towson and Skerry have always been overrated and they've managed to get another media guy/outlet to fall for their hype. Last year- 1st round loss to Northeastern and 1st round loss in the Vegas 8 and they are top 75 going into this season?

BTW the Moto guy everyone goes nuts about- I think Dalembert can have a similar impact on CAA games (I think if you look at the CAA conference stats he probably did) and neither is as dominant on the glass or inside as Gustys. Towson still can't shoot and they don't have much depth. Their one big recruit (Matthews) is coming off knee surgery so I wouldn't expect him to contribute this season. Even the Cincy transfer- Snowden proved more in his first two years than he did and I would expect Ramone to make more of an impact on the floor as a Junior.

The Dukes are better than Towson and I think it will play out that way this season.

Richmond ODU and UNCW will be the best teams on JMU's schedule this year not Towson.

I was reading Athlon in the Supermarket and they had JMU as 6th in the CAA as well. The one startling comment from the article that you posted- they said Shaq Brown was JMU's best defender- find that one hard to believe.

RE: Future MBB Schedule (currently 2016/17) - Wear Purple - 10-06-2016 07:37 AM

This blog kind of reinforces a bit of what we already know. That is, the CAA's relationship with Comcast/NBCSN is dead and the CAA is attempting to build a relationship with ESPN.

A read about potential TV coverage (on ESPN-U?) of the CAA MBB tournament... http://mattsarzsports.blogspot.com/2016/10/is-espn-carving-out-space-for-caa-mens.html?_sm_au_=i4VsFMstrq2kDPr2

I hope so. Hoops junkies tune into the ESPN collection of networks during conference tournament week and ESPN promotes it.

Schedule note, the CAA MBB Media Days event is coming up on Tuesday, Oct. 25. We should learn the TV designations for some of the Dukes' conference games then.

RE: Future MBB Schedule (currently 2016/17) - NJDuke97 - 10-23-2016 09:15 PM

Kenpom 2017 rankings listed for opponents below. JMU is ranked as 109 Kenpom. A couple of takeaways- JMU actually scores relatively well on the advanced efficiency metrics going into the season- just outside the top 100. Relative to our OOC opponents we would be expected to win every game except vs. Richmond at home. The CAA scores pretty well as a conference- JMU is 5th and I tend to agree that the 4 in front of us are the best in the conference although I'm not sold on COC at 77. Hofstra and W&M will continue to be tough teams and UNCW is the favorite. The other takeaway- some of the teams on our OOC schedule score very poorly. @ Montana State, home vs. TX Southern, @ Longwood, @ App State- no way JMU can lose these games. Even the games at Mason and @ Charlotte JMU has to win.

I don't think the metrics tell the whole story here- i.e. Dalembert- uneven season last year off early knee problems. I think he takes a big step forward this year. Also Shaq Brown- somewhat constrained under Brady's system and very inconsistent- I think he finds more of a rhythm in the new system with better conditioning and has a big year.

At this point KP thinks JMU has a less than 50% chance to win the following games:
@ ODU (40%)
@ Mason (49%)
@ W Michigan (44%)

@ Hofstra (37%)
@ W&M (33%)
@ CofC (29%)
@ Elon (43%)
@ UNCW (27%)
@ Towson (46%)

He is projecting 19-12 (10-8)

RE: Future MBB Schedule (currently 2016/17) - Wear Purple - 10-25-2016 08:10 AM

CAA announced MBB TV schedule (from today's Media Day event): http://caasports.com/news/2016/10/24/MBB_1024164132.aspx

Listings (includes WBB): http://sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/caasports.com/documents/2016/10/25/CAATVRelease_AllinOne.pdf?id=3169

Important notes from the release (linked above)...
"As of press time, CAA teams will be featured in 75 televised games thanks in large part to the conference’s agreements with the NBC Sports Regional Networks and the American Sports Network. Additional games will be added to the television schedule prior to the start of the regular season. CAA fans will also be provided with internet broadcasts of hundreds of additional games through CAA.TV, the conference’s digital network. CAA.TV will provide coverage of any non-televised conference games."

Also...
"In the near future, the conference expects to announce an agreement with a major sports network to carry the title game of the CAA Men’s Basketball championship to a national audience.
In addition, CAA teams will make appearances on the ESPN family of networks, and other contests will be televised by FS1, CBS Sports Network, the SEC Network, the Big Ten Network, and the ACC Regional Network."

IOW, more to come...

Elon at #2 for worst OOC opponents
http://kenpom.com/blog/the-worst-non-conference-games-this-season/

2. December 28: Central Penn at Elon

Central Penn dipped its toe in the D-I waters in November of 2010, losing 151-92 to VMI. Perhaps it was the excitement of the 110-possession game, but that contest sparked an insatiable lust within the Knights’ basketball program for further D-I action. They played three games each in the 2012 and 2013 seasons, four games in 2014, five in 2015 and six last season. They lost all of those games, of course, only twice coming closer than 23 points. Mostly, they play some of the worst teams in D-I, but then there’s this game with Elon who should be able to handle themselves in a strong CAA this season.

This game is the final non-conference game for the Phoenix and comes right after playing Duke, so I suppose some confidence-building will be in order. If you want to see some players on one team have their confidence strengthened and some players on the other team have their confidence shattered, then by all means, head out to Alumni Gym at Elon on December 28th. But only if you are an essential part of the competing teams or the game operations staff.
