Most of the Cubs current talent was either drafted or traded for prior to their stardom. So no, it's not the same as say the Yankees "stealing" Stanton from Jeter's Marlins -- COLLUUUUUUUUSION!!!!!!! 03-nutkick

LOL They can have Stanton back. His the new ERA AROD. Terrible in the clutch. If it was really collusion they would have given us Yellich instead, he's the better player! The Yankees Core is homegrown Talent, Judge, Sanchez, Sevy, Torres(he counts), Bird, Voit, Gardner, Sevy, Betances. Huge part of their team. All i'm saying is when your team is second in the league in payroll, you live in a glass house so be careful throwing stones.

haha. Oooooookay. Fine. Truce.

To be fair, the Cubs have been catastrophically stanking it up so far. An abysmal 1-3 and getting blown out. Pitching is going to be a problem again this year. Since the WS championship in 2016, it seems Epstein and Hoyer are content to get by with nothing more than a "slightly" above average starting rotation (if they're even that good, I'm being generous)... I'm just not sold that the staff we currently have are going to get it done again. Last year they eeked out a playoff spot. The Brewers aren't messing around and the Cardinals are always a threat in Sept.

I did the same with the Cubs last night when the bullpen blew ANOTHER lead to a less than impressive Braves team.

Theo Epstein's history in Boston would earn him a lot of flexibility; the fact that he helped bring a Championship to Chicago really protects him, but what he's done (or failed to do) in our pen the past two years is really hard to explain. 1-5 with three leads blown by the pen and heading to Milwaukee for three before we make our Wrigley debut. Joe is going to be the fall guy, but the front office has set him up to fail this year.

Completely agree.

I just don't understand how they explain not making any significant moves in either the pen or starting rotation?

Personally, I agree that this isn't all on Joe Maddon, but it's definitely ALREADY time to hit the panic button here if you're the Cubs organization. They had better find a way to get the bullpen operable. As of right now, there's no trust to turn the ball over to them with ANY lead, let alone a close game and like you said we haven't even played a home game yet.

The biggest problem I have with all of this is the talent we currently have on our roster and wasting it. These last couple years should have been dynasty building for the Cubs. Instead, it was one great year followed by some "settling" for being happy the championship finally happened and now back to looking like garbage... except with a monster roster.

This is all on the front office and our pitching staff.

Contenders can always acquire relievers from non-contenders. I imagine that's what Theo will plan to do.

Guys like Raisel Iglesias (CIN), Felipe Vazquez (PIT), Keone Kela (PIT), Mychal Givens (BAL), Alex Colome (CHW), Kelvin Herrera (CHW), Cody Allen (LAA), Wade Davis (COL), Segio Romo (MIA), Drew Steckenrider (MIA), Ken Giles (TOR) and Will Smith (SF) could be among the pool of guys available closer to the trade deadline.

Yeah... except he's in a pinch right now to be in the "contender" category.

Keep going at this rate and some of our players are likely to get poached by actual contenders.

It's April 5th. lol.

RE: 2016-2019 MLB Thread - bricksnivy - 04-05-2019 11:21 AM

Pitching as a whole is a concern. Theo's been in charge for 8 years and we have drafted and developed a major-league starting pitcher. He made some brilliant moves to create a really solid staff by signing Lester, and trading for Arrieta and Hendricks. Cole Hammels was a good addition last year and I believe picking up his option was the right move this year. It's still a bit surprising that they weren't in on Verlander, and choosing Darvish over Arrieta hasn't worked out (I haven't written off Darvish). Honestly, I'm okay with the starting rotation even with the disappointment the first week. The situation is the pen is what really upsets me, it's indefensible. Right now, there is no one you can call on with confidence. Ultimately, I think having $55 million tied up this season in Heyward, Chatwood and Darvish crippled us....which means I'm assuming payroll was an issue more than their ability to see an obvious weakness.

We have one more year before rookie/team friendly contracts expire and stars start looking to get generational money. Obviously Bryant is a priority, Rizzo is the team leader (and unofficial captain), Baez is not a superstar but pretty close, and we need Contreras. Difficult decisions to be made and we're going to have to pay for pitching since we can draft and develop. Thankful for 2016; the window isn't closed, but it's closing fast in a really tough division.

I know, and I hear myself. I know it's too early to really be panicking, but it was an awful winter for the Cubs, baseball related and unrelated. A really poor start on top of the built up angst is causing an over reaction, but I can't talk myself out of it.

Yeah. I can't talk myself out of it either.

I know it's 1-5 on April 5th, but we're in the NL Central. Not exactly the easiest division in baseball. Compound that with the fact the last couple years the Cubs poor starts and had to fight back into contention and rely on other clubs to collapse a bit isn't helpful, considering how strong the Brewers are now and just the inevitability that the Cards will always be a gnat.

RE: 2016-2019 MLB Thread - Seahawkhoops - 04-22-2019 09:45 AM

Been a very wonky year thus far. If you move Tulo to 2B the yankees can feild an entire team, a very good one with guys on the DL, including SP and RP.
