All G5 Global Academic Rankings (Summer Boredom Edition) - itsmeagain - 07-12-2016 02:52 PM

The Center for World University Rankings has released their list of the top 1000 universities in the world (http://cwur.org/2016.php). In my boredom, i've gone ahead and created a spreadsheet showing where each G5 school ranks, including the conference they belong to.

They only rank Doctorate awarding schools, correct?

No, not officially at least. But, according to the Methodology , publications account up to 20% of the grade. But undoubtedly, being a research university will shoot up the score of a university.

What's the criterion or the methodology used in measuring "influence," "Broad impact," or "quality of faculty?"

This is the total methodology, and will show you exactly how everything was calculated.

I guess the better term would be research universities. Basically, if you're a university focused on undergraduate education, you have no chance in a list like this.

TXST is a doctorate granting research university. UTA has been one for a longer or similar time frame than/as UTSA but didn't make it. They're a Carnegie R1 for cripes sake.

Absolutely. They can still have research output, but it will likely not be of the level/quality of schools with a large graduate division. Whether that affects the quality of the university is debatable, but that's why this is just a bit of fun.

You guys are definitely too good for it. We can ignore those other school rankings where you guys are middle of the pack in conference.

Im definitely not gonna say we're too good for the Sun Belt, but I don't think there are any realistic rankings that put us middle of the pack

Forbes, and US News are the other two big ones.

Probably the wrong phrase there. I meant more in a "right in the thick of things" perspective, whereas you stand out above most of the others in this list.

USNWR is the big one. Nobody looks at Forbes unless their school is highly ranked., People look at UNWR and Carnegie in the United State and WUR overseas. I didnt post this thread but sure I'll play along. We are RNP because we had 26K (now 46k) undergrads and we are a downtown university with a lot part time working students. We have 37 ranked programs in USNWR and are one of the highest ranked Global Universities. There are no other SBC ranked universities in that category other than the two football members we just voted out and UTA. You see the WUR ranking. And we are in the highest Carnegie category. That's good enough and quite enough indicators for me.

Were second in conference according to Forbes and, while it doesn't publish national rankings in USN, we're second behind UT Arlington on their global list. As I said, I don't think we're middle of the pack by any academic ranking in the Sun Belt

Lest we forget, Georgia State is simply without peer in the Sunbelt. The addition of National Champion Coastal Carolina was the last straw. The oracle of all things Panther says so. http://georgiastate.247sports.com/Article/Georgia-State-Football-Time-For-GSU-To-Move-On-44023203

I was told to thank you for the clicks.

RE: All G5 Global Academic Rankings (Summer Boredom Edition) - Pounce FTW - 07-12-2016 05:22 PM

Wow...maybe everyone should get a trophy in these rankings so people don't get snippy about it.

What GSU does well is important enough to these rankings that we got a decent spot. What some other SBC schools do well was not important enough to these rankings to put them on the list. If they want to do different things well, I'm sure it's being addressed within the school. If they don't, good for them.

There...that was easy...!

RE: All G5 Global Academic Rankings (Summer Boredom Edition) - JCGSU - 07-12-2016 06:25 PM

Academics has zero impact or relevance to any sport and obviously attendance and support for athletics. As with a lot of schools the postgraduate students are a small part of the student base, often graduates of a different school and or are not heavily involved in athletics. Undergraduates are the bread and butter of athletic support. There is little difference in UGA, GSU and GS in initial and mid career salary especially GS and GSU. I can only guess, since we have only been a university since 1992, the insignificant gap that is there will only get narrower as we continue to grow. Only GT runs with the big dogs when is comes to pay in this state.

GSU's location facilitated the need in a booming city for all the transplants to get masters and doctorates, good for them. How that makes them "not fit" (by some not all of course) when their quality of undergrad population is sub par to others in this conference is beyond me.
